Book excerpt: This 183-pages study presents detailed data from a representative sample of 1289 full time college students at four year colleges in the USA, about their interest in a broad range of business education topics. The study presents detailed data sets for interest in each of the following, with specific data for each field or degree: MBA programs, general undergraduate business courses, human resources, international business, management, economics and quantitative analysis, business information technology, finance and accounting, and advertising and market research. Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: which students are most interested in coursework and degrees in particular fields of business study? How interested are these students? How many plan to take undergraduate courses or apply for graduate degrees or MBA's? Which demographic variables define students interested in human resources vs those interested in accounting and finance, for example?Just a few of this report's many findings are that:6.75% of all students interviewed thought it highly likely that they would apply to an MBA program.Men were more than two and a half time likelier than women to plan to apply to an MBA program.More than 17% of students majoring in communications, media or journalism were interested in taking business courses on the undergraduate level.Students of African American and Asian American ancestry showed a much higher level of interest than Caucasian or Hispanic students in studying international business.Interest in studying human resources increased significantly with each year of class standing and many more seniors than first year students were interested in this area of business.

Book The Relevance of Executive MBA Programs

Download or read book The Relevance of Executive MBA Programs written by Janis W. Dietz and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1997-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment in executive education has grown steadily since its inception during the last century. Several studies have attempted to measure the effectiveness of executive programs; prior research has indicated that some programs lack relevance. This study addressed the topic from the perspective of corporations, whose future executive education decisions are affected by the relevance of current programs, and program alumni. In a partial replication of a 1959 Harvard study, which queried graduates of 39 residential programs, I surveyed the 1993-1995 executive MBA graduates of four schools: UCLA, University of Colorado, University of Utah, and University of Washington. The main research question was: Are executive education programs meeting the needs of their mid-career students ? In addition to the above, the changing workplace prompted the following queries: Is there a difference between the satisfaction of the students with the programs in 1959 and now? Are the programs affected by lack of security in the workplace. Are people using the EMBA to change employers? Do sponsoring companies use the skills learned? Do women have a problem with the 'glass ceiling'? In addition to collecting the surveys, I interviewed the four program directors, 10 corporate executives whose responsibilities include executive education, and 24 of the 157 alumni who returned the questionnaire. Frequency distribution, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the survey data. The major findings were: EMBA students today are satisfied with the relevance of their education; Students are dissatisfied with schools that employ professors with outdated or inadequate teaching skills; Instability in today's workplace is prompting some people to change jobs or go into their own business once their EMBA is completed; Corporations will continue to invest in these programs, but there is more specific succession planning in conjunction with the career path expected for the employee; There continues to be little ethnic diversity in the programs.
