Book Impact Assessment of Stem Initiatives in Improving Educational Outcomes

Download or read book Impact Assessment of Stem Initiatives in Improving Educational Outcomes written by Pallavi Amitava Banerjee and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impact assessment of STEM initiatives in improving educational outcomes explores research evidence and labour market reports to show why successive governments think STEM education matters. It maps the policy background and the STEM crisis in the UK which led to the launch of the STEM informal education sector. These schemes funded by the government, educational charities and private organisations have now mushroomed at the local and national level. In the midst of so many activities for various age groups do we know what works or works better for specific group of students? Does one size fit all? The book provides a detailed report of a longitudinal national evaluation conducted in the UK by making use of official datasets. The activities evaluated here have not had a major influence on educational outcomes such as improved standardized national test results or increased STEM subject choices. The robust evaluation protocol described in this well-structured and thoughtful text will help schools to decide what works best for the students activity providers to evaluate long term outcomes for the activities they run researchers to replicate the protocol for similar activities in other settings Masters and PhD students understand how evidence from research can be used to inform policy and practice The results and implications combined with the recommendations made here will interest all those who are directly involved in the delivery of these enrichment and enhancement activities, practitioners using evidence, policy makers, the research community and schools wanting to run their own evaluations.

Book Towards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountability

Download or read book Towards Coherence Between Classroom Assessment and Accountability written by National Society for the Study of Education and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In analyses of the role of national educational assessment, insufficient attention has been paid to the central place of the classroom. Rather than encouraging a two-way flow of information, today's "standards-based" frameworks tend to direct the flow of accountability from the outside into the classroom. The authors of this volume emphasize that assessment, as it exists in schools today, consists mainly of the measurements that teachers themselves design, evaluate, and act upon every day. Improving the usefulness of assessment in schools primarily requires assisting and harnessing this flood of assessment information, both as a means of learning within the classroom and as the source of crucial information flowing out of classrooms. This volume aims to encourage debate and reflection among educational researchers, professionals, and policymakers. Five source chapters describe successful classroom assessment models developed in partnership with teachers, while additional commentaries give a range of perspectives on the issues of classroom assessment, standardized testing, and accountability.

Book What Is the Influence of the National Science Education Standards

Download or read book What Is the Influence of the National Science Education Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-11-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, with support from National Science Foundation, the National Research Council began a review of the evidence concerning whether or not the National Science Education Standards have had an impact on the science education enterprise to date, and if so, what that impact has been. This publication represents the second phase of a three-phase effort by the National Research Council to answer that broad and very important question. Phase I began in 1999 and was completed in 2001, with publication of Investigating the Influence of Standards: A Framework for Research in Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education (National Research Council, 2002). That report provided organizing principles for the design, conduct, and interpretation of research regarding the influence of national standards. The Framework developed in Phase I was used to structure the current review of research that is reported here. Phase II began in mid-2001, involved a thorough search and review of the research literature on the influence of the NSES, and concludes with this publication, which summarizes the proceedings of a workshop conducted on May 10, 2002, in Washington, DC. Phase III will provide input, collected in 2002, from science educators, administrators at all levels, and other practitioners and policy makers regarding their views of the NSES, the ways and extent to which the NSES are influencing their work and the systems that support science education, and what next steps are needed.
