Book Sustainable Development of Environment Friendly Commercial Poultry Industry in Bangladesh

Download or read book Sustainable Development of Environment Friendly Commercial Poultry Industry in Bangladesh written by Mohammad Shamsuddoha and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poultry meat is known as global product and it is the fastest growing component of global meat production, consumption and marketing. In the line of global market demand of poultry meat, poultry farms in Bangladesh are growing fast in recent times. Again, agriculture generated 39% of the GDP and the share of the livestock sub-sector is 2.8% (Brammer et. al., 1996). Further, with increasing population and decreasing land holdings, the poultry population is increasing at the rate of 6.5% per year (Huque & Stem, 1993). Mainly due to population growth, there is a gap between supply and demand of poultry meats and eggs. As such, a number of studies were found to have been conducted over the various aspects of this sector of economy in Bangladesh or elsewhere in the subject area. But study on “sustainable development of environment friendly commercial poultry industry in Bangladesh” seems to have attracted little attention embracing various relevant aspects of sustainable development of poultry industry in Bangladesh. The discussions made below will clearly support this assumption: Huque and Ukil (1993) studied the distribution of poultry birds according to land holdings in Bangladesh. Huque and Stem (1994) made an analysis of the current status of poultry production and marketing system of Bangladesh. Das et. al. (2007) reviewed the current status of poultry production and its future prospects in Bangladesh covering both rural and commercial poultry production. He opined that industrialists need to come forward to provide funds to universities and research works on poultry industry covering its different dimensions. Raihan and Mahmud (2008) studied the linkage between trade and poverty alleviation. They argued that the poultry sector should protect from fierce foreign competition adopting various measures like high levels of import duty, import levy and the likes. Alam (1997) identified that the poultry contributed the improvement of socio-economic status, consumption capability, empowerment, new income and employment opportunities for the poultry farmers. The review of the early works on the same subjects area in Bangladesh and else where evidence that sustainable development of environment friendly poultry industry as a whole or various aspects of sustainability in context of poultry industry was not examined in detail through research works. This research gap motivated the present researcher to undertake this study on “sustainable development of environment friendly commercial poultry industry in Bangladesh”

Book Integrating Forward and Reverse Supply Chain Processes for Sustainable Poultry Production in Bangladesh

Download or read book Integrating Forward and Reverse Supply Chain Processes for Sustainable Poultry Production in Bangladesh written by Mohammad Shamsuddoha and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of poultry farming in Bangladesh has generated considerable employment through the production and marketing of poultry and poultry related products. Small improvements in the industry, in productivity, economic and social terms, will substantially increase the benefits to its stakeholders. A revolution in the poultry industry has achieved more than 400 percent growth in the last 15 years, though the industry continues to face challenges such as developing effective policy, workforce skills, modern technology, expertise, modern laboratories and structured supply chain logistics. More or less, 15 million peoples are taking economically benefit from this industry through commercial and conventional backyard poultry farming. Approximately, 3,000 million dollars (Aus) have been invested by private poultry entrepreneurs by acquiring inadequate scientific knowledge on waste management, bird rearing and its supply chain. Supply chain and sustainability issues are becoming more important in the poultry sector in Bangladesh as these issues are considered likely to resolve the existing chaotic problems of the industry. Forward supply chain (FSC) and reverse supply chain (RSC) issues in the poultry industry had received very little attention in the existing literature. There is a significant gap in such literature that is addressed by this proposed research study. If sustainability and forward/reverse supply chain issues can be addressed in the industry, opportunities will be developed for increasing productivity and profitability, generating employment and establishing small medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, in this research, a simulation model will be developed for use within the existing poultry processes by adding FSC and RSC issues to ensure optimal social, economic and environmental benefits. This research seeks to contribute to the theory and practices in the industry, to develop a sustainability process model based on the simulation, and to assist in the implementation of FSC and RSC processes. The proposed poultry process model will be developed with the view of supporting real-life situations to promote optimal outcomes.

Book Integrated Organic Farming Systems Approach for Efficient Food Production and Environmental Sustainability

Download or read book Integrated Organic Farming Systems Approach for Efficient Food Production and Environmental Sustainability written by Subhash Babu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and policy planners are in search of a solution to address the twin challenges of maximizing agricultural production while maintaining/ improving ecosystem sustainability. Enhancing farm productivity is needed in certain regions of the world to satisfy local food consumption and farmers' needs. Linear economy-based-input intensive conventional agriculture (CAPS) has increased production output but has not made agriculture more sustainable. Henceforth, a farming system that aims to reduce the adverse impact on the environment, as well as enhance agricultural productivity by reducing environmental footprint and improving soil health and economic wellbeing is needed in the present day. Integrated organic farming systems (IOFS) involve residue recycling, bio-intensive cropping, high-tech horticulture, mushroom, dairy, poultry, fishery, apiary, etc can improve the ecosystem health and augment the income and livelihood security of the growers. Worldwide, IOFS are gaining popularity due to improved ecosystem services and improving farm productivity and livelihood security. Hence, IOFS- a circular economy-based (reuse-recycle-repair) agricultural production system can be alternatives to energy-intensive inputs based on CAPS. Hence, there is an urgent need to select suitable IOFS models with proper resource optimization for productivity maximization and better ecosystem sustainability. Undoubtedly IOFS reduces energy use from synthetic agrochemicals but food production in IOFS is highly dependent on fossil fuel energy that must be addressed urgently. Despite the enormous positive outlooks, there are several challenges in the adoption of IOFS models. The IOFS is a multiproduct-oriented production system that needs multi specialties and marketing. Capacity building and infrastructure development are also great challenges in adopting IOFS. Moreover, the development of IOFS models is highly individualistic, and location-specific production systems need proper resource optimization and characterization. Hence, the development of site-specific IOFS models to maintain food quality with productivity improvement is a genuine issue to the researchers, which needs to be addressed. Papers (original research/review/letter to the editors) spanning across the discipline related to the IOFS development in sustainable ways are encouraged for inclusion in this research topic. Papers should explicitly cover ecosystem restoration, farm productivity, and profitability and could have a specific focus on the following areas: -the IOFS models for enhancing productivity and environmental quality through an integrated management approach aiming at the maximization of use efficiencies -the management of biomass waste to restore the soil fertility, and ecosystem services the effect of integrated management practices on greenhouse gas emissions and energy use -Critical approaches for climate-smart food production systems

Book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy

Download or read book Structural Transformation of Bangladesh Economy written by Mustafa K. Mujeri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theory and global evidence on structural transformation along with stylised facts and implications using, among others, a dynamic panel model, for South Asia. The characteristics of the structural transformation process in Bangladesh bring out the relevance of a comprehensive and inclusive South Asian ‘brand’ in view of the challenges of large population size, high burden of poverty, rising inequalities and its compulsion to achieve rapid and sustained inclusive development. The analysis highlights several distinct characteristics of Bangladesh’s structural transformation including changes in value added, trade, employment, productivity, formal-informal jobs, and opportunities for low-skilled workers. The book suggests that the manufacturing sector could not create the required number of jobs and generate rapid absolute and relative productivity gains in the Bangladesh economy. Although the services sector has largely led output and employment growth, services subsectors with strong labour absorptive capacity have low average productivity. Hence, growth-enhancing structural transformation led by these subsectors is likely to be less dynamic than required for rapid employment-creating growth in the economy. The book’s analysis on COVID-19 and cyclone Amphan shows that an integrated disaster and development paradigm is needed for Bangladesh. An inclusive and health and well-being focused structural transformation presents the pathway to advance the people-centred approach to development in Bangladesh through both vulnerability reduction and investments in sustainable development that would offset both known and unknown disaster threats. The key for Bangladesh is to skillfully manage the ‘developer’s dilemma’ of achieving both structural transformation in terms of large productivity gains and inclusive growth for reducing poverty and rising inequalities. This book is relevant to students, academicians and development practitioners and others interested in contemporary development.
