Book excerpt: The Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE)-3 radar test bedat the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center was installed and evaluated in 1980. Resulting from these tests, it was noted that additional information was required prior to the issuance of the procurement specification. Specifically, the three objectives were: (1) an investigation of anomalous elongation of target returns from F-106 aircraft; (2) to determine if there is an improvement in system performance when oversized waveguide is installed in lieu of standard Ku band waveguide; and (3) a comparison of linear vertical, linear horizontal, and right hand circular antenna feed polarizations with respect to clear weather target imaging performance. This report documents the evaluation conducted and the results of this evaluation. The results indicated that: (1) the target elongation is generated by intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier saturation; (2) oversize waveguide improves system performance and should be utilized for long radiofrequency (RF) runs; and (3) linear polarization improves clear weather target imaging and should be provided to the controller as an option. Book excerpt: A flight demonstration was conducted to address airport surface movement area capacity and safety issues by providing pilots with enhanced situational awareness information. The demonstration presented an integration of several technologies to government and industry representatives. These technologies consisted of an electronic moving map display in the cockpit, a Differential Global Positioning system (DGPS) receiver, a high speed very high frequency (VH) data link, an Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE-3) radar, and the Airport Movement Area Safety System (AMASS). Aircraft identification was presented to an air traffic controller on an AMASS display. The onboard electronic map included the display of taxi routes, hold instructions, and clearances, which were sent to the aircraft via data link by the controller. The map also displayed the positions of other traffic and warning information, which were sent to the aircraft automatically from the ASDE-3/AMASS system. This paper describes the flight demonstration in detail, along with test results.

Book excerpt: Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE) radar provides controllers with a means to observe surface traffic movement. In extremely low visibility controllers can't see all of a field. ASDE can then increase safety and help expedite traffic flow. The kinds of accidents which ASDE can help prevent have not occurred. For important types of runway combinations, its contribution to expediting flow appears to be very small, except where intersecting runways are used. As minimums are lowered and low visibility flow rates increase, ASDE's contribution to safety and expediting flow will also increase. Major recommendations are: brightdaylight ASDE displays should not be developed and installed unless ASDE will remain in tower cabs for a long time; plans to survey (dispose of) some ASDE's suggests this is unlikely. Bright ASR displays should be provided for tower cabs before bright ASDE displays. Consideration should be given to turning off some ASDE's and maintaining them in a moth-ball status. (Author).

These tests were conducted to determine the extent to which the ASDE-3 met requirements as presented by the Air Traffic Service and what the controllers' opinions were of the radar. Tests conducted were: airport surface coverage, capability, target detection as a function of speed between aircraft and aircraft to obstruction resolution, target size and shape determination, standing target heading, and runway clearance.
