About half of the originally forested area has been deforested in the past decades and the pressure on today’s remaining rain forests is still growing.The German-Indonesian research project STORMA (“Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia”) analyses the causes, circumstances, and consequences of rain forest conversion. In its survey area in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia), vast areas of intact rain forest still exist but are currently facing increasing exploitation by the rural population. Especially the expansion of cultivation area for cocoa and maize represents a major threat for local rain forests.Remote sensing plays an important role in the examination of rain forest loss, because it allows the regionalisation and quantification of spatial developments at different scales. In his book, Christian Knieper gains information about land cover and land cover change in Central Sulawesi on the basis of a Landsat 7/ETM+ time series. He applies a modern object-oriented approach which allows the analysis of non-spectral features (e.g. shape, spatial relations, thematic data) and goes beyond the pure isolated statistical examination of each pixel’s spectral values offered by traditional remote sensing techniques. The gathered results on land cover change provide essential information for socio-economic as well as ecological research activities within STORMA.

Based on in-depth studies conducted in the cities of Yogyakarta and Surabaya, complemented with surveys of students in secondary schools, Environmental Education in Indonesia examines educational curricula, pedagogy and "green" activities to reveal what is currently being done in schools to educate children about the environment. The book investigates the shortcomings in environment education, including underqualified teachers, the civil service mentality, the still-pervasive chalk-and-talk pedagogy and the effect of the examination system. It also analyses the role of local government in supporting (or not) environmental education, and the contribution of environmental NGOs. The book establishes that young people are not currently being exposed to effective environmental education, and the authors propose that the best and most culturally appropriate way forward in Indonesia is to frame pro-environment behaviour and responsibility as a form of citizenship, and specifically that environmental education should be taught as a separate subject. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Indonesia and Southeast Asia, education for sustainability and environmental education, as well as sustainability and sustainable development more generally. Book excerpt: Most of Indonesian population live in rural areas, and the majority of poor people also live in rural areas, namely 13.47% in rural and 7.26 in urban. In the past decades, rural communities as well as the ecology have changed fundamentally. Many factors contribute to this transformation: development programs from the government as well as from private and NGOs; the diffusion of information technology; the development of transportation facilities; the rise of education and health levels, interaction with "outsiders", and so on. A main driving factor for rural development has been agrarian liberalization. This can be seen in the development of transnational plantations, which trigger land grab and rise of land demand. Development trough liberalization also had a negative impact, since the development of modern and industrialized agriculture affected the environment, and the expansion of plantations caused changes in the agricultural systems of villages and the life orientation of local communities. Interventions in villages by private companies, intermediary institutions no doubt have brought a structural transformations in rural live: local institutions, livelihood systems, population structures, ecosystems, and relation to the land. Unfortunately, the social, economic, cultural, and ecological transformation of the rural community not always produces improvement of quality of life for the rural community. At the same time, information and data related to rural transformations are scarcely available at research institutions, universities, NGOs, private enterprises. Rural Socio-Economic Transformation: Agrarian, Ecology, Communication and Community, Development Perspectives discusses many aspects of the social, economic, cultural, and ecological transformation of rural life in Indonesia, and is of interest to academics and policy makers interested or involved in these areas.
