Book Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids and Fire Resistance Test Methods Used by the Air Force

Download or read book Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids and Fire Resistance Test Methods Used by the Air Force written by CE. Snyder and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern about the fire resistance of hydraulic fluids by the Air Force and the rest of the Department of Defense (DoD) dates back to the introduction of the mineral oil based hydraulic fluid, MIL-H-5606 [1], into aircraft hydraulic systems. This concern has led to the development of two fire resistant hydraulic fluids that can be directly substituted into aircraft hydraulic systems that were designed to use MIL-H-5606, i.e., MIL-H-83282 [2] and MIL-H-87257 [3], and a nonflammable hydraulic fluid, MTL-H-53119 [4], that can be used only in hydraulic systems that were designed for that fluid or in subsystems originally designed for MIL-H-5606, MIL-H-83282 or MIL-H-87257, for which re-design of the components and retrofit of the system with compatible seals, if required, would be cost effective. Another fire resistant hydraulic fluid was developed for use in commercial aircraft hydraulic systems, a phosphate ester based hydraulic fluid described by Society of Automotive Engineers document AS1241, Fire Resistant Phosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluid for Aircraft The fire resistant properties of these fire resistant and nonflammable hydraulic fluids are discussed and the flammability test methods are presented.

Book Testing and Evaluation of Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids Using the Stabilized Heat Release Spray Test

Download or read book Testing and Evaluation of Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids Using the Stabilized Heat Release Spray Test written by K. Holke and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic fluids for use in coal mining applications must be fire-resistant. Fire-resistance is defined by the particular standardized testing methods being used. In Europe, the required fire-resistance testing procedures are specified in 7th Edition of The Luxembourg Report [1]. In this report, there are three acceptable spray testing procedures; 1.) the Community of Six spray test, 2.) the United Kingdom spray test and 3.) the "stabilized heat release spray test" (Buxton Test). Of these three tests, the Buxton Test offers the greatest and most reliable quantitative characterization of the fire-resistance properties of a hydraulic fluid. The results of investigations conducted to evaluate the experimental reproducibility of the Buxton Test are discussed in this report.

Book Evaluation of Candidate Fire resistant Hydraulic Fluids

Download or read book Evaluation of Candidate Fire resistant Hydraulic Fluids written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this program were to characterize thirteen candidate hydraulic fluids for flammability, miscibility, elastomer compatibility and steel-on-steel wear, to determine the feasibility of directly substituting a less flammable fluid for the MIL-H-5606 fluid currently used in most military aircraft. Evaluation in a pump test loop has been performed on MIL-H-5606B and on two of the candidate fluids. No completely nonflammable fluid is compatible with MIL-H-5606 fluid or Buna N elastomers. Three of the thirteen fluids are recommended for further consideration: Oronite 8515, Esso 3158, and Dow Corning XF-1-0302. Oronite 8515 shows some improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and would not require operational temperature limitations if used as a replacement fluid. Reduced lubricity of highly loaded hydraulic system components (as compared to MIL-H-5606 fluid) is indicated however, by the performance of Oronite 8515 in a pump test loop. Some improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and Oronite 8515 is shown by Esso 3158. The greater viscosity and higher pour point of the latter fluid would impose some operational temperature limitations on MIL-H-5606 fluid hydraulic systems. Dow Corning XF-1-0302 fluid shows marked improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and is compatible with Buna N elastomers. Pump testing of this fluid is recommended to provide complete evaluation data. (Author).

Book Anhydrous Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids Using Polyalkylene Glycols

Download or read book Anhydrous Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids Using Polyalkylene Glycols written by Andrew Larson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In industries such as steel- and aluminum-processing mining and aviation, fire-resistant fluids are often an important consideration in choosing a hydraulic fluid. Water-based hydraulic fluids are often an excellent choice when fire resistance performance is the key selection criteria. However hydraulic pump reliability can sometimes be a challenge, especially when equipment is operating under high temperatures and pressures. Anhydrous hydraulic fluids are an alternative choice for more severe operating conditions. Fire-resistant phosphate esters are known to offer good fire resistance, but concerns about stability, toxicity, and cost has led to innovation in the development of other anhydrous fire-resistant products using synthetic esters, vegetable oils, and polyalkylene glycols (PAG). A comparison of the performance of non-phosphorus-based anhydrous hydraulic fluids including a synthetic ester, two conventional PAGs, and a new technology based on an oil-soluble PAG (OSP) has been undertaken. In high-temperature oxidation studies, PAGs and an OSP exhibited superior oxidation resistance compared to a synthetic oleate ester. All fluids exhibited excellent hydraulic vane pump wear performance but the ester showed high viscosity deterioration. An unusual feature of the OSP fluid was its superior air release properties. This may have practical benefits for hydraulic systems that use smaller reservoirs where cycle times are short. An examination of their fire-resistance properties using a manifold test showed the ester fluid to have higher ignition temperatures but lower ignitability factors than the PAGs and OSP fluids in the stabilized flame heat release spray method. Conventional PAGs have been used as fire-resistant fluids for over 20 years. Initial fire-resistance testing suggests that the new OSP technology has similar performance and provides performance advantages such as better low-temperature properties, faster air release, improved oxidation stability, and compatibility with hydrocarbon fluids.
