Book Sustainable Structural Engineering

Download or read book Sustainable Structural Engineering written by John E. Anderson and published by International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. This book was released on 2015-01-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is the defining challenge for engineers in the twenty-first century. In addition to safe, economic, and effi-cient structures, a new criterion, sustainable, must be met. Furthermore, this new design paradigm–addressing social, economic, and environmental aspects–requires prompt action. In particular, mitigation of climate change requires sustainable solutions for new as well as existing structures. Taking from both practice and research, this book provides engineers with applicable, timely, and innovative information on the state-of-the-art in sustainable structural design. This Structural Engineering Document addresses safety and regulations, integration concepts, and a sustainable approach to structural design. Life-cycle assessment is presented as a critical tool to quantify design options, and the importance of existing structures–in particular cultural heritage structures–is critically reviewed. Consideration is also given to bridge design and maintenance, structural reassessment, and disaster risk reduction. Finally, the importance of environmentally friendly concrete is examined. Consequently, structural engineers are shown to have the technical proficiency, as well as ethical imperative, to lead in designing a sustainable future.

Download or read book Sustainability Guidelines for the Structural Engineer written by Structural Engineering Institute. Sustainability Committee and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainability Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineer s Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE SEI) prepared these guidelines to advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. This book will educate and guide structural engineers as they meet the challenge to design and construct a sustainable built environment. The guidelines are organized into five sections: Sustainable Design and Construction, Sustainable Strategies, Building Materials, Infrastructure, and Case Studies. Although many of the subjects presented are related, each section and the related subsections have been written to stand alone, allowing this report to be used as a practical reference. This report was written for structural engineers, but related disciplines will also benefit from the contents. The book includes an important section on infrastructure because, many of the concepts and ideas presented in this guide relate to infrastructure, as well as design and construction.

Book Numerical Structural Analysis

Download or read book Numerical Structural Analysis written by Steven O'Hara and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As structural engineers move further into the age of digital com-putation and rely more heavily on computers to solve problems, it remains paramount that they understand the basic mathemat-ics and engineering principles used to design and analyze build-ing structures. The link between the basic concepts and appli-cation to real world problems is one of the most challenging learning endeavors that structural engineers face. The primary purpose of Numerical Structural Analysis is to assist structural engineering students with developing the abil-ity to solve complex structural analysis problems. This book will cover numerical techniques to solve mathematical formulations, which are necessary in developing the analysis procedures for structural engineering. Once the numerical formulations are un-derstood, engineers can then develop structural analysis meth-ods that use these techniques. This will be done primarily with matrix structural stiffness procedures. Finally, advanced stiffness topics will be developed and presented to solve unique struc-tural problems, including member end releases, non-prismatic, shear, geometric, and torsional stiffness.
