Book Swords and Sustenance

Download or read book Swords and Sustenance written by Robert Legvold and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-02-20 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of the former Soviet states is threatened by their precarious geopolitical position within a turbulent economic and political environment. Swords and Sustenance explores the complex economic dimension of national security for two key post-Soviet countries, Belarus and Ukraine—that is, how they have dealt with the challenges posed by internal economic and political reform and their relationships with Russia and the West. The book first examines how differing commitments to economic and political reform (reform is largely absent in Belarus) affect Belarusian and Ukrainian approaches to security. It then considers the central role of Russia, and how Russian interests and policies toward Belarus and Ukraine limit the two countries' foreign and domestic policy choices. Two chapters discuss the national security implications for Belarus and Ukraine of two key economic factors in their foreign policy: energy trade (in the form of oil, gas, and pipelines) and military-industrial cooperation (including the sale of arms). Finally, the book considers the relationships of Belarus and Ukraine with regional and global institutions and explores the policies of the EU, NATO, and the United States toward Belarus and Ukraine.

Book excerpt: In the year 1846, sixteen-year-old Martha Burt and her family leave their homestead in Illinois and travel westward on the trail mapped out by Lewis and Clark on their return from the Oregon Territory to Missouri. The men in the wagon train were energized by dreams of free land and a better life for all, dreams sometimes incomprehensible to their womenfolk, who endured incredible hardships on the journey. The wagon train arrives in the Oregon Territory six months later, having survived sandstorms, Indian attacks, prairie fires, buffalo stampedes, and the death of many fellow travelers. Martha grows from a sheltered young girl into a competent woman. The pioneers are deeply saddened by the loss of so many loved ones, yet are filled with hope by the possibilities the future holds.

Book Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly Parents

Download or read book Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly Parents written by Gloria G. Barsamian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a practical exploration of one of today's most complex and challenging issues—the care of an elderly parent—with an innovative approach that emphasizes how rewarding the caregiver/care-receiver relationship can be. For anyone facing this often overwhelming situation, Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly Parents: Bread of Angels offers a wealth of insights from experienced caregivers, extraordinary personal stories, and most importantly, reassurance and support. It is a refreshing new vision of the positive potential for caregiving and the rewards that come with evolving relationships between adult children and their parents. Gloria G. Barsamian's remarkably perceptive new volume dispels the myth that caretaking is a thankless burden. Like no other work, it captures the emotions of today's millions of caregivers, as well as care-receivers, spouses, and grandchildren. A longtime social worker, Barsamian shows how old ways of thinking about caregiving can be replaced with new, healthier possibilities that enrich the lives of caregivers and care-receivers.

Book Abu Zayd al Balkhi s Sustenance of the Soul

Download or read book Abu Zayd al Balkhi s Sustenance of the Soul written by Malik Badri and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-Balki explains symptoms and treatments giving advice on preventive measures and how to return the body and soul to their natural healthy state. In doing so he displays a keen understanding of the human condition and the medical nature of the human emotional state. An astonishing feat given that many of the conditions he discusses were left largely unknown and untreated for centuries before being clinically defined as such, only as relatively recently as the 20th century. A genius, his insights on human psychopathology as well as diagnoses of psychological ailments including stress, depression, fear and anxiety, phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders, together with their treatment by cognitive behavior therapy, relate to us in every way and are in sync with modern psychology. Importantly, they also incorporate a greater dimension to include the soul and the worship of God.

Download or read book Sustenance for the Body Soul written by Dr Debra D Andrist and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food-secure and/or privileged worldwide no longer eat and drink simply to maintain life itself. They have the advantage and choice to regard "sustenance" not just as fuel for the body/machine but as a source of pleasure and entertainment for the mind/intellect. This enhanced concept of "sustenance" embraces all the senses: visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile, thus including not just food & drink but ceremonies & art forms dealing with them. This book explores the substantive ways food & drink impact human existence. The work comprises five parts: medicine; ceremonies; literature & cinema; art & artists; space/architecture & advertising/art. Food & drink start with the physical, morph into nutrition, the most basic requirements for organic life, but progress from the beginning of physical process to ceremony and expression. The result and the experience highlight physiological and sensual concepts, and indeed, preference. Food & drink staples are determined by geographic availability and cuisine & beverage are closely associated with culture & ethnicity. Contributor exploration is wide-ranging: Aztec, Mexican & Spanish medicine; African & Roman Catholic rites; cookbook discourse and socio-gender influence; literature, including cultural comparisons of cooking and cooks; preparation & representation of food & drink as artistic endeavours, including by Latin American women, and types of inspirational "fodder", especially in the context of Picasso's art in Spain & France, & Spanish wine museums & labelling. Sustenance for the Body & Soul is the seventh book in the Hispanic Worlds series, details of which are available on the press website.

Book Heavenly Sustenance in Patristic Texts and Byzantine Iconography

Download or read book Heavenly Sustenance in Patristic Texts and Byzantine Iconography written by Elena Ene D-Vasilescu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines ideas of spiritual nourishment as maintained chiefly by Patristic theologians –those who lived in Byzantium. It shows how a particular type of Byzantine frescoes and icons illustrated the views of Patristic thinkers on the connections between the heavenly and the earthly worlds. The author explores the occurrence, and geographical distribution, of this new type of iconography that manifested itself in representations concerned with the human body, and argues that these were a reaction to docetist ideas. The volume also investigates the diffusion of saints’ cults and demonstrates that this took place on a North-South axis as their veneration began in Byzantium and gradually reached the northern part of Europe, and eventually the entirety of Christendom.
