Book From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor Lost in Transition

Download or read book From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor Lost in Transition written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report of the proceedings of a symposium held in conjunction with the release of the IOM report, From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition, represents an effort on the part of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to further disseminate the findings and recommendations of the IOM report and to take the next step toward implementation of those recommendations. The symposium and this report serve as important vehicles to raise awareness, fill gaps that have existed in cancer patients' long-term care, and chart a course for quality care for cancer survivors and their families. More than 100 stakeholders in the cancer community, including survivors, advocates, healthcare providers, government officials, insurers and payers, and researchers participated in the symposium. This report culminates a series of work at the IOM focused on cancer survivorship. The idea to embark on a major study of cancer survivorship within the National Academies originated with the National Cancer Policy Board (NCPB). The NCPB was established in 1997 in the IOM and the National Research Council's Division of Earth and Life Studies at the request of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institutes of Health, and the President's Cancer Panel. The NCPB identified emerging policy issues in the nation's effort to combat cancer, and prepared reports that address those issues, including a series of reports on topics ranging from cancer prevention to end-of-life care.

Book Treating Addicted Survivors of Trauma

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Simultaneously addressing both addiction and survivor issues, the book describes ways to identify and assess substance-dependent survivors, and organize, direct, and plan their treatment. In addition, it provides specific strategies for working with significant others, adolescents, and individuals who also exhibit antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic personality disorders. This book is aimed at psychologists, chemical dependency counselors, social workers, and family therapists.

  • ISBN : 0684867907
  • Pages : 237 pages

Download or read book Survivor written by Laura Landro and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-07-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after her thirty-seventh birthday, Wall Street Journal reporter and editor Laura Landro was told that she had chronic myelogenous leukemia. Survivor is the remarkable account of her battle against this devastating, potentially fatal cancer -- and her successful struggle to take control of her own case. At first almost paralyzed with fear when diagnosed with this form of blood cancer, Laura Landro resolved to use her journalistic training to seek out the treatment that would give her the best shot at surviving. Noting that most Americans spend more time researching what kind of car to buy than they do their health care, she shows how and why all patients can -- and must -- arm themselves with the facts, learn to understand medical jargon, get doctors to answer all their questions in layman's terms, weigh conflicting medical opinions, and make the difficult choice among the options open to them. Survivor is a moving, deeply personal account of a life-and-death experience. In it, Laura Landro tells of a fight to live that brought her to the brink of death -- and to a despair that at times made her wonder if the struggle was worth it. Her inspiring story offers all readers hope and the know-how to navigate the terrifying and bewildering world of medicine, even when they are very ill and at their most vulnerable. Laura Landro has written a book that is must reading for everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, and for everyone who has a cancer patient in the family. It will rank beside such classics as Norman Cousins's Anatomy Of an Illnes As Perceived by the Patient, Cornelius Ryan's A Private Battle, and John Gunther's Death Be Not Proud, at once a work of literature and a manifesto for every cancer patient.

Book Essentials of Cancer Survivorship

Download or read book Essentials of Cancer Survivorship written by Lidia Schapira and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing number of cancer survivors presents a new challenge to generalists and specialists involved in their care. Prior cancer treatments may compound known comorbidities or contribute to future health risks. The ultimate success of cancer treatments ultimately depends on the meticulous management of post-cancer care, and this requires a clinical workforce that is engaged and ready. Cancer survivorship has now become recognized as an independent field of research and clinical practice. This new concise guide is intended for cancer clinicians as well as generalists and specialists who meet cancer survivors in their practices for routine check-ups or specialized consultations. With an expanding population known to have complex medical, psychosocial and emotional needs, we hope this book sparks interest and provides answers for those involved in their care.

Book Health Services for Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Health Services for Cancer Survivors written by Michael Feuerstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health has been conceptualized by world and national health organizations (WHO, CDC, Healthy People 2010) as more than the absence of disease. It involves a focus on physical, psychosocial, and functional aspects of life as well as the prevention of future illnesses. At this point in the development of quality health care for cancer survivors, there is sufficient knowledge and expert opinion to push efforts forward to improve the health of cancer survivors. Clearly there is more research in the most prevalent forms of cancers (e.g., breast cancer) than others that provide us with guidance on how to optimize their health, but there are data on other forms of cancers that can also better inform practice. There may also be general care practices that can cut across cancer types. There has been an emergence of epidemiological and clinical research in cancer survivors that can form the basis for a revolution in the quality and nature of health care that survivors receive. This book not only provides the reader with diverse perspectives and data but also integrates this information so it can serve as the foundation necessary to improve and maintain the health of cancer survivors. Reporting of symptoms to health care providers is a complex, multi-determined problem influenced not only by the pathophysiology but also, as we have learned over the years through pain research, by societal, cultural, and biobehavioral factors. This book will consider this important aspect of follow-up for millions of cancer survivors because of the strong reliance on symptom reporting for clinical decision making. In order for us to generate meaningful and effective treatment, we need to better understand the symptom experience in cancer survivors. This book provides much information that will assist us to better understand and manage this complicated end point. The presenting problems need to be articulated and “conceptualized” as clearly as possible by both parties so appropriate actions can be taken. Since health care costs are a major concern for patients, payers, and providers, this area will also be addressed in all the relevant sections. In taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this book illustrates the importance of a team approach to the improvement of health care and associated health, well-being, and functioning in cancer survivors. The 17 chapters cover critical topics of which physicians and providers of all types must be aware in order to provide the most comprehensive and responsive care for cancer survivors. All of the clinical care chapters include case studies to illustrate the real-world application of these approaches in cancer survivors. Information about sources of referral both within and outside the traditional health care communities will be provided in tabular form. There is no other text that provides both an overview of the problems and their challenges, case illustrations of direct application, and the reality of reimbursement for such care. The editors hope that there may be no need for the clinician or the survivor to adapt to a “new normal” if the presenting problems are understood and handled from an interdisciplinary perspective as outlined here.

This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Survivor's Guide to Medical Cannabis is Dr. Regina Nelson's follow-up to Amazon's top-selling book, 'The eCS Therapy Companion Guide' (2015). It is an excellent patient resource and physician reference guide that has only been improved. As Nelson shares much has changed in the last three years and this excellent guide has more cannabis survivor stories. Nelson describes the endocannabinoid system (eCS) and phytocannabinoids (the cannabis sativa plant) in layman's terms. She helps readers understand the importance of medical cannabis and how it can be helpful, but she doesn't promise a cure. Instead, she describes in-depth how patients are using cannabis for nearly 100 terminal and chronic conditions; she even shares her own patient journey. Nelson has a direct but entertaining style and her science is well-referenced and on-target. She is not a medical doctor, but a social scientist and medical cannabis patient. Additionally, she is an International Educator and Researcher. 'The Survivor's Guide to Medical Cannabis' has been extended to include a short chapter on sexual health as Dr. Nelson has recently announced she will be leading a cannabis product and sexual health study. Download or read book Risky Medicine written by Robert Aronowitz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Will ever-more sensitive screening tests for cancer lead to longer, better lives? Will anticipating and trying to prevent the future complications of chronic disease lead to better health? Not always, says Robert Aronowitz. In fact, it often is hurting us... Drawing on such controversial examples as HPV vaccines, cancer screening programs, and the cancer survivorship movement, Aronowitz demonstrates that patients and their doctors have come to believe, perilously, that far too many medical interventions are worthwhile because they promise to control our fears and reduce uncertainty." -- Taken from book flyleaf.
