Book Breast Cancer Survivorship and Quality of Life

Download or read book Breast Cancer Survivorship and Quality of Life written by Jessica D. Fodrocy and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Breast cancer affects thousands of women annually and the number of breast cancer survivors continues to rise. Most treatments for breast cancer are necessary to reach a cure but may be associated with adverse late and long-term effects that may impact a survivor's quality of life. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between the types of breast cancer treatments received and a survivor's reported quality of life. The study population included 55 women ages 18 years and above diagnosed with early-stage, curable breast cancer that completed at least treatment for their cancer. Afaf Meileis' middle-range Transition Theory was the nursing theoretical framework for this study. The research design was non-experimental, quantitative, and retrospective. A descriptive correlational design was used to describe relationships among variables. The Quality of Life in Adult Cancer Survivors (QLACS) survey with demographic and treatment questions was mailed to eligible participants. Likert-scale responses and study variables were recorded and analyzed. Participants had the worst quality of life scores in the areas of dealing with stress, fear of recurrence, fatigue, and aches and pains. Differences in quality of life scores were noted between patients who received and those how had not received the most common breast cancer treatment options. Statistically significant relationships were noted between the study variables and quality of life scores. These research results provide a practitioner educating a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient new knowledge about the differences in quality of life by receiving or not receiving common breast cancer treatments." -- From page v.

Book Young breast cancer survivors

Download or read book Young breast cancer survivors written by Florence K L Tangka and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic burden of breast cancer for women under 50 in the United States remains largely unexplored, in part because young women make up a small proportion of breast cancer cases overall. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a web-based survey to compare data from breast cancer survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis and 40–49 years of age at first diagnosis. We administered a survey to a national convenience sample of 416 women who were 18–49 years of age at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis. We analyzed factors associated with financial decline using multivariate regression.Survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis were more likely to report Stage II–IV breast cancer (P < 0.01). They also quit their jobs more often (14.6%) than older survivors (4.4%; P < 0.01) and faced more job performance issues (55.7% and 42.8%, respectively; P = 0.02). For respondents in both groups, financial decline was more likely if the survivor had at least one comorbid condition (odds ratios: 2.36–3.21) or was diagnosed at Stage II–IV breast cancer (odds ratios: 2.04–3.51).

Book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient

Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book Breast Cancer Survivors and Quality of Life

Download or read book Breast Cancer Survivors and Quality of Life written by Mohammed Nofal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality of life is a common concept in the health status and health promotion literature. Improving quality of life is the most important outcome of health services. Hence, the World Health Organization raised the notion: "Adding years to life" is an empty victory without "adding life to years." No previous texts were published to ameliorate the quality of life for breast cancer survivors in Palestine. Therefore, this book comes to fill the gap in literature about the burden of breast cancer and its effect on quality of life of breast cancer survivors in Palestine. This book is divided into six chapters. Chapter one presented previous studies and reports about the global, regional and national burden of breast cancer. Chapter two analyzed the concepts and the themes of quality of life in general. Chapter three presented an extensive literature review of breast cancer and quality of life. Chapter four presented the empirical study conducted in Gaza strip to evaluate the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. Chapter five presented the results and discussion of the findings. Finally, chapter six showed the conclusion and the recommendations.

Book Trajectories and Predictors of Health related Quality of Life in Older Breast Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Trajectories and Predictors of Health related Quality of Life in Older Breast Cancer Survivors written by Sushantti Rupesh and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research study is to explore trajectories of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older breast cancer survivors, along with their predictors. HRQoL is important because patients who show severe symptoms may wish to consider therapies or treatment plans that lead to better HRQoL. Older people are more vulnerable to low HRQoL scores since old age is associated with deteriorating health, multiple comorbidities, and low-socioeconomic status. To examine the HRQoL trajectory among older women with breast cancer, we used the data queried from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Medicare Health Outcomes Survey database. A total of 1,089 older ([greater than or equal to] 65 years) women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998-2012 and participated in the survey before and after the cancer diagnosis were identified. HRQoL was measured using SF-36/VR-12 questionnaire and summarized as Physical Component Summary (PCS) Score and Mental Component Summary (MCS) Score. Latent Class Growth Mixture Modeling was conducted to identify distinct groups of women with a similar trajectory of HRQoL. The results showed that there were three latent classes of HRQoL trajectories for PCS: the high-declining (46.5% of the sample), mid-declining (36.0%), and the low-improving (17.5%). Two latent classes of HRQoL trajectories were identified for MCS: high-stable (76.5%) and low-declining (23.5%). The results showed that age at diagnosis, BMI, level of education, geographic region, tumor grade, tumor size, and number of comorbidities were some of the major predictors of health-related quality of life. These predictors were further explored using multinomial logistic regression analysis which identified number of comorbidities as the most significant predictor for HRQoL-PCS scores and level of education as the most significant predictor for HRQoL-MCS scores. This suggests that future research needs to be conducted, identifying the most common comorbidities in older breast cancer survivors to develop interventions that better the physical HRQoL in patients, in addition to the development of mental HRQoL interventions for patients that are less educated.

Book Factors Affecting Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Factors Affecting Quality Of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors written by Afza Rasul and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment of Quality of Life for the survivors of chronic diseases is considered an important outcome for understating their well-beings and for implementation of best treatment options. Such assessments are usually taken by a number of items covering all dimensions of Quality of life relative to the disease. Generally the responses of collected items are at ordinal categorical scale representing Quality of Life or well-beings of survivors in ordinal fashion. These ordinal items, when combined, to get summary score, usually results non-normal data distribution. Ordinal regression models are appropriate in these situations. In this study, proportional odd models with logit link function were used to model the ordinal response variables with explanatory variable(s). The main objective of the study was to assess the well-beings (physical, social, psychological and spirituals) and Quality of Life of the females' breast cancer survivors and to determine the factors effecting well-beings (physical, social, psychological and spirituals) and Quality of Life of Pakistani breast cancer survivors females.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores in depth the relation between physical activity and cancer control, including primary prevention, coping with treatments, recovery after treatments, long-term survivorship, secondary prevention, and survival. The first part of the book presents the most recent research on the impact of physical activity in preventing a range of cancers. In the second part, the association between physical activity and cancer survivorship is addressed. The effects of physical activity on supportive care endpoints (e.g., quality of life, fatigue, physical functioning) and disease endpoints (e.g., biomarkers, recurrence, survival) are carefully analyzed. In addition, the determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors are discussed, and behavior change strategies for increasing physical activity in cancer survivors are appraised. The final part of the book is devoted to special topics, including the relation of physical activity to pediatric cancer survivorship and to palliative cancer care.

Book Improving Outcomes for Breast Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Improving Outcomes for Breast Cancer Survivors written by Patricia A. Ganz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In collaboration with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), this timely volume provides a comprehensive review on all areas of breast cancer survivorship research, highlighting research that is underway or in development. The range of topics covered include the biology and management of fatigue and cognitive dysfunction on breast cancer survivorship, the biology and management of Neuropathy and Arthralgias, the ongoing research on the biology of diet and lifestyle interventions in survivors, and more. With the tremendous growth in the number of breast cancer survivors, researchers have moved beyond describing the outcomes of breast cancer treatments and are focusing their research on understanding the mechanisms underlying the development of the late effects of breast cancer treatment, as well as the development and evaluation of interventions to mitigate some of the persistent symptoms—topics which are also explored in this volume. In addition, current research on how to improve survivorship and reduce recurrence of breast cancer through behavioral and lifestyle modifications is also discussed.
