Download or read book Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Sub Saharan Africa written by Norma Juma and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis: This paper focuses on the social context in which sustainable entrepreneurship flourishes. Our aim is to provide a framework for understanding the creation and emergence of social value and sustainability within an entrepreneurial context. We used the cross-case analysis to analyse the 49 archival cases and the nested approach to examine interview scripts gathered from two companies: Honey Care Africa nd Oliberte. Key findings: Whereas the entrepreneur is the central hub of venturing there is strong interdependence with its partners. Incidental findings: Financial self-sufficiency is neither the sole nor a leading criterion used to measure sustainability among the 49 archival cases. Most organizations emphasized gender equality and inclusive approach in all their initiatives. Schools were used as centers for training and disseminating information while universities were engaged mostly in research projects. Building schools, supporting schools or paying school fees were strong motivation for starting enterprises.

Book Africa and Sustainable Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Africa and Sustainable Entrepreneurship written by Christian Ehiobuche and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is entrepreneurial and environmental sustainability the only way to safeguard Mother Earth? Professors Nyaanga and Ehiobuche present perspectives, prospects, and opportunities that African entrepreneurship offers and more effective strategies and principles to thrive. Given the distinctiveness of the African continent in terms of its economic infrastructure, political systems, extreme poverty, rapid urbanization, deforestation, environmental impact of the extractive industries, rate of economic growth, rural development, high dependence on foreign aid, low human capital, rising high youth unemployment, climatic variability, natural environmental hazards, abundant natural resources, and alluring consumer goods, most people would concur that at its heart, entrepreneurship is the identification of possibilities in the unmet, underserved, and growing needs of people through the mobilization of resources and the establishment of enterprises. Still, the nature of the activity is very context-sensitive. What functions in one setting and for one population will not necessarily function in another. The needs themselves, as well as the approaches and structures that can be produced acceptably, vary from one place and person to another. Although many business owners believe sustainability is important in their personal lives, they are persuaded that they lack the means to implement it in their fledgling business entities. This book presents baby steps and common-sense ways to see that sustainability is the most effective strategy for ensuring long-term success.

Book The Business of Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book The Business of Sustainable Development in Africa written by Ralph Hamann and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about enhancing the contribution of business to sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on both challenges and opportunities. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where the proportion of extremely poor people increased during the final decades of the previous century. The overarching imperative to support Africa's poor in their quest for better livelihoods, human rights and environmental integrity, is a huge challenge, and the business community has an important role to play. The purpose of this book is to contribute to a better understanding of this role and its implications for decision-makers in business, as well as, to some extent, government and civil society.--Publisher's description.

Book Social entrepreneurial success factors in Sub Saharan Africa Which factors help social enterprises to scale successfully and foster sustainable development

Download or read book Social entrepreneurial success factors in Sub Saharan Africa Which factors help social enterprises to scale successfully and foster sustainable development written by Mara Garavini Seisselberg and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Review of Business Studies, grade: 1.0, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This work will analyze the reality of social entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa, through qualitative interviews in the field. By talking to social entrepreneurs of different countries and sectors in the region, it will possible to give a holistic understanding of what social enterprises need, in order to succeed. Social enterprises still face different internal and external challenges that need to be overcome: From equal access to talent, finance and social networks. To existing policies, which currently are not creating enough favorable incentives to support social enterprises. And an overall stigma and mindset around Sub-Saharan Africa, dominated by stereotypes of poverty, instability and risk. Based on this multidimensional understanding of the obstacles, which hinder social entrepreneurial success in the region, this paper will elaborate concrete recommendations: both in terms of internal and external factors, such as policy and mindset transformation. Social entrepreneurship and its difficulties and success factors in Sub-Saharan Africa are still under-researched. This field especially lacks empirical studies. Literature offers theoretical knowledge about the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship in general and a holistic insight about specific business conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. A desk review of existing literature in this area will form the theoretical-contextual foundation for the qualitative field-research of this paper. The analysis of the qualitative data will be carried out within four different categories in order to allow a comprehensive understanding of social entrepreneurial success factors: Human capital, financial capital, social capital and business environment. Within the discussion, based on the qualitative results, this paper will be able to formulate recommendations as to how social entrepreneurial success factors could be achieved and leveraged. The results of which will be summarized within the conclusion and form the foundation for answering the core research question of this work: which factors help social enterprises to scale successfully and foster sustainable development? An outlook of possible future research topics will conclude this paper.

Book Africapitalism

Download or read book Africapitalism written by Uwafiokun Idemudia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using theory, empirical research, and case studies, this book explores the changing nature of business in Africa and how businesses can actively contribute to the development of Africa. It uses (and critically analyses) the concept of Africapitalism – a management philosophy and movement which seeks to blend the best of African values and Western management theories as a basis for sustainable development in Africa – to understand the subtle factors that underpin business decisions in Africa. The collection of chapters in this book are organized around actors, issues, and reflections. They collectively present an account of Africapitalism, albeit from different perspectives and on different issues, and open up a new space for rethinking business and society relations in Africa from an Africapitalism perspective. Crucial is the critical engagement with both the discourse and practice of Africapitalism and its implications for sustainable development. It is anticipated that the challenges and opportunities highlighted by the book would be embraced by researchers, policy makers, and practitioners in the broad area of business and society in Africa. This multidisciplinary book will be valuable reading for advanced students, researchers and policymakers looking at business in society; corporate social responsibility; sustainable business; international business and African development.

Book Youth Entrepreneurship and Africa s Sustainable Industrialization

Download or read book Youth Entrepreneurship and Africa s Sustainable Industrialization written by Farai Kapfudzaruwa and published by Spears Media Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the prospects of Africa’s sustainable industrialization, with an emphasis on youth entrepreneurship and the mechanisms in place to support both industrial and corporate entrepreneurs. The volume addresses two specific issues; first, industrialization and youth entrepreneurship and secondly, youth entrepreneurship training and education. The emphasis on youth entrepreneurship to drive sustainable industrialization in Africa is driven by three points: first, Africa’s industrialization is still at its inception with severely limited existing stock of entrepreneurial talents, which makes it imperative to look to the continent’s bulging youth population – the “population dividend” for the needed supply of successive generations of entrepreneurs. Secondly, sustainable industrialization would have to be oriented to “green”, “ICT” and “inclusive” growth which calls for a change in entrepreneurs’ attitudes. Finally, at the centre of the “Africa Rising” narrative is a budding new “cheetah” generation of young entrepreneurs who are highly educated, professional and motivated by the need to set up new business models and practices to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This volume forms part of an Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) book series involving the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability and 8 partner African universities running Master’s Programs in sustainable development. The book series is intended to serve primarily as undergraduate and graduate instruction materials for courses on sustainable development in Africa, as well as policy input to key developmental issues in Africa.

Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of a rising population in Africa and the lowering opportunities for white collar jobs, as well as the continent’s limited access to resources, this edited collection demystifies the interconnectedness between the factors and actors involved with innovation and entrepreneurship development in sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) informal economy for more effective, result-oriented outcomes. Book Social Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development of Sub Sahar

Download or read book Social Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development of Sub Sahar written by Maria Syvänen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last 50 years Western countries have dictated how developing countries should progress, while 4 billion people worldwide are still living under two dollars a day. The poor in rural Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are even under-positioned. The dominant factors of poor infrastructures, unemployment and inadequate access to water, sanitation and energy have all led to grave outcomes. Western governments and civil society actors have indeed applied first world solutions to this societal problem, yet with poor performances. Objections are also put towards large companies' Corporate Social Responsibility practises. On the other hand, the new phenomenon of Social Entrepreneurship has come forth wherein social value is prioritized over its economic counterpart. Through developing world solutions, social entrepreneurs help the poor by providing innovative ways to create sustainable development. This research thus sought to examine social entrepreneurial activity's potential procedures in contributing to sustainable development in rural SSA. This book is recommended to all actors interested in social entrepreneurship and wanting to comprehend locally appropriate activity in rural SSA.
