Book excerpt: This study presents specific data from 1,076 American college students from 4-year colleges about their pandemic experience with distance learning, flipped learning, blended learning, as well as independent study with an instructor, independent study through self-paced web or video programs. The report has detailed data for their use of each of these approaches. In addition, students relate the extent to which they want distance learning and related approaches to be a part of their post-pandemic education experience. In response to an open ended question, they discuss what they most liked and disliked about their distance learning experience during the pandemic.Just a few of this 141-page report's many findings are that:?Students studying history as a major were the least likely to have taken a distance learning class in the pandemic period.?Students with a full time job were also much less likely than other students to have taken a blended learning class; fewer than 40% had done so.?26.19% of students from families of origin earning more than $250,000 per year had taken an independent study course overseen by an instructor during the pandemic.Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables.

Book excerpt: This report presents more than 100 tables of data exploring how full time college students in the United States view distance learning, how many such courses that they have taken and plan to take, and how they view their level of preparedness for DL courses. The report also presents data on how students view DL courses compared to traditional courses and how many study in colleges that offer DL courses. The data in the report is based on a representative sample of more than 400 full time college students in the United States. Data is broken out by 16 criteria including gender, grade point average, major field of study, income level of students and type, size of college, and mean SAT acceptance score of colleges, among other variables. The report is designed to give college administrators, educational researchers and others benchmarks on student use of distance learning and the student demographics of DL use and future use.

Book excerpt: The blended learning experience may offer the opportunity for post-secondary graphic design teachers to mix the best features of onsite and online education to create a new learning environment for their students. Because no formal studies to date specifically address the best practices for teaching graphic design software, the intent of this paper is to produce recommendations for a proven learning method that can be replicated to teach graphic design software classes. Analysis of the available literature produced the following findings: online and onsite classes are more successful and better received by students when class content is available in multiple formats and accessible at any time. For onsite classes, the method referred to as a flipped classroom offers the best of E-learning and classroom-based learning models. The study used the quantitative methods of cohort grade comparison, in-depth interviews, participant observation, and survey tools to evaluate the students’ perception of the flipped classroom method that was applied to an Adobe Acrobat software course in Spring of 2018. Results of this study demonstrated students preferred the flipped classroom experience, confirming that by providing the opportunity to view the content before class was superior to the other classes in which content was not available before class. Students feel more prepared when participating in a flipped classroom, because they are provided with lesson materials before an in-person class.
