This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Mexican Vegetable and Melon Production Imports of fresh vegetables and melons from Mexico supply a significant part of us. Supplies for the winter months, in 1965 amounting to a value of about $50 million. A major part of these Mexican exports are in tomatoes, which accounted for about 60 percent of the total value in 1965. The $29-million value of tomato imports from Mexico in 1965 equalled that of the us. Winter crop, produced mostly in Florida. However, some of the Mexican tomatoes imported compete instead with the early part of the us. Spring crop, which in 1965 was valued at $45 million. The author has made periodic surveys of the Mexican winter vegetable industry since 1956 - the last one in February 1966. It is on the basis of that survey that this study, superseding fas-m - 3, published June 1964, is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Survey of Mexican Winter Vegetable Production Classic Reprint

Download or read book Survey of Mexican Winter Vegetable Production Classic Reprint written by Alvis Clinton Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of Mexican Winter Vegetable Production Production costs are low despite the fact that such hazards as frosts, insects, and plant diseases tend to keep the average yields per acre of exportable quality at low levels and that market prices in the United States and Canada are so low at times that a portion of the crop is abandoned. As for marketing costs from harvest to delivery in a United States terminal market, they are high and offset the low production costs. Growers and shippers usually stop shipping for export when United States and Canadian prices will not return marketing costs. However, losses are usually encountered before a grower will disband his harvesting and packing crews. In view of the high marketing costs, these losses can be extensive when there is a sharp break in prices. In prior years, practically all of the vegetables in these areas were grown for export to the United States and Canada. The demand in Mexican markets, however, has increased sharply in the last few years. A large portion of the lower quality vegetables not suitable for export is now sold there. This will tend to increase returns per acre and lower the production, harvest, and grading costs, which have previously been borne by the export shipments. Processing outlets are available on the West Coast, but are un profitable on the crops grown for airport. Book Mexico s Production of Horticultural Products for Export Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mexico s Production of Horticultural Products for Export Classic Reprint written by William J. Higgins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico's Production of Horticultural Products for Export In the Bajio strawberries have been and will continue to be the most important horticultural crop grown and processed although growers, as well as processors, are taking more and more interest in diversifying production. The hub of Mexico's canning industry, this area is becoming an important center for freezing vegetables for export. Shipments of fresh vegetables from this area can also be expected to increase. Changes in the horticultural industry on the West Coast have not been so pronounced as those in the Bajio. However, the significance of this vegetable and melon-producing area has not diminished, and the value of its exports exceeds that of exports from any other area. Growing Operations are concentrated primarily in the State of Sinaloa although they extend somewhat into neighboring Sonora. Production - especially of tomatoes - in the Culiacan Valley continues to expand, not so much because of increasing acreage as from bigger yields. Farmers in Apatzingan, south of the Bajio, produce primarily cantaloupes, watermelons, onions, and cucumbers. The latter are produced chiefly for pickling, while the melons and onions are shipped fresh. In the future this area is expected to decline in importance as an exporter of horticultural products. Yucatan, although not an important exporting area at the present time, has attracted attention as a potential one. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplant, among other vegetables, are being gown successfully, but lack of financing and efficient transportation keeps the industry from taking any great strides. Download or read book Local Food Systems Concepts Impacts and Issues written by Steve Martinez and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

Book excerpt: The creator of the popular Chicano Eats blog and winner of the Saveur Best New Voice People’s Choice Award takes us on a delicious tour through the diverse flavors and foods of Chicano cuisine—Mexican food with an immigrant sensibility that weaves seamlessly between Mexican and American genres and cultures. Esteban Castillo grew up in Santa Ana, California, where more than three-quarters of the population is Latino. Because Mexican food was the foundation of his childhood, he was surprised to see recipes for dishes on popular food blogs that were anything but the traditional meals he grew up eating. He was inspired to create the blog, Chicano Eats, to showcase his love for design, cooking, and culture and provide a space for authentic Latino voices, recipes, and stories to be heard. Building on his blog, Chicano Eats is a bicultural cookbook that includes 85 traditional and fusion Mexican recipes as gorgeous to look at as they are sublime to eat. Chicano cuisine is Mexican food made by Chicanos (Mexican Americans) that has been shaped by the communities in the U.S. where they grew up. It is Mexican food that bisects borders and uses a group of traditional ingredients—chiles, beans, tortillas, corn, and tomatillos—and techniques while boldly incorporating many exciting new twists, local ingredients, and influences from other cultures and regions in the United States. Chicano Eats is packed with easy, flavorful recipes such as: Chicken con Chochoyotes (Chicken and Corn Masa Dumplings) Mac and Queso Fundido Birria (Beef Stew with a Guajillo Chile Broth) Toasted Coconut Horchata Chorizo-Spiced Squash Tacos Champurrado Chocolate Birthday Cake (Inspired by the Mexican drink made with milk and chocolate and thickened with corn masa) Cherry Lime Chia Agua Fresca Accompanied by more than 100 bright, modern photographs, Chicano Eats is a melting pot of delicious and nostalgic recipes, a literal blending of cultures through food that offer a taste of home for Latinos and introduces familiar flavors and ingredients in a completely different and original way for Americans of all ethnic heritages.
