Book excerpt: Emerging to the forefront of sustainable production and consumption are a promising and rapidly evolving concept known as Voluntary Standard Systems (VSS). They encompass the three pillars of sustainability – social, environmental and economic aspects and consequently they can be considered as a tool, which makes sustainable development visible. It places VSS in the broader context of global development issues and challenges, including development policy and international sustainability commitments, progress towards achieving ‘green economy’ and meeting climate protection targets. Book Voluntary Sustainability Standards

Download or read book Voluntary Sustainability Standards written by Danielle Denny and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article begins by explaining private standards in an international context. On one hand, standards have an important role in shaping social environmental sustainability and therefore promoting economic, political, cultural and geographical development. On the other hand, their uncoordinated proliferation can generate misleading signals and measurements, compromising their ability to fulfill their role. The non-governmental nature of these regulations poses challenges to uniform standardization across the global value chain. In face of this problem, some countries have launched national platforms to establish minimal criteria on which the standard can be created. This study argues that this kind of meta-regulation is necessary.
