Book excerpt: The challenges of the global climate crisis are heightened in large part by a pervasive uncertainty regarding how architects and de-signers can address this challenge most effectively. In a situation where action is needed, but the correct strategies remain un-known, it is essential for architects to share their experiences and knowledge as broadly as possible. They must seek out perspectives that can help them overcome these impasses. When climate change was put at the top of the international environmental agenda more than a decade ago, Scandinavian countries were ready and able to respond quickly and methodically. Today, Scandinavia is still on the forefront of sustainable development, reorienting cultural engagement and economic growth to face climate change. The experience and knowledge accumulated by architects from Denmark, Norway and Sweden have the potential to enrich the exchange of ideas that is vital to a shift towards holistic thinking and sustainable architectural practice. In this book, essential aspects of sustainability in architecture and planning are approached from many diverse perspectives. They exemplify the breadth and depth of explorations underway. The collection of writings is based on six years of visits made to the three Scandinavian countries, and sustained engagements with the schools of architecture in the capital cities of Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. The book aims to illuminate lessons being learned by architects in Scandinavia, that are also relevant in a global perspective. The main drivers of sustainability are highlighted through case studies that cover all scales from planning and infrastructure to buildings and components. The cases illustrate central themes such as energy, lifecycles, industrialization, durability, transformation, and history. More acutely architectural topics such as adaptability, integrated design, and architectural education/tradition further permeate the cases. At the same time, the projects exempli-fy the best practices of sustainable architecture in Scandinavia in-cluding housing, offices, cultural buildings, and urban development.

In the 21st century, Norway, Denmark and Sweden remain the icons of fair societies, with high economic productivity and quality of life. But they are also an enigma in a cultural-evolutionary sense: though by no means following the same socio-economic formula, they are all cases of a "non-hubristic", socially sustainable modernity that puzzles outside observers. Using Nordic welfare states as its laboratory, Sustainable Modernity combines evolutionary and socio-cultural perspectives to illuminate the mainsprings of what the authors call the "well-being society". The main contention is that the Nordic uniqueness is not merely the outcome of one particular set of historical institutional or political arrangements, or sheer historical luck; rather, the high welfare creation inherent in the Nordic model has been predicated on a long and durable tradition of social cooperation, which has interacted with global competitive forces. Hence the socially sustainable Nordic modernity should be approached as an integrated and tightly orchestrated ecosystem based on a complex interplay of cooperative and competitive strategies within and across several domains: normative-cultural, socio-political and redistributive. The key question is: Can the Nordic countries uphold the balance of competition and cooperation and reproduce their resilience in the age of globalization, cultural collisions, the digital economy, the fragmentation of the work/life division, and often intrusive EU regulation? With contributors providing insights from the humanities, the social sciences and evolutionary science, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of political science, sociology, history, institutional economics, Nordic studies and human evolution studies.

Scandinavia is famous for its design culture, and for its pioneering efforts toward a sustainable future. In Ecological by Design, Kjetil Fallan shows how these two forces came together in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Scandinavian designers began to question the endless cycle in which designed objects are produced, consumed, discarded, and replaced in quick succession. The emergence of ecological design in Scandinavia at the height of the popular environmental movement, Fallan suggests, illuminates a little-known reciprocity between environmentalism and design: not only did design play a role in the rise of modern environmentalism, but ecological thinking influenced the transformation in design culture in Scandinavia and beyond that began as the modernist faith in progress and prosperity waned. Fallan describes the efforts of Scandinavian designers to forge an environmental ethics in a commercial design culture sustained by consumption; shows, by recounting a quest for sustainability through Norwegian wood(s), that one of the main characteristics of ecological design is attention to both the local and the global; and explores the emergence of a respectful and sustainable paradigm for international development. Case studies trace key connections to continental Europe, Britain, the US, Central America, and East Africa. Also, there is a need for better due diligence, transparency and monitoring. Based on reported CO2-e intensities several shifts are suggested to be supported by policy instruments: 1. Shift from beef to other meat consumption. 2. Shift from meat to vegetables. 3. Reduce food waste. 4. Reduce air travel. 5. Shift from private cars to public transportation and soft mobility. 6. Prolong life of goods. 7. Respect human rights. 8. Reduce overall private consumption.

Especially, it deals with the local features of this change, but seen in a global context. The two cases examined - the municipalities of Linköping and Åtvidaberg - are Swedish, but the problems of how to relate locally to a globalized world are common today. The cases have been deliberately chosen to expose alternative types of choices for the local communities involved. Large Linköping is, historically, a nodal city of importance in the national grid of regional centres, one that relates to the nation state and represents officialdom. Small Åtvidaberg developed in the context of its forest region setting and metallurgy, and today operates directly to wider markets, while still emphasising its very local identity. The fact that these municipalities border each other provides a similar regional context, and differences between them may then not be entirely confused by a debate on drastically different geographical settings.
