Book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors with the Elements of Geodesy

Download or read book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors with the Elements of Geodesy written by and published by . This book was released on 1883 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors 1883

Download or read book A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors 1883 written by J. R. Oliver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Practical Astronomy for Surveyors, 1883: With the Elements of Geodesy This manual has been drawn up for the use of the Cadets of the Royal Military College of Canada. The first five chapters on Practical Astronomy embrace that portion of the subject with which all Land Surveyors this country ought to be familiar. The remaining chapters, together with the part of the work which treats of Geodesy, touch on the more important parts of the additional course, as regards those subjects, laid down by Government for candidates for the degree of Dominion Topographical Surveyor. It has become absolutely necessary to draw up some compilation of this kind, because, while many of the Cadets are anxious to qualify themselves as far as possible in the above-mentioned course, the number of different books they would have had to refer to in order to obtain the requisite knowledge would have entailed on them a heavy expense. In order to make the work as cheap as possible the number of diagrams has been cut down to a minimum, it being intended to supply the place of expensive plates of instruments et cetera by lecture illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables and Formulae Useful in Surveying, Geodesy, and Practical Astronomy, Including Elements for the Projection of Maps: Instructions for Field Magnetic Observations General: In preparing this third edition of a volume compiled in 1849 for the use of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, when an officer in that corps, I have made such additions and corrections as experience has suggested and the requirements of the service seemed to demand. Intended more especially for field-use by officers engaged in surveys or explorations, and aspiring to no further merit than that of accuracy, utility, and convenience, it is submitted with the hope that it may continue to be favorably received by those who may have occasion to refer to it. The revision was undertaken at the suggestion of others, and not without reluctance. I beg indulgence for its defects. Book Statistics Data Mining and Machine Learning in Astronomy

Download or read book Statistics Data Mining and Machine Learning in Astronomy written by Željko Ivezić and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-12 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As telescopes, detectors, and computers grow ever more powerful, the volume of data at the disposal of astronomers and astrophysicists will enter the petabyte domain, providing accurate measurements for billions of celestial objects. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the cutting-edge statistical methods needed to efficiently analyze complex data sets from astronomical surveys such as the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, the Dark Energy Survey, and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. It serves as a practical handbook for graduate students and advanced undergraduates in physics and astronomy, and as an indispensable reference for researchers. Statistics, Data Mining, and Machine Learning in Astronomy presents a wealth of practical analysis problems, evaluates techniques for solving them, and explains how to use various approaches for different types and sizes of data sets. For all applications described in the book, Python code and example data sets are provided. The supporting data sets have been carefully selected from contemporary astronomical surveys (for example, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey) and are easy to download and use. The accompanying Python code is publicly available, well documented, and follows uniform coding standards. Together, the data sets and code enable readers to reproduce all the figures and examples, evaluate the methods, and adapt them to their own fields of interest. Describes the most useful statistical and data-mining methods for extracting knowledge from huge and complex astronomical data sets Features real-world data sets from contemporary astronomical surveys Uses a freely available Python codebase throughout Ideal for students and working astronomers
