Book Surviving a Tsunami

Download or read book Surviving a Tsunami written by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains true stories that illustrate how to survive—and how not to survive—a tsunami. It is meant for people who live, work, or play along coasts that tsunamis may strike. Such coasts surround most of the Pacific Ocean but also include some coastal areas of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and Mediterranean seas. Although many people used to call tsunamis "tidal waves," they are not related to tides but are rather a series of waves, or "wave trains," usually caused by changes in the level of the sea floor during earthquakes. Tsunamis have also been caused by the eruption of coastal and island volcanoes, submarine landslides, and oceanic impacts of large meteorites. During the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that killed 227,000, tsunamis reached heights 50.6 meters (166 feet) above sea level in Sumatra, Indonesia. In the 2011 Japan Tsunami that killed 17,000, waves reached 38.9 meters (127.6 feet) above sea level and flooded kilometers inland. The stories in this book were selected from interviews with people who survived a Pacific Ocean tsunami in 1960 as well as the 2010 Chilean earthquake and tsunami. Many of these people contended with the waves near their source, along the coast of Chile. Others faced the tsunami many hours later in Hawaii and Japan. Most of the original interviews in Circular 1218 were done decades later in the 1980s and 1990s. The new accounts included in this publication (p. 7 and 8) were compiled between 2009 and 2010 (p. 3, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 19). Also new to this edition is information regarding earthquake sources that can generate tsunamis in Central America and South America, including the Caribbean (p. 4). The stories provide a mixed bag of lessons about tsunami survival. Some illustrate actions that reliably saved lives—heeding natural warnings, abandoning belongings, and going promptly to high ground and staying there until the tsunami is really over. Others describe taking refuge in buildings or trees or floating on debris—tactics that had mixed results and can be recommended only as desperate actions for people trapped on low ground.

Book Developing Tsunami Resilient Communities

Download or read book Developing Tsunami Resilient Communities written by E.N. Bernard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world grieves over the catastrophic loss of humanity from the 26 December 2004 tsunami, we must resolve to learn from nature’s lessons. This issue provides a framework and a set of tools to develop communities that are resilient to tsunami. This collection of papers represents a starting point on our new journey toward a safer world. The history of tsunami hazard mitigation tracks well with the history of destructive tsunamis in the United States. Following the 1946 Alaska g- erated tsunami that killed 173 people in Hawaii, the Paci?c Tsunami Warning Center was established in Hawaii by a predecessor agency to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Following the 1960 Chilean tsunami that killed 1,000 people in Chile, 61 in Hawaii, and 199 in Japan, the United States formed the Joint Tsunami Research E?ort (JTRE) and sta?ed the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC) in Hawaii. JTRE was formed to conduct research on tsunamis while ITIC, sponsored by the United Nations, was formed to coordinate tsunami warning e?orts of the Paci?c Countries. Many research and mitigation e?orts were focused on the distant tsunami problem. Following the 1964 Alaskan t- nami that killed 117 in Alaska, 11 in California, and 4 in Oregon, the U. S. was confronted with the local tsunami problem. In response, the U. S. established the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska. In 1992, a Ms 7.

Book Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula

Download or read book Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula written by Jacilee Wray and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine Native tribes of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula—the Hoh, Skokomish, Squaxin Island, Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, Port Gamble S’Klallam, Quinault, Quileute, and Makah—share complex histories of trade, religion, warfare, and kinship, as well as reverence for the teaching of elders. However, each indigenous nation’s relationship to the Olympic Peninsula is unique. Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula: Who We Are traces the nine tribes’ common history and each tribe’s individual story. This second edition is updated to include new developments since the volume’s initial publication—especially the removal of the Elwha River dams—thus reflecting the ever-changing environment for the Native peoples of the Olympic Peninsula. Nine essays, researched and written by members of the subject tribes, cover cultural history, contemporary affairs, heritage programs, and tourism information. Edited by anthropologist Jacilee Wray, who also provides the book’s introduction, this collection relates the Native peoples’ history in their own words and addresses each tribe’s current cultural and political issues, from the establishment of community centers to mass canoe journeys. The volume’s updated content expands its findings to new audiences. More than 70 photographs and other illustrations, many of which are new to this edition, give further insight into the unique legacy of these groups, moving beyond popular romanticized views of American Indians to portray their lived experiences. Providing a foundation for outsiders to learn about the Olympic Peninsula tribes’ unique history with one another and their land, this volume demonstrates a cross-tribal commitment to education, adaptation, and cultural preservation. Furthering these goals, this updated edition offers fresh understanding of Native peoples often seen from an outside perspective only.

We need books like this to help us understand the world in which we live.”—Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan and Fooled by Randomness Disaster can come in many forms, from earthquakes and wildfires to pandemics and acts of terror. Afterward, when the dust settles and the survivors emerge, we can’t help but wonder: Why did they live when so many others perished? In The Unthinkable, prize-winning journalist Amanda Ripley, who has covered some of the most devastating disasters of our age, sets out to find the answers. To understand the human reaction to chaos and imminent danger, she turns to leading brain scientists, trauma psychologists, and other disaster experts—from a Holocaust survivor who studies heroism to a master gunfighter who learned to overcome extreme fear. Along the way, we learn about the perils of crowd psychology, the elegance of the brain’s fear circuits, how leaders can build trust quickly, and other invisible factors that can make the difference between death and survival. A fascinating combination of neuroscience, firsthand accounts, and thrilling investigative journalism, this book is for anyone who has ever wondered how they would respond in a life-and-death situation—or wanted to increase their odds of survival. Book Disaster Resilience

Download or read book Disaster Resilience written by Douglas Paton and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2006 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will fill the gaps that hamper the effective utilization of the resilience and sustainability concepts within emergency planning: one concerns the lack of a comprehensive review of this multi-level concept; the second relates to its multi-level nature. Specifically, the text identifies a need for the systematic integration of these different levels in a manner that illustrates the holistic contribution of the resilience concept to emergency planning. By integrating these different levels in a manner that illustrates the holistic contribution of the resilience concept to emergency planning, a comprehensive working model of disaster resilience and sustainability can be developed. The text discusses the resources and strategies required at each level to facilitate resilience and how they can be integrated to develop a sustained capacity to adapt to nature (and other) hazard consequences. The nature and implications of these inter-relationships will be developed throughout the text and will lead towards the development of a comprehensive, integrated model of community resilience. A key focus of the text will thus be its articulating the inter-relationships between these levels. The importance of basing emergency planning on the holistic application of the concept will also be discussed. By representing resilience in a holistic manner, the text will also constitute a resource capable of assisting assessment of the community implications of any shortfall of resilience resources for emergency planning and for community recovery planning. The book brings together contributions from international experts in core areas. It includes chapters that provide an overarching framework within which the need for inter-relationships between levels to be developed is discussed. It also includes sections that link chapters to progressively develop a holistic multi-level model, and a chapter that describes the final comprehensive model and its implications for contemporary emergency management. It will be useful to those researching or teaching courses in emergency management, disaster management, community development, environmental planning, urban development, sociology, and applied psychology, as well as to emergency management agencies, risk management agencies, engineers and consultants, planners, emergency and law enforcement agencies, and social and welfare agencies.

  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book The End written by Marq de Villiers and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the fate of the world as we know it? Tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, pandemics, cosmic radiation, gamma bursts from space, colliding comets, and asteroids—these things used to worry us from time to time, but now they have become the background noise of our culture. Are natural calamities indeed more probable, and more frequent, than they were? Are things getting worse? Are the boundaries between natural and human-caused calamities blurring? Are we part of the problem? If so, what can we do about it? In The End, award-winning writer Marq de Villiers examines these questions at a time when there is an urgent need to understand the perils that confront us, to act in such a way as best we can for the inevitable disasters when they come. We can do nothing about some natural calamities, but about others we can do a great deal. De Villiers helps us understand which is which, and lays out some provocative ideas for mitigating the damage all such calamities can inflict on us and our world. The End is a brilliant and challenging look at what lies ahead, and at what we can do to influence our future.
