Book Survey of Semiconductor Physics Electronic Transport in Semiconductors

Download or read book Survey of Semiconductor Physics Electronic Transport in Semiconductors written by Karl W. Böer and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2002-04-05 with total page 1224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of semiconductor physics and materials science. The first edition of the Survey of Semiconductor Physics set the standard for the multifaceted exploration of semiconductor physics. Now, Dr. Karl B?er, one of the world's leading experts in solid-state physics, with assistance from a team of the fields top researchers, expands this coverage in the Second Edition. Completely updated and substantially expanded, the Survey of Semiconductor Physics, Second Edition covers the basic elements in the entire field of semiconductor physics, emphasizing the materials and surface science involved. The Second Edition uses similar theoretical approaches and analyses for the basic material classes: crystalline, amorphous, quantum structures, and organics. The first volume provides thorough coverage of the structure of semiconductors, including: Phonons Energy bands Photons as they interact with the semiconductor and other particles Defects Generation and recombination Kinetics Part I of the Volume 2 begins with a thorough treatment of the carrier transport in homogeneous semiconductors, creating the context for the studies of inhomogeneous semiconductors that consume the majority of the text. The editors' primary concerns are the effects and implications of surfaces, interfaces, inhomogeneous doping, and space charges upon the electronic transport. Part II provides a general overview of the types of abrupt material inhomogeneities that are produced by interfaces and surfaces. Part III presents a detailed mathematical analysis of the interrelation between space charges, fields, and carrier transport, applying these calculations to a wide array of specific examples. Returning to his stated emphasis on practical application, B?er then focuses on the material preparations that are essential to produce semiconductor devices in Part IV and examines two specific examples of semiconductors-solar cells and light-emitting diodes-in Part V. In both volumes, extensive appendices simplify searches for important formulae and tables. An elaborate word index and reference listings allow readers to use the reference in multiple ways to discover expanding literature; to explore similarities and connecting principles in other fields; to find out how others in adjacent fields came up with intriguing solutions to similar problems; and to obtain a broad overview of the entire field of semiconductor physics.

Book Theory of Electron Transport in Semiconductors

Download or read book Theory of Electron Transport in Semiconductors written by Carlo Jacoboni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-05 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originated out of a desire to provide students with an instrument which might lead them from knowledge of elementary classical and quantum physics to moderntheoreticaltechniques for the analysisof electrontransport in semiconductors. The book is basically a textbook for students of physics, material science, and electronics. Rather than a monograph on detailed advanced research in a speci?c area, it intends to introduce the reader to the fascinating ?eld of electron dynamics in semiconductors, a ?eld that, through its applications to electronics, greatly contributed to the transformationof all our lives in the second half of the twentieth century, and continues to provide surprises and new challenges. The ?eld is so extensive that it has been necessary to leave aside many subjects, while others could be dealt with only in terms of their basic principles. The book is divided into ?ve major parts. Part I moves from a survey of the fundamentals of classical and quantum physics to a brief review of basic semiconductor physics. Its purpose is to establish a common platform of language and symbols, and to make the entire treatment, as far as pos- ble, self-contained. Parts II and III, respectively, develop transport theory in bulk semiconductors in semiclassical and quantum frames. Part IV is devoted to semiconductor structures, including devices and mesoscopic coherent s- tems. Finally, Part V develops the basic theoretical tools of transport theory within the modern nonequilibrium Green-function formulation, starting from an introduction to second-quantization formalism.

Book Advanced Physics of Electron Transport in Semiconductors and Nanostructures

Download or read book Advanced Physics of Electron Transport in Semiconductors and Nanostructures written by Massimo V. Fischetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is aimed at second-year graduate students in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Materials Science. It presents a rigorous introduction to electronic transport in solids, especially at the nanometer scale.Understanding electronic transport in solids requires some basic knowledge of Hamiltonian Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Condensed Matter Theory, and Statistical Mechanics. Hence, this book discusses those sub-topics which are required to deal with electronic transport in a single, self-contained course. This will be useful for students who intend to work in academia or the nano/ micro-electronics industry.Further topics covered include: the theory of energy bands in crystals, of second quantization and elementary excitations in solids, of the dielectric properties of semiconductors with an emphasis on dielectric screening and coupled interfacial modes, of electron scattering with phonons, plasmons, electrons and photons, of the derivation of transport equations in semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures somewhat at the quantum level, but mainly at the semi-classical level. The text presents examples relevant to current research, thus not only about Si, but also about III-V compound semiconductors, nanowires, graphene and graphene nanoribbons. In particular, the text gives major emphasis to plane-wave methods applied to the electronic structure of solids, both DFT and empirical pseudopotentials, always paying attention to their effects on electronic transport and its numerical treatment. The core of the text is electronic transport, with ample discussions of the transport equations derived both in the quantum picture (the Liouville-von Neumann equation) and semi-classically (the Boltzmann transport equation, BTE). An advanced chapter, Chapter 18, is strictly related to the ‘tricky’ transition from the time-reversible Liouville-von Neumann equation to the time-irreversible Green’s functions, to the density-matrix formalism and, classically, to the Boltzmann transport equation. Finally, several methods for solving the BTE are also reviewed, including the method of moments, iterative methods, direct matrix inversion, Cellular Automata and Monte Carlo. Four appendices complete the text.

Book Survey of Semiconductor Physics

Download or read book Survey of Semiconductor Physics written by Karl W. Böer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-05-31 with total page 1478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any book that covers a large variety of subjects and is written by one author lacks by necessity the depth provided by an expert in his or her own field of specialization. This book is no exception. It has been written with the encouragement of my students and colleagues, who felt that an extensive card file I had accumulated over the years of teaching solid state and semiconductor physics would be helpful to more than just a few of us. This file updated from time l to time, contained lecture notes and other entries that were useful in my research and permitted me to give to my students a broader spectrum of information than is available in typical textbooks. When assembling this material into a book, I divided the topics into material dealing with the homogeneous semiconductor, the sub ject of this book, and the inhomogeneous semiconductor, the latter material left for a future volume. ':In ordelt to keep the book to a manageable size, sections of tutorial character had to be interwoven with others written in shorter, reference style. The pointers at the right-hand page header will assist in discriminating the more diffi cult reference parts of the book from the more easy-to-read basic educational sections. For reference purposes, I included more tables and figures than are necessary for a text, and have added several footnotes that will be helpful in reminding the reader of facts which are often difficult to locate.

Book Physics of Nonlinear Transport in Semiconductors

Download or read book Physics of Nonlinear Transport in Semiconductors written by David K. Ferry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of high field transport in semiconductors has been of interest since the early studies of dielectric breakdown in various materials. It really emerged as a sub-discipline of semiconductor physics in the early 1960's, following the discovery of substantial deviations from Ohm's law at high electric fields. Since that time, it has become a major area of importance in solid state electronics as semiconductor devices have operated at higher frequencies and higher powers. It has become apparent since the Modena Conference on Hot Electrons in 1973, that the area of hot electrons has ex tended weIl beyond the concept of semi-classical electrons (or holes) in homogeneous semiconductor materials. This was exemplified by the broad range of papers presented at the International Conference on Hot Electrons in Semiconductors, held in Denton, Texas, in 1977. Hot electron physics has progressed from a limited phenomeno logical science to a full-fledged experimental and precision theo retical science. The conceptual base and subsequent applications have been widened and underpinned by the development of ab initio nonlinear quantum transport theory which complements and identifies the limitations of the traditional semi-classical Boltzmann-Bloch picture. Such diverse areas as large polarons, pico-second laser excitation, quantum magneto-transport, sub-three dimensional systems, and of course device dynamics all have been shown to be strongly interactive with more classical hot electron pictures.

Book Physics of Semiconductor Devices

Download or read book Physics of Semiconductor Devices written by Massimo Rudan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the basic physics of semiconductors, including the hierarchy of transport models, and connects the theory with the functioning of actual semiconductor devices. Details are worked out carefully and derived from the basic physical concepts, while keeping the internal coherence of the analysis and explaining the different levels of approximation. Coverage includes the main steps used in the fabrication process of integrated circuits: diffusion, thermal oxidation, epitaxy, and ion implantation. Examples are based on silicon due to its industrial importance. Several chapters are included that provide the reader with the quantum-mechanical concepts necessary for understanding the transport properties of crystals. The behavior of crystals incorporating a position-dependent impurity distribution is described, and the different hierarchical transport models for semiconductor devices are derived (from the Boltzmann transport equation to the hydrodynamic and drift-diffusion models). The transport models are then applied to a detailed description of the main semiconductor-device architectures (bipolar, MOS, CMOS), including a number of solid-state sensors. The final chapters are devoted to the measuring methods for semiconductor-device parameters, and to a brief illustration of the scaling rules and numerical methods applied to the design of semiconductor devices.

Book Electronic Transport in Mesoscopic Systems

Download or read book Electronic Transport in Mesoscopic Systems written by Supriyo Datta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in semiconductor technology have made possible the fabrication of structures whose dimensions are much smaller than the mean free path of an electron. This book gives a thorough account of the theory of electronic transport in such mesoscopic systems. After an initial chapter covering fundamental concepts, the transmission function formalism is presented, and used to describe three key topics in mesoscopic physics: the quantum Hall effect; localisation; and double-barrier tunnelling. Other sections include a discussion of optical analogies to mesoscopic phenomena, and the book concludes with a description of the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism and its relation to the transmission formalism. Complete with problems and solutions, the book will be of great interest to graduate students of mesoscopic physics and nanoelectronic device engineering, as well as to established researchers in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the ?rst edition ofBasic Semiconductor Physics was published in 2001, there were already many books, review papers and scienti?c journals de- ing with various aspects of semiconductor physics. Since many of them were dealing with special aspects of newly observed phenomena or with very f- damental physics, it was very di?cult to understand the advanced physics of semiconductors without the detailed knowledge of semiconductor physics. For this purpose the author published the ?rst edition for the readers who are involved with semiconductor research and development. Basic Semiconductor Physics deals with details of energy band structures, e?ective mass eq- tion and k·p perturbation, and then describes very important phenomena in semiconductors such as optical, transport, magnetoresistance, and quantum phenomena. Some of my friends wrote to me that the textbook is not only basic but advanced, and that the title of the book does not re?ect the c- tents. However, I am still convinced that the title is appropriate, because the advanced physics of semiconductor may be understood with the knowledge of the fundamental physics. In addition new and advanced phenomena - served in semiconductors at an early time are becoming well-known and thus classi?ed in basic physics. After the publication of the ?rst edition, many typographical errors have been pointed out and the corrected version was published in 2006. The p- lisher and my friends persuade me to revise the book adding new chapters, keeping the subject at the appropriate level.
