Book Road to Industrialized Africa Role of Efficient Factor Market in Firm Growth

Download or read book Road to Industrialized Africa Role of Efficient Factor Market in Firm Growth written by Manabu Nose and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of rapid growth, industrialization has lost ground with shrinking manufacturing sector and high informality in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper explores how land market and labor regulations affect factor allocative efficiency and firm performance in SSA. Using pooled data on firm balance sheets for 40 countries in SSA, the results identify significant land and labor misallocations due to limited market allocation of land and inappropriate regulatory policies. Using variations in ethnic diversity and the intensity of regulatory actions to peer firms at subnational level as instrumental variables, local average treatment effects show large productivity gains from factor reallocations, especially for marginally productive firms. Panel data results for Nigerian firms confirm factor market inefficiency as a principal driver of declining productivity, while showing that the 2011 minimum wage reform increased firm size. The results imply that improving formal regulation is critical to support firm growth at the stage of weak legal capacity, while informal sector monitoring gets effective as legal capacity develops.

Book Research Anthology on Small Business Strategies for Success and Survival

Download or read book Research Anthology on Small Business Strategies for Success and Survival written by Management Association, Information Resources and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 1496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running a small business provides opportunity for greater success, increased growth, and potentially the chance to move to the global business arena, yet also much more risk. Small businesses not only have less employment, but also less annual revenue than a regular-sized business. With the growth of large corporations and chain businesses, it has become harder to maintain the survival of a small business. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought more pressure onto the already unsteady survival of small businesses, due to forced closures, decreased agility, fewer technological innovations, and smaller customer bases. The Research Anthology on Small Business Strategies for Success and Survival offers current strategies for small businesses that can be utilized in order to maintain equal footing during challenging times. With the proper strategies available to small business owners, small businesses could not only survive, but also excel despite the environment that surrounds them. Covering topics including decision management, new supportive technologies, sustainable development, and micro-financing, this text is ideal for small business owners, entrepreneurs, startup companies, family-owned and operated businesses, restaurateurs, local retailers, managers, executives, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book Entrepreneurship Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Entrepreneurship Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and the Macroeconomy written by Zoltan J. Acs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published in 1999. At this time, the US economy had recently restructured itself, moving away from an industrial economy towards one based on information, while the European Union and Japan were left to worry about rising government deficits, inflexible businesses, persistent unemployment, and workers inadequately trained for the information age. Why did the US economy move beyond its chief competitors? This collection suggests that at least some of the answers to the pattern of divergent development can be found in the role of the entrepreneur. By examining the process that entrepreneurs play in the economy, the essays in this volume make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of the macroeconomy. Each chapter clarifies the role of entrepreneur in economic theory, the function of small and medium-size enterprises that they found and build and the impact of the innovations introduced on employment, productivity, and economic growth.

Book Struggle and Survival on Wall Street

Download or read book Struggle and Survival on Wall Street written by John O. Matthews and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-03-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. securities firms are the most competitive in the world and are now facing challenges posed by the internationalization of securities markets. Struggle and Survival on Wall Street provides a comprehensive economic analysis of competition among securities firms. John Matthews analyzes the interaction of the industry's structure, conduct and performance. To meet the competition and the needs of their customers, he argues, firms develop new financial products, some of which become new lines of business. The most important decisions firms make concern the methods of entry into these lines of business. Those firms that successfully innovate and adapt their organizations are in the best position to deal with both domestic and international competition. The regulatory framework of the industry is vital to its growth and Matthews makes policy recommendations which urge regulators, particularly the Securities and Exchange Commission, to provide for a framework in which organizational change can take place.

Book Innovation in the U S Service Sector

Download or read book Innovation in the U S Service Sector written by Michael P. Gallaher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a cutting-edge structure, where a current description of the service sector and up-to-date case studies are compared and contrasted with innovative activity in manufacturing, this book contributes towards a better theoretical understanding of innovation in the U.S. service sector. The U.S. service sector is the largest sector in the U.S. economy and accounts for an increasingly significant share of U.S. gross domestic product, currently 68 percent. Both in the United States, as well as in other industrialized nations, the service sector is a dynamic component of economic activity and growth. As pervasive and economically important as the service sector is, innovative activity in service-sector firms remains somewhat of an enigma; it is not well understood and not well defined because it differs dramatically from the traditional model of innovation in manufacturing. Innovation in the U.S. Service Sector fills this void, placing emphasis on the United States, but with global relevance. It is essential reading for all students of business and management, economics and political science.

This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research-based spin-off companies are a special subgroup of new technology-based ventures and play an important role for innovation and economic development. Executive teams of academic spin-offs face several challenges in building up sustainable and profitable ventures, because they often lack managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Based on a quantitative analysis of 193 German spin-offs RigoTietz examines the relationships between executive team characteristics, strategic decision making, and firm performance. The study contributes to the entrepreneurship and strategic management literature and has practical implications for entrepreneurs and managers, policymakers and practitioners of start-up initiatives and technology transfer organisations.
