Book How to Survive Prison

Download or read book How to Survive Prison written by Steven Fazekas and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on first-hand personal experiences; nevertheless it is not about guilt or innocence. It is a handbook; guidance for those Americans, who may one day have to go to prison. This is a directory to the idiosyncrasies of the American ‘Justice Industry’ and to inmates, guards, lawyers, judges, prosecutors and incarceration facilities within it. By and large the workings of this self-perpetuating ‘industry’ are little known to the general public. Here is a detailed guide for all those unfortunate Americans who one day may fall into the hands of this relentless ‘industry’. It is a known fact that the United States has the highest number of incarcerated people in the world, hence mathematically speaking any American, including you the reader could easily be part of this sad statistics. By reading about events, persons and places described in this book, you the reader will be prepared (somewhat) to face this special section of society that (so far) had been locked away from you and the American public. ***** “There are two kinds of people my friends: The one who gets caught and the one yet to be caught..... every son of a bitch out there is guilty of something, including the judge and the jury who convicted me.” A quote from Orlando – a federal inmate serving a life sentence.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to surviving incarceration in a federal prison. Federal Prison Handbook teaches individuals facing incarceration, prisoners who are already inside, and their friends and family everything they need to know to protect themselves and their rights. The thorough information has been compiled by an advocate currently serving time at a federal prison. His insider's view of this unknown world guides inmates through the mental stresses of confinement. Equally as important, he keeps readers physically safe by explaining how to avoid the near-constant conflicts found inside federal prisons. In detailed chapters broken down by topical areas, readers discover: * What to expect during admissions and how to greet cellmates for the first time. * How to communicate with the outside world through telephones, computers, and mail. * What types of items can be purchased from the official commissary and the underground economy. * The best ways to avoid fights, and the options that provide the greatest protection if a fight cannot be avoided. * The knowledge required to avoid scams, schemes, theft, and other problems. * What to do about sexual harassment or assault. * The types of jobs available and their pay grades. * Medical and psychological services. * Religious activities and services. * Entertainment, recreation, and keeping fit. * And much more. Importantly, this text provides detailed instructions on how prisoners can protect their rights. The author is a college-educated prisoner who has fought extensively to preserve his rights and the rights of other prisoners. Incarceration can be cruel for prisoners and their loved ones. Know what to expect and make the best of this time by staying safe, remaining safe, and building a life behind bars.

Book Conviviality and Survival

Download or read book Conviviality and Survival written by Sacha Darke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazilian authorities continuously fail to comply with international norms on minimal conditions of incarceration. Brazil's prison population has risen ten-fold since the country's return to democracy in the 1980s. Its prisons typically operate at double official capacity and with 100 prisoners for each guard on duty. At the same time, however, the average Brazilian prison is not as disorderly or its staff-inmate relations so conflictual as our established theories on prison life might predict. This monograph explores the means by which Brazilian prisons function in the absence of guards. More specifically, the means by which prison security and inmate discipline is negotiated between prison managers, gangs and the wider inmate body. While fragile and varied, this historical tradition of co-produced governance has for decades kept most prisons in better order and enabled most prisoners to better survive.

  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Homeward written by Bruce Western and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of mass incarceration, over 600,000 people are released from federal or state prison each year, with many returning to chaotic living environments rife with violence. In these circumstances, how do former prisoners navigate reentering society? In Homeward, sociologist Bruce Western examines the tumultuous first year after release from prison. Drawing from in-depth interviews with over one hundred individuals, he describes the lives of the formerly incarcerated and demonstrates how poverty, racial inequality, and failures of social support trap many in a cycle of vulnerability despite their efforts to rejoin society. Western and his research team conducted comprehensive interviews with men and women released from the Massachusetts state prison system who returned to neighborhoods around Boston. Western finds that for most, leaving prison is associated with acute material hardship. In the first year after prison, most respondents could not afford their own housing and relied on family support and government programs, with half living in deep poverty. Many struggled with chronic pain, mental illnesses, or addiction—the most important predictor of recidivism. Most respondents were also unemployed. Some older white men found union jobs in the construction industry through their social networks, but many others, particularly those who were black or Latino, were unable to obtain full-time work due to few social connections to good jobs, discrimination, and lack of credentials. Violence was common in their lives, and often preceded their incarceration. In contrast to the stereotype of tough criminals preying upon helpless citizens, Western shows that many former prisoners were themselves subject to lifetimes of violence and abuse and encountered more violence after leaving prison, blurring the line between victims and perpetrators. Western concludes that boosting the social integration of former prisoners is key to both ameliorating deep disadvantage and strengthening public safety. He advocates policies that increase assistance to those in their first year after prison, including guaranteed housing and health care, drug treatment, and transitional employment. By foregrounding the stories of people struggling against the odds to exit the criminal justice system, Homeward shows how overhauling the process of prisoner reentry and rethinking the foundations of justice policy could address the harms of mass incarceration.

This book will help guide the prisoner toward preparing for release from prison. To most prisoners getting out of prison is just as stressful as going to prison, especially those who have not prepared for their release from prison. One of the reasons After the Gavel was written is to help the prisoner prepare for their release and transition back into society. Be careful who gives you advice on surviving prison. There are a lot of people who write "prison survival" books who only spent six to twenty four months in some prison camp. Those people do not know enough about how to survive prison to be credible. They do not understand the prisoners, guards or the prison system itself. If you want advice you should at least get it from someone with many years of experience in several different prisons and different prison security levels. The people you will be locked up with will come from all the different prisons and security levels. Dealing with all of those people is the reasons you need good advice from someone who knows what he is talking about. When you go to prison you will have to deal with idiots, bullies, con men and people you should never trust. This book tells you how to identify and deal with the different types of prisoners and guards you will interact with everyday you're in prison. The information will show you how to avoid problems and conflicts. Not knowing how to deal with the different people can result in an immediate confrontation. Prison rules are not normal rules of society. The information in this book will guide you through or around all of these situations.By reading and following the advice in After the Gavel you will avoid all of the usual pitfalls, conflicts and embarrassing situations the inexperienced prisoner finds themselves in. The information will make your prison time less stressful. You will learn how to live as well as you can in prison. One of the most important things the advice will do, if you follow it, is to prepared you for release from prison.Just remember that whichever prison survival book you decide to buy should be written by someone who has spent many (more than 10) years in prison. Don't waste your money on the ones written by people who do not have the experience. Even if you go to a "camp" you will be dealing with other prisoners who have been moved down from prisons with much higher security levels. Not knowing how to interact with these prisoners will cause you major problems. Good luck to you.

Angelo Pisano, a ten-year veteran of the U.S. prison system, is breaking the silence with this guide on how to navigate a world behind bars. With a focus on getting home as soon as possible, Pisano prepares soon-to-be inmates for confinement, whether their sentences will be served in county jails or in maximum security prisons. The advice for so-called "new Jacks" covers all types of scenarios, from fights to the complex rules that govern borrowing and lending to the best practices at the gambling table. By teaching the newly convicted about the pecking order and how to stay out of trouble with correctional officers and inmates alike, Pisano aims to get his readers out of jail as early as the criminal justice system will allow. Instead of feeling helpless, Pisano's readers will come away from the book feeling more in control. That's because, as Pisano writes, being confined to jail doesn't mean being confined to bad choices. Instead, he provides his readers with workable advice on how to take advantage of the solitude and freedom from distraction to improve character, intellect and chances for future success. By reading this book, the newly convicted just might be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel."

Book excerpt: A stunning account of life behind bars at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, where the nation’s hardest criminals do hard time. “A page-turner, as compelling and evocative as the finest novel. The best book on prison I’ve ever read.”—Jonathan Kellerman The most dreaded facility in the prison system because of its fierce population, Leavenworth is governed by ruthless clans competing for dominance. Among the “star” players in these pages: Carl Cletus Bowles, the sexual predator with a talent for murder; Dallas Scott, a gang member who has spent almost thirty of his forty-two years behind bars; indomitable Warden Robert Matthews, who put his shoulder against his prison’s grim reality; Thomas Silverstein, a sociopath confined in “no human contact” status since 1983; “tough cop” guard Eddie Geouge, the only officer in the penitentiary with the authority to sentence an inmate to “the Hole”; and William Post, a bank robber with a criminal record going back to when he was eight years old—and known as the “Catman” for his devoted care of the cats who live inside the prison walls. Pete Earley, celebrated reporter and author of Family of Spies, all but lived for nearly two years inside the primordial world of Leavenworth, where he conducted hundreds of interviews. Out of this unique, extraordinary access comes the riveting story of what life is actually like in the oldest maximum-security prison in the country. Praise for The Hot House “Reporting at its very finest.”—Los Angeles Times “The book is a large act of courage, its subject an important one, and . . . Earley does it justice.”—The Washington Post Book World “[A] riveting, fiercely unsentimental book . . . To [Earley’s] credit, he does not romanticize the keepers or the criminals. His cool and concise prose style serves him well. . . . This is a gutsy book.”—Chicago Tribune “Harrowing . . . an exceptional work of journalism.”—Detroit Free Press “If you’re going to read any book about prison, The Hot House is the one. . . . It is the most realistic, unbuffed account of prison anywhere in print.”—Kansas City Star “A superb piece of reporting.”—Tom Clancy
