Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Surgery, Vol. 1 In presenting a new work on Surgery the author has endeavored to bring together the most recent and improved methods of surgical practice, and, with the aid of numerous cross - references, to arrange these ina form readily available to the student and practitioner. As a necessary preliminary to this, the so - called art of surgery, the effort has been made to set forth the fundamental principles underlying what is known as the science of surgery in both an interesting and an instructive manner. The study of inflammation from the surgical viewpoint is based on the tissue changes that follow the infliction of wounds. Contrary to the usual custom the subject of Surgical Bacteriology is introduced in connection with the etiology of inflammation, in which it is an important factor. The grouping of the topics differs somewhat from the arrangement usually employed, as will be seen by reference to the table of contents. It is believed that the study of the subject will? Be facilitated by this method of classification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Bacteria to Practical Surgery: The Address in Surgery Delivered Before the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania, June 4, 1890 The revolution which has occurred in practical surgery since the discovery of the relation of microorganisms to the compli cations occurring in wounds has caused me to select this subject for discussion. Although many of my hearers are familiar with the germ theory of disease, it is possible that it may interest some of them to have put before them in a short address a few points in bacteriology which are of value to the practical surgeon. Book Lectures Upon the Principles of Surgery

Download or read book Lectures Upon the Principles of Surgery written by Charles B. Nancrede and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures Upon the Principles of Surgery: Delivered at the University of Michigan Although many excellent works have been written treating of the Principles of Surgery, the attempt to render them too comprehensive has marred their useful ness for the undergraduate, or undue prominence has been given to the author's special methods of applying principles to practice. It must be manifest that it is impossible in the compass of a few hundreds of pages to give adequately all the essentials of surgical path ology, bacteriology, and the more or less obsolete teach ings of the past, when each of these subjects requires a larger volume than any work extant on the Principles of Surgery; yet this has been attempted by many writers. Modern specialism in the teaching of medical science has recognized the necessity of, and has provided for, specific instruction in pathology, bacteriology, etc., so that anything beyond a mere reference to the peculiar ities of form and growth of various germs, or the changes undergone during diverse pathological proc esses, would be a useless repetition, occupying time more properly belonging to new studies. Book A Text Book of General Bacteriology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of General Bacteriology Classic Reprint written by Edwin Oakes Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of General Bacteriology This book is the outgrowth of lectures given to students in the University of Chicago during the past few years. The subject is one that the writer believes should find a place in every general scientific course. Bacteriology is chiefly of professional interest to the medical student, but the subject also bears technical relations to household administration, to agriculture, to sanitation and sanitary engineering and to various industries and technological pursuits. For the general scientific student and reader bacteriology presents certain aspects that tend to widen the outlook upon a variety of human interests. It need hardly be said that within the compass of this work an exhaustive treatment of all sides of bacteriology is impossible. The needs of the advanced worker can be met only - and that but in part - by such monumental special treatises as the Handbuch der Pathogenen Mikroorganismen, edited by Kolle and Wassermann, and the Technische Mykologie, edited by Lafar. A general introduction to the subject, however, with some regard for perspective and with emphasis on general rather than on special questions has seemed worth attempting. The reader who wishes to acquire greater familiarity with the subject will find some bibliographical references given as a sort of first aid to the investigator. These include references to some articles of classic or historic interest, to some giving valuable summaries or bibliographies of important subjects and to a few in fields where investigation is very active or opinions considerably at variance. No pretension to completeness is made. The fundamental principles and methods of laboratory work are treated as fully as seems desirable in a book of this class. The tendency manifested in all the natural sciences towards the elaboration of special laboratory manuals and guides has much in its favor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Bacteriology A Manual of Bacteriology, therefore, which fairly represents the present state of knowledge, will consist largely of a statement of facts established by experimental data, and cannot fail to be of value to physicians and to advanced students of bacteriology as a work of reference. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. That portion Of the book which is printed in large type will, it is hoped, be found to give an accurate and sufficiently extended account of the most important pathogenic bacteria, and of bacteriological technology, to serve as a text-book for medical students and others interested in this department Of science. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type. For the benefit of students of medicine and others who do not care especially for the detailed descriptions Of non-pathogenic bacteria and the extensive bibliography contained in the Manual, this text-book OF bacteriology is now published. It comprises that portion of the Manual above referred to as printed in large type, revised to in clude all important additions to our knowledge of the pathogenic bacteria since the original date Of publication.
