The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: What percentage of college students are married? What percentage are in a serious relationship? What percentage are in a casual or exploratory relationship? What percentage are not seeking romance at the current time? What percentage are not in a romantic relationship at the moment? The report also presents data on how easy or difficult students feel it is to find a romantic partner on campus, and whether or not their college experience met their expectations in this sphere of life.Students also comment on how aggressive or not they find their peers in their search for romantic partners and whether they would like them to be more or less assertive in this quest. Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables. Just a few of this 96-page report's many findings are that: ?Close to 40% of those from rural areas were either married or in a serious relationship versus only a little more than 28% of those who grew up in cities with more than 350,000 people.?Approximately 18.65% of students found it easy or very easy to find a romantic partner on campus.?More than 20% of straight students but only about 10.6% of gay students found it easy or very easy to find a romantic partner on campus.?First year students and sophomores were more likely than juniors or seniors to believe that a romantic relationship would hurt their academic performance.

In addition, the study presents student assessment's of their overall experience, of the likelihood that they will graduate from their current college, and the likelihood that they would recommend their college to a friend. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: 25.65% of respondents were "very satisfied" with their college or universityOlder students were particularly dissatisfied with the state of public safety on campus.Students studying journalism and communications were the least satisfied with their internships.64.59% of students sampled felt that that they were sure that they would graduate from the college that they currently attended.67% of female students but only 59.5% of male students were satisfied or very satisfied with financial aid packages available on campus.African American students were the most satisfied with campus housing; Asian Americans, the least satisfied. In general, these studies have examined students informal interactions as well as settings that often promote interpersonal engagement (e.g., living on campus, participation in co-curricular activities). However, few researchers have evaluated students campus friendships or whether those friendships predict academic outcomes like GPA or graduation. It appears that gender may play an important role in shaping the quality and quantity of the friendships among college students and other adults. Therefore, this study explored the relationships between campus friendships, gender, and student success outcomes (i.e., achievement and graduation). Therefore, this study explored the relationships between campus friendships, gender, and student success outcomes (i.e., achievement and graduation). First, the emotional connection between participants and their campus friends were evaluated to determine potential gender differences. Men reported lower overall levels of emotional connection with their campus friends than did women. Men also reported higher levels of emotional connection with their female campus friends than they did with their male friends, whereas no such differences were found for female students friends. These patterns persisted even within hierarchical linear modeling analyses that controlled for a variety of demographics, psychological attributes, and other college experiences. Moreover, emotional connection with campus friends had a positive relationship with a students likelihood to graduate in four years and in six years, but it was unrelated to cumulative college GPA. Students who reported having at least one campus friend had higher levels of mean emotional connection with campus friends, higher cumulative GPAs, and a higher likelihood of graduating in four and years than those who had no close campus friends. Having a greater proportion of campus friends also had a positive relationship with GPA, four-year graduation, and six-year graduation. These findings have implications for college activities and programming that improves the likelihood of making campus friendships. The apparent benefits of close campus friendships warrants further focus in student affairs dialogue and practice. In addition, exposing college men to more opportunities to enhance the likelihood of their making friendships with college women may lead to better outcomes (via increased levels of emotional connection with those female friends).

Engaging in regular physical activity has also been associated with a reduced risk of many neurological and psychiatric disorders, notably dementia, major depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. However, firstly, it is still unclear what kind of physical activity, exercise, and sports conducted on how long a timescale brings maximal benefits to a specific outcome for a specific population. Secondly, how findings reported so far can be incorporated into daily practice by the general public and in educational, neurological, and psychiatric contexts remain unaddressed. Thirdly, the underlying psychological, physiological, and neurobiological mechanisms through which physical activity, exercise, and sports promote cognitive and affective wellbeing remain to be clarified. Several potential mechanisms have been proposed, including the activation of the prefrontal cortices and the dopamine and serotonin neurotransmission, the release of neurotrophins, the enhancement of neural plasticity and neurogenesis, and the decrease of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among college age student's experiences in close friendship, emotional autonomy and reasons to live. This study was grounded in Attachment Theory and College Student Development. A sample of undergraduate students was drawn from one Southeastern U.S. university. A total of 441 participants completed an online survey, including the Experiences in Close Relationships - Revised scale, Emotional Autonomy subscale, College Students Reasons to Live Inventory and a five-item demographic questionnaire. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson correlations, stepwise multiple regression analysis, and multiple analysis of covariance. Results indicated a significant negative association between attachment anxiety and reasons to live implying that students that are more confident in a friends' responsiveness within a close friendship reported more reasons to live. Results also indicated a significant negative association between attachment avoidance and reasons to live implying that students that are more comfortable being close to a friend within a close friendship reported more reasons to live. Results further indicated that gender and ethnicity influence specific reasons to live, such as responsibilities to friends and family, moral obligations, college and future related concerns and fear of suicide. Findings suggest that attachment avoidance and dependence on parents, as well as gender are predictors of reasons to live. Results of the study are presented, limitations are addressed, and the implications with regard to theory, counseling practice, research and future directions are discussed.

Mathews illuminates how organizations manipulate campus sex ratios to foster hookup culture, broker romantic relationships, transfer intimacy to straight same-sex friends, and create fictive family units that hoard social and economic opportunity for their members. In their idealized form, sororities and fraternities function as familial surrogates that tether their members together in economically and socially productive ways. In their most warped manifestations, however, these fictive familial bonds reinforce insularity, entrench privilege, and—at times—threaten physical safety.
