Book excerpt: This study looks at how American college students at 4-year colleges are using reference services, with an emphasis on remote use. The report has highly detailed data pinpointing who emails librarians, who uses virtual reference services, who contacts reference librarians via phone, or text, or in-person, or through forms on the library website. The study gives specific and unique data about users of each of these ways of contacting reference librarians. In addition, the study looks at student comfort level in approaching reference librarians, enabling the study's end user to identify students with a high discomfort level. Also, the report looks at overall comfort levels in approaching librarians online.Just a few of this 124-page report's many findings are that: Nearly 29% of all students sampled had asked for help from a reference librarian though an email. Students studying healthcare-related professions and those studying criminal justice were much more likely than those studying other disciplines to contact a librarian by phone. Students at high tuition colleges were much more likely than those at lower tuition colleges to have asked a librarian a question in person in the library. About 14% of students sampled found it to some degree difficult to contact a librarian online.Data in the report is broken out by more than 20 personal and institutional variables, so, for example, readers can get specific data on the percentage or English majors vs History majors who have ever asked a reference librarian a question or the percentage of men vs women who have used the college or university virtual reference service.Breakouts include age, year of school standing, major or intended major, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income level, SAT/ACT scores, college grades, regional origins, race/ethnicity, level of school tuition, size of school of institution attended and many other variables. This is a critical resource for policy makers in academic libraries as well as a unique data source for social scientists and other studying higher education.

Book excerpt: This 88-page study presents data from a representative survey of 1,765 full time college students at 4-year colleges in the United States about their use of personal study rooms provided by academic libraries for individual students. The report presents highly detailed data on student awareness of the availability of such rooms, their incidence and frequency of use, and their evaluation of the importance of and quality of the rooms provided. Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables. Just a few of the study's many findings are: ?Students who grew up outside of the USA were somewhat less likely than others to be aware of the availability of this service?46.34% of students studying biology, physics, chemistry and other hard sciences have used a personal study room in the academic library.?First year students used the personal study rooms more often than students in other years of class standing.?Students at larger colleges valued personal study rooms more than did those from smaller colleges.

The report gives detailed data on who uses information literacy tutorials provided by the academic library or those from other sources, and how many they use. Also, the study presents student library patron satisfaction data with library-furnished tutorials, as well as open ended information on which tutorials students appreciate the most and what they feel they need but cannot find. Just a few of this 123-page report's many findings are that: ?34.62% of students raised outside of the USA had used a library-furnished information literacy tutorial.?Use was far higher among those in certificate or non-degree programs than those in four year degree programs.?The tendency to ask a librarian for direct help rather than watch or listen to a tutorial peaked among students aged 22. Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables.

This report tells its readers how many and which college students consider themselves successful on campus at making friends, how successful they feel that they have been, and how successful they feel that their peers are in making friends on campus. The case study examined the existing status of digital reference services (DRS) in four selected public academic libraries in Malaysia. The study is important to determine how academic librarians are exploiting the latest information and communication technologies to improve reference service operations. Recommendations are made on the need for the implementation of synchronous DRS, enhancing the role of DRS, marketing and promotion, staff training, user education programmes and cooperation. The main contribution of this book is the assessment of effectiveness of DRS in academic libraries in Malaysia, the identification of perceived needs, issues and problems and suggestions on the areas of improvement in the use of DRS. In the process, a conceptual model for the effectiveness of the implementation of DRS in academic libraries in Malaysia is presented. The author also proposes directions for future research in the area of DRS.
