Book The Wood Duck and the Mandarin

Download or read book The Wood Duck and the Mandarin written by Lawton L. Shurtleff and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-11-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of conservation told through the natural histories of two of the world's most fascinating birds, the Wood Duck of North America and the Mandarin of Asia. The only two species in their genus (Aix), these Northern Wood Ducks are native to different continents but have long been kept together in captivity. Now, for the first time in history, they are also flying side by side in the wild in a small area of northern California. This rare circumstance has given Lawton L. Shurtleff and Christopher Savage the opportunity to observe the Northern Wood Ducks' close relationship and is the starting point of this informative and beautifully rendered book. The opening chapters tell how the Wood Duck and the Mandarin came to inhabit the Pacific Flyway and explain their extraordinary similarities. Subsequent chapters discuss the distinctive histories of the two species and describe the birds throughout the seasons in their native flyways. The Mandarins' place in Asian art and literature is the subject of Chapter Five. The final chapter illuminates the successful work done to protect the North American Wood Duck, which has made a remarkable recovery from near extinction, and the beginning efforts to protect the Mandarin, whose existence in East Asia is seriously threatened. Stunning full-color photographs by renowned wildlife photographers, along with photographs by the authors, capture the exquisite beauty of these much revered birds. Detailed maps show the Wood Ducks' territory in North America and the Mandarins' territory in East Asia and Great Britain. Three appendices--plans for building nestboxes, instructions for banding birds, and lists of books and conservation organizations--and a thorough index are valuable resources in a book that will delight bird-lovers and general readers alike.

Book The North American Perching and Dabbling Ducks

Download or read book The North American Perching and Dabbling Ducks written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-03 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the fourth in a series of books that collectively update and expand P.A. Johnsgard's 1975 The Waterfowl of North America, summarizes research findings on this economically and ecologically important group of waterfowl. The volume includes the mostly tropical perching duck tribe Cairinini, of which two species, the muscovy duck and the wood duck, are representatives. Both species are adapted for foraging on the water surface, mostly on plant materials, but typically perch in trees and nest in elevated tree cavities or other elevated recesses. This volume also includes the dabbling, or surface-feeding, duck tribe Anatini, a large assemblage of duck species that mainly forage on the water surface but nest on the ground, or only very rarely in elevated locations. Of this tribe, 12 species that regularly breed in North America are included, among them such familiar species as mallards, wigeons, pintails, and teal. Descriptive accounts of the distributions, populations, ecologies, social-sexual behaviors, and breeding biology of all these species are provided, together with distribution maps. Five additional Eurasian and West Indian species have been reported several times in North America; these have been included with more abbreviated accounts, but all 17 species are illustrated by drawings, photographs, or both. The text includes about 84,000 words and contains more than 1,000 references. There are also 12 distribution maps, 21 drawings, 28 photographic plates, and 58 anatomical or behavioral sketches.

Book Nest Productivity Brood Survival and Habitat Use of Wood Ducks A i x S p o n s a at the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area Kentucky

Download or read book Nest Productivity Brood Survival and Habitat Use of Wood Ducks A i x S p o n s a at the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area Kentucky written by Mark Patrick Vrtiska and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other researchers have suggested increased harvest and hunting opportunities for wood ducks may be possible in the southern states prior to fall migration because an increased harvest of locally produced birds would have little impact on migrant populations. Therefore, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved a three-year, experimental early duck season for Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida. The season has continued in Kentucky, but there was concern that the increased harvest may be affecting local populations due to the increased number of adult females being taken. Currently, the wood duck is the number one duck harvested in Kentucky, and most of that harvest occurs in the September early season. A study was conducted at the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area, located in Henderson and Union Counties, Kentucky to determine nest productivity, brood survival, natural cavity density and use, and brood habitat use.
