Book America s Changing Neighborhoods 3 volumes

Download or read book America s Changing Neighborhoods 3 volumes written by Reed Ueda and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 1295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique panoramic survey of ethnic groups throughout the United States that explores the diverse communities in every region, state, and big city. Race, ethnicity, and immigrants' lives and identity: these are all key topics that Americans need to study in order to fully understand U.S. culture, society, politics, economics, and history. Learning about "place" through our own historical and contemporary neighborhoods is an ideal way to better grasp the important role of race and ethnicity in the United States. This reference work comprehensively covers both historical and contemporary ethnic and immigrant neighborhoods through A–Z entries that explore the places and people in every major U.S. region and neighborhood. America's Changing Neighborhoods: An Exploration of Diversity uniquely combines the history of ethnic groups with the history of communities, offering an interdisciplinary examination of the nation's makeup. It gives readers perspective and insight into ethnicity and race based on the geography of enclaves across the nation, in regions and in specific cities or localized areas within a city. Among the entries are nearly 200 "neighborhood biographies" that provide histories of local communities and their ethnic groups. Images, sidebars, cross-references at the end of each entry, and cross-indexing of entries serve readers conducting preliminary as well as in-depth research. The book's state-by-state entries also offer population data, and an appendix of ancestry statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau details ethnic and racial diversity.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Americans made a significant contribution to Franklin D. Roosevelt's election to the White House in 1932 and to the victory of the Democratic Party in the four subsequent presidential contests. This volume offers a case study of their electoral behavior. Through a quantitative analysis of the Italian-American vote between 1916 and 1948, this study demonstrates that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the creation of a Democratic majority in the Little Italy of Providence foreran both Alfred Smith's 1928 candidacy for the presidency and the Depression of the 1930s. War II and underwent a revitalization in the postwar years. Political recognition and patronage were so central to Italian Americans' party choice that their support for the Democratic Party reached a climax when a member of the community, John Pastore, ran for governor on the Democratic ticket in the mid 1940s. Stefano Luconi teaches the History of North America at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Florence.

Book excerpt: Legacy of a Hero is the remarkable story of Genio Basilici, legendary patriarch of an Italian community near Boston. In 1946, he sends his son, Enrico, to Italy to find and assist family members in the aftermath of war. Alternating with his son's search and harrowing escape from a Neapolitan street gang and his brief but passionate affair with Graciella, Genio relives his arrival in America at the turn of the century in flashbacks of memory. It was a time when virulent prejudice and constant, anti-Italian hate campaigns forced him to step forward in defense of his countrymen; the time of the Great Depression, of Sacco and Vanzetti and the anarchist movement. It was a time when a huge influx of non-English speaking immigrants flooded our cities and sparked a firestorm of resentment. It was an incendiary era when ordinary individuals rose to extraordinary heights. It was a time to remember.

  • Author : Evelyn Savidge Sterne

Download or read book Ballots and Bibles written by Evelyn Savidge Sterne and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-nineteenth century, Providence, Rhode Island, an early industrial center, became a magnet for Catholic immigrants seeking jobs. The city created as a haven for Protestant dissenters was transformed by the arrival of Italian, Irish, and French-Canadian workers. By 1905, more than half of its population was Catholic—Rhode Island was the first state in the nation to have a Catholic majority. Civic leaders, for whom Protestantism was an essential component of American identity, systematically sought to exclude the city's Catholic immigrants from participation in public life, most flagrantly by restricting voting rights. Through her account of the newcomers' fight for political inclusion, Evelyn Savidge Sterne offers a fresh perspective on the nationwide struggle to define American identity at the turn of the twentieth century. In a departure from standard histories of immigrants and workers in the United States, Ballots and Bibles views religion as a critical tool for new Americans seeking to influence public affairs. In Providence, this book demonstrates, Catholics used their parishes as political organizing spaces. Here they learned to be speakers and leaders, eventually orchestrating a successful response to Rhode Island's Americanization campaigns and claiming full membership in the nation. The Catholic Church must, Sterne concludes, be considered as powerful an engine for ethnic working-class activism from the 1880s until the 1930s as the labor union or the political machine.
