Book excerpt: This book is distinctive in that it is a truly practical guide to use of the laparoscopic approach for the treatment of many abdominal diseases. Rather than simply offering a general description of surgical laparoscopic techniques, it provides the knowledge required in order to introduce basic laparoscopic procedures into daily practice or to commence advanced laparoscopic surgery. For each surgical procedure, key points are highlighted, the necessary equipment is described, and the operating room setup essential to avoid errors or loss of time is explained. Many flow charts, tables, and figures are included to assist fast and intuitive comprehension. The book will be of interest to all of the "actors" in the operating room, including especially surgeons in training, established surgeons, nurses, and anesthetists.

Book Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

Download or read book Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair written by Ara Darzi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The repair and management of inguinal hernias represents a significant part of the general surgeon's workload. It was therefore inevitable that following the success of laparoscopic cholysysectomy, surgeons would develop a procedure for repairing inguinal hernias laparoscopically. This book provides the first comprehensive account of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. The Editors' aim has been to give step-by-step guidance to each operative procedure discussed with reference to long term results. One of the biggest problems facing surgeons learning new laparoscopic procedures is an understanding and orientation of basic anatomy when viewed through the laparoscope. This issue is discussed at length with guidance on how to avoid the common pitfalls. Final chapters look at the advantages and disadvantages of the Lichtenstein open mesh hernia repair approach, safety and properties of non-absorbal mesh with the last chapters concentrating on laparoscopic suture repair and the new mini hernia operation.

Book Tips and Techniques in Laparoscopic Surgery

Download or read book Tips and Techniques in Laparoscopic Surgery written by Jean-Louis Dulucq and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing a surgical operation could be compared to na- gating inside the human body. Two essential requirements are necessary for a successful apprenticeship: ? A perfect understanding of the roadmap, the anatomy ? Regular training with expert surgeon teachers showing str- egies, tactics, manoeuvres, and gestures to make the journey safe, efficient and fast For decades this was the way taken by apprentice-surgeons and also by surgeons already in practice concerned about upd- ing their knowledge. For years their only travelling companions were books, drawings, and pictures. However, printed medium cannot satisfactorily and properly reproduce the movements of a manoeuvring surgeon. In open surgery, only the two first - sistants can precisely capture by direct vision what is happ- ing in the depth of the operating field. Therefore, the duration of apprenticeship is long and restricted to a small number of people per teacher. The introduction of movie cameras into the operating rooms improved the quality of surgical education. But filming in open surgery is not so easy. The cameraperson has to be well trained to catch good takes in the depth of a pit between the heads, shoulders, and fingers of the surgeon and assistants. Most of the time, those constraints disturb the op- ator’s manoeuvres, altering their pedagogical value. With the introduction of laparoscopic surgery (LS), using a video camera providing images in real time on a television screen, everything changed.

Book The Laparoscopic Surgery Revolution

Download or read book The Laparoscopic Surgery Revolution written by David W. Page MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a surgeon with 40 years' experience in practice and instruction, this book provides vital, up-to-date information that explains the strengths and weaknesses of the laparoscopic surgery field to enable potential surgical patients to make the best decisions and choose a surgeon wisely. More than 30 years ago, laparoscopic or "keyhole" surgery suddenly appeared as an operative technique. Laparoscopy quickly grew in the U.S. surgical field, where now more than two million operations annually use the technique. But is the training surgeons receive in laparoscopy sufficient to ensure patient safety? What are the specific situations where laparoscopy is beneficial and justified, and when is it ill-advised due to the additional complexity and risk factors? This is the first book written for general readers—avoiding medical jargon wherever possible—to expose the gritty history and downsides of "minimally invasive surgery." Additionally, it provides the perspective and insights of an esteemed surgeon who was working at the inception of laparoscopy and has a full understanding of this now widely popular procedure across its development and lifespan. Readers will learn about the emergence of laparoscopic techniques in the 1990s, understand how minimally invasive surgery has been a boon to the business of surgery and to patient health and recovery overall, appreciate how the complexity involved in laparoscopic surgery has led to a higher incidence of surgeon "incompetence," and grasp the responsibility of a patient to take steps to assure that the surgeon is qualified before going into the operating room. Examination of eye-opening statistics on the outcomes of laparoscopic procedures documents the high level of capability of most surgeons, as well as the lack of appropriate ability with certain laparoscopic operations in the hands of some surgeons. The author also spells out how informed patients can be prepared to discuss and consider all aspects of an operation—and the surgeon's training and experience—to assure the best outcome for their health.

This book was released on 2006-02-08 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous textbooks detailing almost every aspect of the different laparoscopic procedures. However, in this era of evidence-based medicine, a text focusing on the controversies – from the laparoscopic as well as the general surgeon's point of view – is missing. This book is not intended to be yet another textbook of laparoscopy; instead, its main purpose is to address unsettled issues of controversy. This will significantly enhance evidence-based knowledge of this developing field, stimulate thinking and discussions in rounds and meetings, assist surgeons in their decision making and stimulate further research. This book is not aimed only at laparoscopic surgeons – with their steadily increasing number – but also at general surgeons and surgical trainees. It will define and sharpen points of controversy by internationally recognized authors, and thus provide 'state of the art' quality to each topic.
