Any attempt to divorce administrative from professional work is fraught with great danger to the success of our calling. If the administrator neglects the advice of his clinical brother his faulty administration may result, during a big battle, in the loss of literally hundreds of lives and of limbs which would other wise have been saved. The essays in this volume focus on one important aspect of that relationship: the practice and development of medicine within the armed forces from the late nineteenth century through to the end of the Second World War.
