Book What Money Can t Buy

Download or read book What Money Can t Buy written by Susan E. Mayer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children from poor families generally do a lot worse than children from affluent families. They are more likely to develop behavior problems, to score lower on standardized tests, and to become adults in need of public assistance. Susan Mayer asks whether income directly affects children's life chances, as many experts believe, or if the factors that cause parents to have low incomes also impede their children's life chances. She explores the question of causation with remarkable ingenuity. First, she compares the value of income from different sources to determine, for instance, if a dollar from welfare is as valuable as a dollar from wages. She then investigates whether parents' income after an event, such as teenage childbearing, can predict that event. If it can, this suggests that income is a proxy for unmeasured characteristics that affect both income and the event. Next she compares children living in states that pay high welfare benefits with children living in states with low benefits. Finally, she examines whether national income trends have the expected impact on children. Regardless of the research technique, the author finds that the effect of income on children's outcomes is smaller than many experts have thought. Mayer then shows that the things families purchase as their income increases, such as cars and restaurant meals, seldom help children succeed. On the other hand, many of the things that do benefit children, such as books and educational outings, cost so little that their consumption depends on taste rather than income. Money alone, Mayer concludes, does not buy either the material or the psychological well-being that children require to succeed.

Book excerpt: Are you trying to figure out how to bring in more money into your business? Do you know you've got a money block or are upper limiting-preventing yourself from going beyond what you've always done-with your ability to get higher level clients? Does it seem difficult to see how to match your bank account to your hustle? Maybe it's not in the doing at all. Perhaps it's in the way you are BEing, and how you are feeling about deserving more money. Susan's purpose with clients is to help you believe differently about money, and BE leading your money differently, because beliefs shapes reality and we only receive money to our capacity. You don't have to struggle. You don't have to remain in overwhelm. You don't even have to be afraid of, or have anxiety around, money. It can be easier. In fact, (newsflash!) that's the way it's supposed to be. Inviting in and receiving more money is meant to be easy. In this power-packed manifesto, Susan explains how she came to her signature discovery of the 7 energetic levels of money consciousness, helps you identify which level you are currently in and provides a prescription for getting you to your next level, most easily and efficiently. Look, we don't want the money. We want what money gets us or does for us, so we can be, do, and have more. Like taking better care of ourselves, our family, our community. Or giving back more. The more money we have, the better options we have, the more secure we feel, the higher confidence we have in our future, and the more fully expressed we become. In fact, in The Science of Getting Rich, Wallace D. Wattles states that desiring money for what it can get us or do for us is noble. There is no higher pursuit. You also learn the importance of leading your money with your energy, and the spiritual side of money consciousness. Everything is energy. Just by breathing you are worthy of abundant prosperity. Join Susan on this illuminating tour of just how easy it is to have whatever amount of money you desire.

Book In the Country of Women

Download or read book In the Country of Women written by Susan Straight and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of NPR's Best Books of the Year “Straight’s memoir is a lyric social history of her multiracial clan in Riverside that explores the bonds of love and survival that bind them, with a particular emphasis on the women’s stories . . . The aftereffect of all these disparate stories juxtaposed in a single epic is remarkable. Its resonance lingers for days after reading.” —San Francisco Chronicle In the Country of Women is a valuable social history and a personal narrative that reads like a love song to America and indomitable women. In inland Southern California, near the desert and the Mexican border, Susan Straight, a self–proclaimed book nerd, and Dwayne Sims, an African American basketball player, started dating in high school. After college, they married and drove to Amherst, Massachusetts, where Straight met her teacher and mentor, James Baldwin, who encouraged her to write. Once back in Riverside, at driveway barbecues and fish fries with the large, close–knit Sims family, Straight—and eventually her three daughters—heard for decades the stories of Dwayne’s female ancestors. Some women escaped violence in post–slavery Tennessee, some escaped murder in Jim Crow Mississippi, and some fled abusive men. Straight’s mother–in–law, Alberta Sims, is the descendant at the heart of this memoir. Susan’s family, too, reflects the hardship and resilience of women pushing onward—from Switzerland, Canada, and the Colorado Rockies to California. A Pakistani word, biraderi, is one Straight uses to define a complex system of kinship and clan—those who become your family. An entire community helped raise her daughters. Of her three girls, now grown and working in museums and the entertainment industry, Straight writes, “The daughters of our ancestors carry in their blood at least three continents. We are not about borders. We are about love and survival.” “Certain books give off the sense that you won’t want them to end, so splendid the writing, so lyrical the stories. Such is the case with Southern California novelist Susan Straight’s new memoir, In the Country of Women . . . Her vibrant pages are filled with people of churned–together blood culled from scattered immigrants and native peoples, indomitable women and their babies. Yet they never succumb . . . Straight gives us permission to remember what went before with passion and attachment.” ––Los Angeles Times

Book Jane Austen

Download or read book Jane Austen written by Claire Tomalin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At her death in 1817, Jane Austen left the world six of the most beloved novels written in English—but her shortsighted family destroyed the bulk of her letters; and if she kept any diaries, they did not survive her. Now acclaimed biographer Claire Tomalin, author of A Life of My Own, has filled the gaps in the record, creating a remarkably fresh and convincing portrait of the woman and the writer. While most Austen biographers have accepted the assertion of Jane's brother Henry that "My dear Sister's life was not a life of events," Tomalin shows that, on the contrary, Austen's brief life was fraught with upheaval. Tomalin provides detailed and absorbing accounts of Austen's ill-fated love for a young Irishman, her frequent travels and extended visits to London, her close friendship with a worldly cousin whose French husband met his death on the guillotine, her brothers' naval service in the Napoleonic wars and in the colonies, and thus shatters the myth of Jane Austen as a sheltered and homebound spinster whose knowledge of the world was limited to the view from a Hampshire village.
