Objetivando interromper a caminhada em direção à autodestruição, especialistas criaram o conceito de sustentabilidade, segundo o qual existe uma imperiosa necessidade de se compatibilizar aspectos econômicos, sociais e ambientais, de maneira a viabilizar um desenvolvimento que preserve o meio ambiente e garanta o bem-estar da população. O livro Sustentabilidade, igualdade social e outros devaneios traz argumentos que mostram que a sustentabilidade não passa de um conceito vago e abstrato, que não sai do papel e que pouco contribui com a resolução dos grandes problemas enfrentados pela sociedade moderna. Assim, a sustentabilidade não passa de um conjunto utópico de boas intenções, das quais o inferno está cheio. No final das contas, tudo indica que a sustentabilidade de alguns se escora na pobreza de muitos, o que faz com que, na crueldade do mundo real, a pobreza seja um mal necessário. Assim, sustentabilidade e igualdade social são propostas que seguem caminhos diferentes, que somente se encontram no discurso vazio e irresponsável de quem vende a sustentabilidade sem conhecer as reais necessidades das classes menos favorecidas.

Predatory lending of subprime mortgages targeting the most economically vulnerable minority communities helped trigger the current global financial crisis. This special issue of the journal American Quarterly explores the ways in which “subprime” becomes a racial signifier in the current debate about the causes and fixes for a capitalism itself in crisis. It signifies both the accumulated dispossession of racial exclusion in the twenty-first century gilded age in the United States and Global North more broadly, as well as the imperial ambitions of three decades of U.S.–led neoliberal rule over the Global South. Book excerpt: Reflecting the decline in college courses on Western Civilization, Marshall Sahlins aims to accelerate the trend by reducing "Western Civ" to about two hours. He cites Nietzsche to the effect that deep issues are like cold baths; one should get into and out of them as quickly as possible. The deep issue here is the ancient Western specter of a presocial and antisocial human nature: a supposedly innate self-interest that is represented in our native folklore as the basis or nemesis of cultural order. Yet these Western notions of nature and culture ignore the one truly universal character of human sociality: namely, symbolically constructed kinship relations. Kinsmen are members of one another: they live each other's lives and die each other's deaths. But where the existence of the other is thus incorporated in the being of the self, neither interest, nor agency or even experience is an individual fact, let alone an egoistic disposition. "Sorry, beg your pardon," Sahlins concludes, Western society has been built on a perverse and mistaken idea of human nature.
