Download or read book Girl Woman Other written by Bernardine Evaristo and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE BOOKER PRIZE “A must-read about modern Britain and womanhood . . . An impressive, fierce novel about the lives of black British families, their struggles, pains, laughter, longings and loves . . . Her style is passionate, razor-sharp, brimming with energy and humor. There is never a single moment of dullness in this book and the pace does not allow you to turn away from its momentum.” —Booker Prize Judges Bernardine Evaristo is the winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and the first black woman to receive this highest literary honor in the English language. Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of Black British women that paints a vivid portrait of the state of contemporary Britain and looks back to the legacy of Britain’s colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean. The twelve central characters of this multi-voiced novel lead vastly different lives: Amma is a newly acclaimed playwright whose work often explores her Black lesbian identity; her old friend Shirley is a teacher, jaded after decades of work in London’s funding-deprived schools; Carole, one of Shirley’s former students, is a successful investment banker; Carole’s mother Bummi works as a cleaner and worries about her daughter’s lack of rootedness despite her obvious achievements. From a nonbinary social media influencer to a 93-year-old woman living on a farm in Northern England, these unforgettable characters also intersect in shared aspects of their identities, from age to race to sexuality to class. Sparklingly witty and filled with emotion, centering voices we often see othered, and written in an innovative fast-moving form that borrows technique from poetry, Girl, Woman, Other is a polyphonic and richly textured social novel that shows a side of Britain we rarely see, one that reminds us of all that connects us to our neighbors, even in times when we are encouraged to be split apart.

Download or read book The Quijos Chiefdoms written by Andrea M. Cuéllar and published by Center for Comparative Arch. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological study of the emergence of the ethnohistorically documented Quijos chiefdoms in the eastern Ecuadorian Andes. This research evaluates links between the emergence of centralized leadership and the organization of agricultural production. The focus is on reconstructing the demographic history of 137 km2 based on a full coverage systematic survey, and on reconstructing patterns of food production and consumption based on analysis of pollen, phytoliths and plant macroremains from the excavation of 31 tests at locations representing different environmental settings and settlement types. The study proposes a sequence starting at about 600 B.C., with the first manifestations of a regional system of centralized authority appearing after about 500 A.D. Neither control of basic resources nor specialized craft production seem to have been important in the social and political dynamics of the emerging Quijos chiefdoms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would it feel like to actually travel back in time? How meaningful or dangerous could it be to embark on such a voyage? Where on earth might a suitable candidate and launch site be found? And when would be the chosen era for a journey to the past? Divorcee David, an early-retired journalist residing in the university city of Cambridge, can and will answer these intriguing questions as he is offered a unique and mind-blowing opportunity to travel back in time to medieval Cambridge - despite having to satisfy a requisite pre-condition that is, literally, quite alien to him. His journey will take him on a transit across the centuries; including encounters with two special women. David invites you to accompany him on this incredible, unpredictable and perilous exploit in what was, to him, a virtually real world. For some of those involved, the story would end tragically; for others, life and happiness will prevail. But who is destined for which ending...? Readers of time travel fiction will delight in this first person account that plays with the laws of physics and engages with the history of its characters. Take a seat in a time travel venture that will grip you until the surprising final pages. Praise for Mark Harris’ other works: “Mark Harris’ style makes for easy reading and comprehension. He paints the background to each story with a delicate, gentle, and at times humorous touch.” - D J Coppel, BJR “I enjoyed this book more than I could ever have thought possible.” - Reggie Ross, Belfast Jewish Recorder
