Book excerpt: Gary Hume (b. 1962) is renowned for paintings distinguished by a bright palette, reduced imagery, and flat areas of seductive color. While Hume's paintings have always emphasized their luscious surfaces and simplified forms, many are infused with a melancholic beauty. Hume first received critical acclaim with a body of work known as the "Door" paintings. These minimal and abstract works, with their high-gloss paint and insistent reflective surfaces, developed in the early 1990s into a broader set of motifs, such as the nude, the portrait, the garden, as well as a pictorial idiom drawn from childhood, with images of polar bears, snowmen, rabbits, owls and close-up faces. His subject matter broadened yet more through the mid 1990s to incorporate images from popular culture, making portraits of celebrity figures such as Kate Moss, British radio DJ Tony Blackburn, and actress Patsy Kensit. For the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1999), he produced the "Water Paintings," large-scale works of multiple, overlapping line drawings of nudes punctuated by flat areas of color. "Cave Paintings," the title of his most recent show at White Cube, featured seven marble tableaux composed of a variety of different stones set against each other in collaged sections that appear like tectonic plates. These are held together by a lead tracery that provides the edge to the expanses of color, traced by the natural faults and veins inherent in the stone itself. These monolithic compositions are hand-carved and richly decadent, combining visual motifs from the natural world with imagery suggestive of human birth and fundamental emotions. Gary Hume was born in Kent in 1962 and lives and works in London and upstate New York. Book excerpt: Offering a unique glimpse into an artist’s studio, this publication visually explores both the process and the finished work of one of today’s leading contemporary artists. Built around a series of photographs by Andreas Laszlo Konrath taken over the course of multiple visits to Carol Bove’s studio in Brooklyn, this catalogue offers a behind-the-scenes look into her practice. Through the photographs, the reader experiences not only the development of her most recent body of sculptures—referred to by the artist as “collage sculptures”—but also the materials and conditions that contribute to their creation. They are constructed from square steel tubing that has been crushed and shaped at the studio, found scrap metals, and shallow, highly polished discs. Painted in vivid colors, the sculptures appear lightweight and improvisational despite their heavy materiality. In addition to Konrath’s rich and intimate photographs, also included are images of individual works shown silhouetted out of their original context, an attempt by the artist to draw the viewer away from typical ways of experiencing sculpture. Created by the artist in close collaboration with designer Joseph Logan and published on the occasion of her eponymous show at David Zwirner, New York, in November 2016, Polka Dots features an essay by Johanna Burton that charts Bove’s fascination with process and commitment to disrupting traditional ways of seeing. A chronology provides a summary of Bove’s exhibitions and installations in major museums and private institutions around the world, offering a thorough resource for those interested in the artist’s development across time.

Book excerpt: The result of a deliberative process guided by careful attention to spatial relationships, Suzan Frecon’s large-scale oil paintings are composed of asymmetrical curves that result in minor and major measured areas of color. Accompanying the artist’s solo exhibitions at David Zwirner, New York and London, in 2017, this publication features a selection of new monumental paintings carefully reproduced both as individual works and in installation views to best convey the experience of seeing the work. Depending on the viewer’s position and the time of day, the contrasts of matte and sheen, positive and negative, and immediacy and radiance combine to create an ongoing visual experience of always varying subtleties. In contrast to the paintings, Frecon’s watercolors, also featured here, engage the relationship between paint and paper support. Each predetermined sheet—often from an agate-burnished old Indian ledger page—has its own innate character, properties, and irregular shape; its creases, holes, blemishes, and even faint writings become an integral component of the final watercolor. “Their truth is the paint,” Frecon says, and in a specially commissioned essay acclaimed art historian Richard Shiff examines the new body of work in relationship to painting and the experience of looking.
