Book From Basic Survival Analytic Theory to a Non Standard Application

Download or read book From Basic Survival Analytic Theory to a Non Standard Application written by Georg Zimmermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georg Zimmermann provides a mathematically rigorous treatment of basic survival analytic methods. His emphasis is also placed on various questions and problems, especially with regard to life expectancy calculations arising from a particular real-life dataset on patients with epilepsy. The author shows both the step-by-step analyses of that dataset and the theory the analyses are based on. He demonstrates that one may face serious and sometimes unexpected problems, even when conducting very basic analyses. Moreover, the reader learns that a practically relevant research question may look rather simple at first sight. Nevertheless, compared to standard textbooks, a more detailed account of the theory underlying life expectancy calculations is needed in order to provide a mathematically rigorous framework.

Book Applied Multiregional Demography Through Problems

Download or read book Applied Multiregional Demography Through Problems written by Andrei Rogers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the 2018 Mindel C. Sheps Award winner, this textbook offers a unique method for teaching how to model spatial (multiregional) population dynamics through models of increasing complexity. Each chapter in this programmed workbook starts with a descriptive text, followed by a sequence of exercises focused on particular multiregional models, of increasing complexity, and then ends with the solutions. It extends the current developments in the spatial analysis of social data towards improving our understanding of dynamics and interacting change across multiple populations in space. Frameworks for analyzing such dynamics were first proposed in multiregional demography, over 40 years ago. This book revisits these methods and then illustrates how they may be used to analyze spatial data and study spatial population dynamics. Topics covered include spatial population dynamics, population projections and estimations, spatial and age structure of migration flows and much more. As such this innovative textbook is a great teaching and learning tool for teachers, students as well as individuals who want to study demographic processes across space.

Book Insect Ecology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy D. Schowalter
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2006-04-10
  • ISBN : 0123813522
  • Pages : 651 pages

Download or read book Insect Ecology written by Timothy D. Schowalter and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Insect Ecology: An Ecosystem Approach provides a modern perspective of insect ecology that integrates two approaches traditionally used to study insect ecology: evolutionary and ecosystem. This integration substantially broadens the scope of insect ecology and contributes to prediction and resolution of the effects of current environmental changes, as these affect and are affected by insects. The third edition includes an updated and expanded synthesis of feedback and interactions between insects and their environment. This updated material and a new chapter on applications of insect ecology to social and environmental issues effectively demonstrates how evolutionary and ecosystem approaches complement each other, with the intent of stimulating further integration of these approaches in experiments that address insect roles in ecosystems. Effective management of ecosystem resources depends on evaluation of the complex, often complementary, effects of insects on ecosystem conditions, as well as insect responses to changing conditions. Timely revision of a key reference on insect ecology Full coverage of ecosystem structure and function balanced with essential background on evolutionary aspects New chapter on applications to issues such as pest management, ecosystem restoration, invasive species and environmental changes Case studies highlight practical and theoretical applications for topics covered in each chapter
