Book Community Development on the North Atlantic Margin

Download or read book Community Development on the North Atlantic Margin written by John Hutson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Isolated communities, dependent upon fishing, farming and forestry, which are scattered around the North Atlantic coast, have shared a disastrous decline during the last decade. These communities are in the peripheries of advanced industrial nation-states, such as Canada and supra-national alliances, such as the European Community, yet despite this, there are no easy solutions to the development of these regions. This volume argues that the productive assets of these regions, and how they can be used to sustain household incomes, need to be better understood. The assets need to be converted into products and services and they need to be marketed profitably. The diminshing flow of young people who leave these areas to obtain higher education and who do not return must be turned around and efforts must be concentrated on the creation or strengthening of economic conditions which satisfy the younger generation's employment aspirations, consumer requirements and social needs.

Book Cultural Sustainability and Regional Development

Download or read book Cultural Sustainability and Regional Development written by Joost Dessein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the aims of sustainability is becoming increasingly difficult; at the same time, the call for culture is becoming more powerful. This book explores the relationships between culture, sustainability and regional change through the concept of ‘territorialisation’. This new concept describes the dynamics and processes in the context of regional development, driven by collective human agency that stretches beyond localities and marked-off regional boundaries. This book launches the concept of ‘territorialisation’ by exploring how the natural environment and culture are constitutive of each other. This concept allows us to study the characterisation of the natural assets of a place, the means by which the natural environment and culture interact, and how communities assign meaning to local assets, add functions and ascribe rules of how to use space. By highlighting the time-space dimension in the use and consumption of resources, territorialisation helps to frame the concept and grasp the meaning of sustainable regional development. Drawing on an international range of case studies, the book addresses both conceptual issues and practical applications of ‘territorialisation’ in a range of contexts, forms, and scales. The book will be of great interest to researchers and postgraduates in sustainable development, environmental studies, and regional development and planning.

The hinterlands of these countries, sparsely-populated and heavily dependent on primary production (fishing, farming, forestry and mineral extraction), are threatened with the loss of their capacity to maintain their populations, sparse as they are already, as heavy industries retrench, agricultural subsidies are scaled down, fishing grounds are depleted and the end of the Cold War brings about the closure of military installations in remote areas.

Geographies of Agriculture embraces these changes, applying ideas and methods from contemporary social science, as it moves beyond farm-based production to address current issues affecting the production and consumption of food and fibre throughout the world. The book places special emphasis on topics that reflect globalisation processes, integration of agriculture into the wider agri-food system, concern with attaining sustainable production systems, and the importance of both government and supra-government policies. Examples are drawn from North America, Western Europe and the developing world. Geographies of Agriculture will appeal especially to Geography students, but should also be of interest to a broader range of students in Sociology, Economics and Development Studies, and anyone interested in agriculture, food production and consumption, and rural development.

Book Sustainable Development on the North Atlantic Margin

Download or read book Sustainable Development on the North Atlantic Margin written by Reginald Byron and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to bring together a wide range of experiences from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to issues concerned with sustainable development in diverse settings throughout the North Atlantic margin regions. Sustainability is about managing development on a global scale. Its fundamental precept is that providing for the needs of the present generation should not impoverish future generations. The book aims to look at the moral and political questions: should we ensure that future generations are no worse off than we are, and how can this be done? To answer these questions the book covers such topics as, concepts, processes, and strategies in sustainable development, area-based strategies for sustainable development - looking at Ireland, Norway, and Wales - sustainable approaches to tourism development, and sustainable development of argicultural communities.
