Book The Representation of REFUGEES and MIGRANTS in European National Media Discourses from 2015 to 2017

Download or read book The Representation of REFUGEES and MIGRANTS in European National Media Discourses from 2015 to 2017 written by Annamária Fábián and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the refugee crisis was discussed in many countries e.g. in Greece, Hungary, Italy and Spain long before 2015, it began to receive cross- European press coverage only after Angela Merkel’s statement ‘Wir schaffen das!’ on the August 30th 2015 This data-based study focuses on, how journalists report on and leading politicians make statements about refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in media and frame these humans after Angela Merkels’ sentence in 2015 until the end of 2017. This volume uses mainly Corpus Linguistics but also Communicative Science for the analysis of labelling strategies and the usage of words, collocations and grammar systems used by journalists and politicians in different European countries in comparison. This empirical volume pictures language specific variation and change of labels. To enable a contrastive study between the press discourses of many European countries, every chapter analyses the data consisting of newspaper articles describing the discourse of a particular country, including discourses of some transit countries around the borders of the Schengen Area of the European Union, which barely have been covered in other studies.

Book excerpt: "What happens to a people ... when it becomes divided and separated through a great overseas migration? ... how do the two parts of such a divided people relate to each other? What ideas do they have regarding each other as the process continues and as time and circumstance cause them to develop in separate ways of their own? The purpose of this book is to seek answers to such questions in the case of the Swedes during the period of their great migration, between roughly 1840 and 1940." -- Pref.

  • Author : Inger Larsson

Book excerpt: The Dala Law is known through only one remaining medieval manuscript, written c.1335 – 1353, and shows strong influence from older Swedish provincial law. It is one of the oldest known texts revealing details of life and conditions in medieval Dalar during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Contradicting older assumptions that this might have been an older law of Västmanland, the Dala Law is well adapted to prevailing conditions in medieval Dalarna Dalar. In contrast to most provincial laws where the lawman had a central position, in the Dala Law it is the written word, the law-book, that is addressed and appealed to. Although the text is comparatively short, this English translation is an important tool for facilitating the internationalisation of Swedish research and making Nordic material more accessible for international scholars. Aided by maps which show medieval Dalarna, Västmanland, and the value of the mining industry in the area, this text provides crucial insight into the history, life, and culture of medieval Dalar which has never been seen before in the English language. With an Introduction that places medieval Darlarna Dalar in its geographical, judicial and ecclesiastical contexts, The Dala Law is an essential resource for all students and scholars interested in medieval Swedish history and law.

Book Quantitative Approaches to Medieval Swedish Law

Download or read book Quantitative Approaches to Medieval Swedish Law written by Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a novel framework for studying historical legalisation using quantitative methods, with 10 fully-preserved laws from medieval Sweden, written between c. 1225 and 1350, serving as a case study. By applying a systematic classification scheme to each legal provision, it is possible to investigate the major differences and similarities in structure and content between the 10 laws. This, in turn, allows for the re-assessment of many long-standing problems in Swedish and European medieval legal history that have been challenging to address with traditional methods based on text analyses. Over the course of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, major changes in the proportion of legal provisions devoted to different fields of law, and to prescribed consequences, are found. The book shows how the proportions of civil law and public law expanded at the expense of criminal law. Furthermore, a clear transition from casuistic to more abstract law provisions can also be witnessed.

Book The Relationship Between Swedish and Immigrant Adolescents

Download or read book The Relationship Between Swedish and Immigrant Adolescents written by David Mellor (M. Clin. Psychology.) and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swedish society has changed rapidly in recent years because of a large and rather sudden influx of immigrants. The ethnic and racial attitudes of the present adolescent population are of great interest, therefore, because they will establish the future of racial relations in Sweden. Two separate studies analyzed the congruence-discongruence of interracial perceptions among Swedes and immigrants. The first study investigated the attitudes of sample groups of Swedish, Finnish, and Assyrian adolescents in Sodertalje, an industrial town with a large number of immigrants. In summary, the findings show that Swedish and Finnish males have the most negative attitudes of any group, and these are directed toward the Assyrians. The Assyrians say they have neutral-to-positive attitudes toward both Swedes and Finns, and Swedish and Finnish females report similar attitudes toward Assyrians. The second study compared responses of the Sodertalje Swedish sample with those of an adolescent sample from Falun, a community having minimal contact with immigrants. The Falun and Sodertalje Swedes, it was found, have similarly negative attitudes toward Assyrians, but the Sodertalje adolescents have more positive attitudes toward the Finns. Further, it seems that sex plays a greater role than contact in such issues, and males in general are more extreme than females in their attitudes and understanding. Whether these findings call for a radical revision of Sodertalje schools is unclear, but cooperative learning techniques would possibly be of use in reducing prejudice. The preface and chapter 5 of the document, containing summary and conclusions, are presented in both English and Swedish. (KH)

Book Language Contacts and Discourses in the Far North

Download or read book Language Contacts and Discourses in the Far North written by Maria Frick and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book sheds light on 21st-Century multilingualism in the Far North of Europe – Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Estonia – an area with multifaceted contacts between many Uralic and Indo-European languages. These contacts are taking new forms as migration and English as the lingua franca are changing the linguistic situation remarkably. The national languages dominate the life of most inhabitants, while the use of indigenous Saami languages, old minority languages, and the languages of new immigrants is limited to certain areas or domains. This volume takes a close look at multilingual individuals and discusses how their lives are affected by different languages.

Book Painting Culture Painting Nature

Download or read book Painting Culture Painting Nature written by Gunlög Fur and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1920s, a group of young Kiowa artists, pursuing their education at the University of Oklahoma, encountered Swedish-born art professor Oscar Brousse Jacobson (1882–1966). With Jacobson’s instruction and friendship, the Kiowa Six, as they are now known, ignited a spectacular movement in American Indian art. Jacobson, who was himself an accomplished painter, shared a lifelong bond with group member Stephen Mopope (1898–1974), a prolific Kiowa painter, dancer, and musician. Painting Culture, Painting Nature explores the joint creativity of these two visionary figures and reveals how indigenous and immigrant communities of the early twentieth century traversed cultural, social, and racial divides. Painting Culture, Painting Nature is a story of concurrences. For a specific period, immigrants such as Jacobson and disenfranchised indigenous people such as Mopope transformed Oklahoma into the center of exciting new developments in Indian art, which quickly spread to other parts of the United States and to Europe. Jacobson and Mopope came from radically different worlds, and were on unequal footing in terms of power and equality, but they both experienced, according to author Gunlög Fur, forms of diaspora or displacement. Seeking to root themselves anew in Oklahoma, the dispossessed artists fashioned new mediums of compelling and original art. Although their goals were compatible, Jacobson’s and Mopope’s subjects and styles diverged. Jacobson painted landscapes of the West, following a tradition of painting nature uninfluenced by human activity. Mopope, in contrast, strove to capture the cultural traditions of his people. The two artists shared a common nostalgia, however, for a past life that they could only re-create through their art. Whereas other books have emphasized the promotion of Indian art by Euro-Americans, this book is the first to focus on the agency of the Kiowa artists within the context of their collaboration with Jacobson. The volume is further enhanced by full-color reproductions of the artists’ works and rare historical photographs.

Book Functional Perspectives on Grammar and Discourse

Download or read book Functional Perspectives on Grammar and Discourse written by Christopher S. Butler and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a tribute to Angela Downing, consists of twenty papers taking a broadly functional perspective on language, with topics ranging from the general (grammar as an evolutionary product, text comprehension, integrative linguistics) to particular aspects of the grammars of languages (Bulgarian, English, Icelandic, Spanish, Swedish). The more specific papers are sequenced according to Halliday’s division into ideational, textual and interpersonal aspects of the grammar, and cover a wide range of areas, including aspect, argument structure, noun phrase/nominal group structure and nominalisations, pronominal clitics, theme in relation to writing skills, discourse structures and markers, the role of attention in conversation, the functions of topic, phatic communion, subjectification, formulaic language and modality. A recurrent theme in the volume is the use of corpus materials in order to base functional descriptions on authentic productions. Overall, the volume constitutes a panoramic but nevertheless detailed view of some important current trends in functional linguistics.

Book Constructional Approaches to Nordic Languages

Download or read book Constructional Approaches to Nordic Languages written by Evie Coussé and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents eight studies of linguistic phenomena in Nordic languages (notably Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish) from a construction grammar perspective. The contributions both deepen and widen the focus of construction grammar applied to Nordic languages by dealing with a variety of topics, such as the constructional network, pseudo-coordination, additional language learning and emerging multilingualism, prototypical semantics in argument structure constructions, and domain-specific discourse and language behavior. The volume showcases the vibrant research activity within part of the construction grammar community dealing with Nordic languages, contributing to the knowledge about the structure, use and learning of these languages, as well as to the field of construction grammar as a whole.
