  • Author : Amaka L. Anyaoha
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9781303020285
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Surgical Time out written by Amaka L. Anyaoha and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Surgical time-out is a period of time in which all members of the surgical team are actively involved and participate in positively identifying the patient for whom the surgical procedure is intended and the visibility of the marked site of the procedure. It is mandatory that all staff members involved in the procedure participate in the time-out to avoid errors. During this period, effective communication is paramount in ensuring that all errors are avoided and the procedure is carried out as intended. The purpose of this educational project was to provide an educational curriculum for advance practice nurses, especially those with the intention of working in perioperative settings. Communication failure among perioperative team members can threaten the effectiveness of a surgical time-out and leave room for errors regarding patient safety. The educational curriculum and project design was descriptive using pre/posttests formulated to create awareness and understanding in nurses regarding the surgical timeout. Data will indicate the nurses' knowledge and understanding of the importance of an effective surgical time-out on patient safety.
