Book The Phantom Pattern Problem

Download or read book The Phantom Pattern Problem written by Gary Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattern-recognition prowess served our ancestors well, but today we are confronted by a deluge of data that is far more abstract, complicated, and difficult to interpret. The number of possible patterns that can be identified relative to the number that are genuinely useful has grown exponentially - which means that the chances that a discovered pattern is useful is rapidly approaching zero. Patterns in data are often used as evidence, but how can you tell if that evidence is worth believing? We are hard-wired to notice patterns and to think that the patterns we notice are meaningful. Streaks, clusters, and correlations are the norm, not the exception. Our challenge is to overcome our inherited inclination to think that all patterns are significant, as in this age of Big Data patterns are inevitable and usually coincidental. Through countless examples, The Phantom Pattern Problem is an engaging read that helps us avoid being duped by data, tricked into worthless investing strategies, or scared out of getting vaccinations.

Book Driving While Blind

Download or read book Driving While Blind written by Bob Hazard and published by Bob Hazard. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driving While Blind took me nearly 10 years to write, as I am not a writer by profession. I simply feel that the message needs to be available to our young drivers. I started this when two of my daughter's High School classmates were killed in a crash. That incident made me think that we, as adults and parents, need to do a better job of teaching our kids how to drive. Driving While Blind is a quick, easy and informative read that I tried to write with a bit of levity...based on my own personal experiences as a road warrior. I have driven somewhere near, or just over a million miles and I've done that completely crash free! I have also been in the automotive industry for most of my adult life, this has given me the opportunity to be trained by professional SCCA drivers on several occasions. What makes me qualified to write this book? Nothing...and everything. Hopefully, by writing this book, I will ultimately save lives....if I save just one, well then, I have been a complete success! Happy & Safe Motoring!

Book Science God and the Nature of Reality

Download or read book Science God and the Nature of Reality written by Sarah S. Knox and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This philosophy of science book is written by a biomedical scientist for a lay audience but is well-referenced for use by scientific readers and college course curricula. Its thesis is that the current paradigm in the biological and medical sciences, which is responsible for rejecting the existence of a Divine Being, is outdated. There is no factual basis for creating a dichotomy between evolution and Divine Design. Misconceptions about the nature of reality, i.e., the belief that matter is the ultimate cause of everything we think, feel, say, and do, have made it easy to ignore data demonstrating an important biological role for the energetic aspects of matter and to leave the question of the existence of a Divine being to the purview of philosophy and religion. The author uses extensive scientific data to highlight the inconsistencies in current theories and relates her personal journey in trying to explain her observations with purely mechanistic theories. Her ultimate conclusion is that the existence or non-existence of God can no longer be ignored by scientists. It is one of the most important scientific questions there is and like many other issues that were formally relegated to the domain of philosophy, can and should be investigated by modern science.

Book THE NEW THEORY OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Download or read book THE NEW THEORY OF CONSCIOUSNESS written by DELANIN FADAHUNSY and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new theory by observation and deduction, identifies that consciousness originated from nothing(zero; at the origin of living cells) and progressed in a gradual continuum through plant (vegetative) to reptiles to mammals to humans, illuminating how organisms attained those different levels, including the 'Permanent Access Memory (PAM) Hypothesis' in gaining self-consciousness. This theory discusses that mammals can only sleep at the level of reptilian consciousness (the sleep-wake consciousness) as the mammalian and human consciousness levels are sharp, focused cognitive states at which sleep is impossible. Rapid Eye Movement Behavioural Disorder (RBD) is the first safety net preventing mammals, at sleep, from falling through the consciousness-continuum into coma (vegetate consciousness) or death, and sleepwalking is the last vital safety net, if and when RBD fails; because even though a necessity for sleep, the reptilian consciousness is unsafe for mammals, due to the danger of sleeping through the Consciousness - Continuum to coma. It has now revealed, quite unexpectedly, the fact that in the state of consciousness referred to as sleepwalking, any act of aggression is impossible. Key word: Consciousness-Continuum. Updates, additions, discussions or contributions are available and welcome on www.delaninfadahunsysconsciousness.co.uk
