Book Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

Download or read book Afghan Refugees in Pakistan written by Hanne Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the second part of a report on the conditions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan after the emergency relief phase. Its goal is to find answers to four questions concerning the refugee situation in the two sample frontier villages of Barawal and Orakzai: a) where do refugees obtain their food and income; b) what social and economic links do they have with the community; c) does the provision of free food and relief deter refugees from engaging in productive economic activities; and d) what are the best ways of identifying and assisting vulnerable groups? The report is divided into seven sections: Introduction; The Refugee Intake and Food Distribution Experience; The Refugee Communities; Refugee Interaction with Local People; Summary Findings; Conclusions; and Photographic Documentation. The following recommendations conclude the report: 1) refugee-initiated income-generating projects which are appropriate to Pakistan's development policies should receive international and local support; 2) newly-arrived refugees should be given a hundred per cent relief while aid to those settled for more than two years should be phased out by gradual monthly reductions; 3) careful monitoring of the phasing out process must ensure that, at each step, refugee income is adequate; and 4) refugees should be well-informed about reasons for, and the modalities of, the phasing out with a trial period at the outset.

Book Settlements of Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

Download or read book Settlements of Afghan Refugees in Pakistan written by Mahammad Najim Azadzoi and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the physical design of urban public housing projects. To meet the objectives stated in the preface, the following issues were addressed: The social hierarchy of the community; the administration of the settlement; the maintenance and operation of the settlements; and finally the users' control and responsibility over the land. This thesis is a study of the settlements of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. It mainly focuses on the conditions and problems of the physical environment in the refugee camps. Although its primary objective is to identify and evaluate settlement issues in the physical context, an attempt is made to highlight related social, political, and economic factors affecting the situation. The study is based on data, information, and documents collected by the author through research work carried out in the refugee camps in Pakistan in the summer of 1983. This included visits to five different refugee locations in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, and five weeks of field work in the Nadir Bath refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan. This work represents a study of the general refugee situation in Pakistan in order to provide a comprehensive view of the overall circumstances, since the study of a particular refugee location may not demonstrate a clear picture of the whole situation. This study comprises two main parts: a) A description and evaluation of the existing situation of the refugee settlements, the relief work, and the processes involved in particular sectoral activities, b) the identification of major problems. Background information materials are included in each section and in the appendix. The study is intended to provide documents/guidelines for reference and information for those involved in present and future refugee situations.

Book excerpt: Pakistan's Afghan Policy after the Russia's intervention in 1979 left indefinable impact on Pakistan's society at large. But Peshawar was the worst- hit city during Afghan resistance against Russia even after that, during Taliban insurgence. Pakistan's Afghan refugee policy brought drastic changes in society, culture and economy of the city of Peshawar. Peshawar was the front line city to Afghan borders which absorbed the major influx of refugees from Afghanistan. After thirty years since the Afghan refugees settled in the city, the demography of Peshawar has been profoundly altered. This study focuses the socio-economic impact of Afghan refugees in the city of Peshawar. The study is based on primary and secondary data. Primary data are generated through community dialogue and through questionnaire. For this study, Peshawar city is divided according to demographic concentration of both communities, that is, Afghan refugees and local residents. The study reveals a stiff competition between the two communities and the culture of the city had experienced a sea-change. Family values, pattern of social interaction, gender behavior and demography had profoundly affected by the arrival of refugees. The study finally concludes that after three decades, two communities are at entanglement rather than at compromise.

Book Socio economic Surveys of Male Afghan Refugees in the Refugee Villages of NWFP Final Report

Download or read book Socio economic Surveys of Male Afghan Refugees in the Refugee Villages of NWFP Final Report written by J. Morton and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a questionnaire-based survey carried out by male Afghan interviewers on 1241 households in refugee villages in NWFP during 1991. Background information is given on the geographic/ethnic origin of the refugees, on the year they left Afghanistan and on their previous occupations. The results confirmed that these refugees are almost all farmers. This is of crucial importance to their survival strategies in a situation where they cannot buy land and this is one reason for their concentration on unskilled labour. The survey found that although 95 per cent of the refugees intended ultimately to return home, only three per cent had plans to use the encashment scheme. The major difficulties refugees expected with repatriation were the cost of transport, the danger of mines, and the need to restore agricultural production and housing. The demography of the refugee population is described, with tables of the distribution of household size, mean household size with respect to camp, status of household head (able-bodied female, able-bodied male, etc.) and presence of able-bodied males in households. The educational status of the refugee population is examined and refugee-Pakistani relations explored. An investigation is made into registration and the actual receipt of rations. Tables of median household expenditure on foodstuffs and non-food items are included, although the author expresses doubts about their accuracy. Living conditions are expressed in terms of the distribution of rooms (or tents) per households, as well as statistics on the proportion of households living in brick houses, mud houses, and tents. The percentage of households reporting assets such as sewing machines, bicycles, etc. is given as well as the livestock holdings of the refugee population. The author provides an occupational profile for men over 16 years of age, concluding that the camp-resident Afghan population is overwhelmingly dependent on unskilled manual labour. This is mainly casual labour and the distribution of days of work per month for different age groups indicates underemployment. The question of labour migration is treated. Income is described in terms of wage rates and individual incomes, household income and per capita income. The report concludes with an appendix on the methodology of the survey and possible sources of inaccuracy.

Book Pakistan Coercion UN Complicity

Download or read book Pakistan Coercion UN Complicity written by Gerald Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The report, "Pakistan Coercion, UN Complicity: The Mass Forced Return of Afghan Refugees," documents Pakistan's abuses and the role of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in promoting the exodus. Through enhancing its "voluntary repatriation" program and failing to publicly call for an end to coercive practices, the UN agency has become complicit in Pakistan's mass refugee abuse. The UN and international donors should press Pakistan to end the abuses, protect the remaining 1.1 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and allow refugees among the other estimated 750,000 unregistered Afghans there to seek protection, Human Rights Watch said"--Publisher's description.

Book The Economic Impact of Conflicts and the Refugee Crisis in the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Conflicts and the Refugee Crisis in the Middle East and North Africa written by Mr.Bjoern Rother and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) has experienced more frequent and severe conflicts than in any other region of the world, exacting a devastating human toll. The region now faces unprecedented challenges, including the emergence of violent non-state actors, significant destruction, and a refugee crisis bigger than any since World War II. This paper raises awareness of the economic costs of conflicts on the countries directly involved and on their neighbors. It argues that appropriate macroeconomic policies can help mitigate the impact of conflicts in the short term, and that fostering higher and more inclusive growth can help address some of the root causes of conflicts over the long term. The paper also highlights the crucial role of external partners, including the IMF, in helping MENA countries tackle these challenges.

Book Refugees Self Reliance Development

Download or read book Refugees Self Reliance Development written by Easton-Calabria, Evan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evan Easton-Calabria’s critical history of refugee self-reliance assistance brings new dimensions to refugee and international development studies. The promotion of refugee self-reliance is evident today, yet its history remains largely unexplored, with good practices and longstanding issues often missed. Through archival and contemporary evidence, this book documents a century of little-known efforts to foster refugee self-reliance, including the economic, political, and social motives driving this assistance. With five case studies from Greece, Tanzania, Pakistan, Uganda, and Egypt, the book tracks refugee self-reliance as a malleable concept used to pursue ulterior interests. It reshapes understandings of refugee self-reliance and delivers important messages for contemporary policy making.

Book The Mobility of Displaced Syrians

Download or read book The Mobility of Displaced Syrians written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Syria, now in its eighth year, continues to take its toll on the Syrian people. More than half of the population of Syria remains displaced; 5.6 million persons are registered as refugees outside of the country and another 6.2 million are displaced within Syria's borders. The internally displaced persons include 2 million school-age children; of these, less than half attend school. Another 739,000 Syrian children are out of school in the five neighborhood countries that host Syria's refugees. The loss of human capital is staggering, and it will create permanent hardships for generations of Syrians going forward. Despite the tragic prospects for renewed fighting in certain parts of the country, an overall reduction in armed conflict is possible going forward. However, international experience shows that the absence of fighting is rarely a singular trigger for the return of displaced people. Numerous other factors—including improved security and socioeconomic conditions in origin states, access to property and assets, the availability of key services, and restitution in home areas—play important roles in shaping the scale and composition of the returns. Overall, refugees have their own calculus of return that considers all of these factors and assesses available options. The Mobility of Displaced Syrians: An Economic and Social Analysis sheds light on the 'mobility calculus' of Syrian refugees. While dismissing any policies that imply wrongful practices involving forced repatriation, the study analyzes factors that may be considered by refugees in their own decisions to relocate. It provides a conceptual framework, supported by data and analysis, to facilitate an impartial conversation about refugees and their mobility choices. It also explores the diversified policy toolkit that the international community has available—and the most effective ways in which the toolkit can be adapted—to maximize the well-being of refugees, host countries, and the people in Syria.
