Book Surgical Observations on Tumours

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Observations on Tumours: With Cases and Operations One of the most useful Works in surgery, Which I can imagine, would be a collection of repre sentations of all known tumours. The inade quacy of language to convey to the mind the appearance of these diseases, renders an appeal to'the senses desirable, Whenever it can be em ployed; and When the objects thefiiselves cannot be presented, the best substitute for them is to be found in casts and engravings. Mr. John Bell and Sir Astley Cooper have done much to supply this desideratum, and I should have felt proud to have efi'ected something that might be considered an addition to their labours. To accomplish this Would have required more time and better oppor tunities than it has been my privilege to enjoy. But as I could not abandon the attempt to be useful to those Who have not access to more perfect works, I have procured such represen tations of tumours as could conveniently be ob tained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Observations on Tumours: With Cases and Operations Having been in the habit of examining and preserving the tumours presented by surgical operations, and having thus made a considerable collection of these objects, I was naturally led to add some lectures, on this branch of surgical science, to my usual course. After doing this, it occurred to me that it might be useful to my profession in this country to commit these lectures to writing, for public use. My plan was to have given place in them to the facts I had collected, and to these only; on the ground that the generalities, which naturally made a part of a surgical course, would be found more thoroughly elaborated and better displayed in works already published. Book Preoperative Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

Download or read book Preoperative Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy written by Joseph Ragaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in adjuvant therapies of cancer, the regi mens of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy treatment which are presently available fail to cure the majority of cancer patients. Pre operative (neoadjuvant) chemotherapy represents a new approach in drug scheduling, based on sound theoretical, pharmacokinetic, and experimental principles. The preoperative timing of chemotherapy before definitive sur gery is not a minor change in the therapy of cancer. To be successful, large numbers of practitioners and their patients must participate. Substantial alterations of many aspects of the present management of cancer will have to follow. Therefore, before such therapy can be fully and routinely implemented, results of the novel treatment and its rationale have to be carefully evaluated. In preoperative treatment, other features will likely gain impor tance. For the first time, clinicians have a chance to follow the in vivo response of the tumor exposed to preoperative chemotherapy. The subsequent histological assessment of the tumor sample may likely become an important prognostic guide, permitting more re fined individual approaches to the planning of postoperative adju vant treatment. The value of such a treatment strategy can already be appreciated in the clinical setting, as seen from the therapy of osteosarcoma. Furthermore, preoperative chemotherapy might render previously inoperable tumors operable and hence resectable with a curative intention. The preoperative reduction of tumor bulk may also effectively decrease the need for more radical operations, permitting a more uniform adoption of conservative surgery.

This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Observations on Tumours, and on Lumbar Abscesses The observations, which I have had an opportunity of making in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, on the various tumours which occur in the human body, have been so numerous, that I have almost felt myself under the necessity of forming some classification of those diseases. This classification I have attempted according to their anatomical structure, which allows, at the same time, of a corresponding arrangement of those practical remarks that have been promiscuously collected. I have long felt so sensibly the advantages resulting from an orderly arrangement of this extensive subject, that I have taught it for some years in my Lectures in the manner exhibited in the following pages.
