  • Author : David E. Campbell
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American society is rapidly secularizing–a radical departure from its historically high level of religiosity–and politics is a big part of the reason. Just as, forty years ago, the Religious Right arose as a new political movement, today secularism is gaining traction as a distinct and politically energized identity. This book examines the political causes and political consequences of this secular surge, drawing on a wealth of original data. The authors show that secular identity is in part a reaction to the Religious Right. However, while the political impact of secularism is profound, there may not yet be a Secular Left to counterbalance the Religious Right. Secularism has introduced new tensions within the Democratic Party while adding oxygen to political polarization between Democrats and Republicans. Still there may be opportunities to reach common ground if politicians seek to forge coalitions that encompass both secular and religious Americans.

Book A Preliminary View of Storm Surges Before and After Storm Modifications for Alongshore moving Storms

Download or read book A Preliminary View of Storm Surges Before and After Storm Modifications for Alongshore moving Storms written by Chester P. Jelesnianski and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical means are used to compute storm surges (meteorological tides) in a standard basin of constant slope, bounded by a straightline coast. All storm tracks in this study are constrained to lie parallel to the coast; the storm can lie at any distance from the coast and travel with any speed, but once set, the distance and speed are invariant with time. Two driving forces, wind stress and atmospheric pressure gradient, are used to generate surges; they are derived from an analytic wind profile. The model storm is described with two invariant parameters, storm size and difference between ambient and central pressure of the storm.

Book excerpt: “The definitive account . . . A fascinating combination of grand strategy and personal vignettes” (Max Boot, The Wall Street Journal). Finalist for the 2013 Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History Surge is an insider’s view of the most decisive phase of the Iraq War. After exploring the dynamics of the war during its first three years, the book takes the reader on a journey to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where the controversial new US Army and Marine Corps counterinsurgency doctrine was developed; to Washington, DC, and the halls of the Pentagon, where the joint chiefs of staff struggled to understand the conflict; to the streets of Baghdad, where soldiers worked to implement the surge and reenergize the flagging war effort before the Iraqi state splintered; and to the halls of Congress, where Amb. Ryan Crocker and Gen. David Petraeus testified in some of the most contentious hearings in recent history. Using newly declassified documents, unpublished manuscripts, interviews, author notes, and published sources, Surge explains how President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Ambassador Crocker, General Petraeus, and other US and Iraqi political and military leaders shaped the surge from the center of the maelstrom in Baghdad and Washington. “This is one of the best books to emerge from the Iraq War. I expect it will be remembered as one of the most insightful accounts from an insider of the key ‘surge’ phase of that conflict. The chapter on the Sunni Awakening especially stands out as a terrific overview of that critical development.” —Thomas E. Ricks, author of Fiasco

Book Electromagnetic Computation Methods for Lightning Surge Protection Studies

Download or read book Electromagnetic Computation Methods for Lightning Surge Protection Studies written by Yoshihiro Baba and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents current research into electromagnetic computation theories with particular emphasis on Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method This book is the first to consolidate current research and to examine the theories of electromagnetic computation methods in relation to lightning surge protection. The authors introduce and compare existing electromagnetic computation methods such as the method of moments (MOM), the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC), the finite element method (FEM), the transmission-line modeling (TLM) method, and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The application of FDTD method to lightning protection studies is a topic that has matured through many practical applications in the past decade, and the authors explain the derivation of Maxwell’s equations required by the FDTD, and modeling of various electrical components needed in computing lightning electromagnetic fields and surges with the FDTD method. The book describes the application of FDTD method to current and emerging problems of lightning surge protection of continuously more complex installations, particularly in critical infrastructures of energy and information, such as overhead power lines, air-insulated sub-stations, wind turbine generator towers and telecommunication towers. Both authors are internationally recognized experts in the area of lightning study and this is the first book to present current research in lightning surge protection Examines in detail why lightning surges occur and what can be done to protect against them Includes theories of electromagnetic computation methods and many examples of their application Accompanied by a sample printed program based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method written in C++ program

Book excerpt: Was Sandy a freak of nature, or the new normal? On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy reached the shores of the northeastern United States to become one of the most destructive storms in history. But was Sandy a freak event, or should we have been better prepared for it? Was it a harbinger of things to come as the climate warms? In this fascinating and accessible work of popular science, atmospheric scientist and Columbia University professor Adam Sobel addresses these questions, combining his deep knowledge of the climate with his firsthand experience of the event itself. Sobel explains the remarkable atmospheric conditions that gave birth to Sandy and determined its path. He gives us insight into the science that led to the accurate forecasts of the storm from genesis to landfall, as well as an understanding of why our meteorological vocabulary failed our leaders in warning us about this unprecedented weather system—part hurricane, part winter-type nor'easter, fully deserving of the title "Superstorm." Storm Surge brings together the melting glaciers, the warming oceans, and a broad historical perspective to explain how our changing climate and developing coastlines are making New York and other cities more vulnerable. Engaging, informative, and timely, Sobel's book provokes us to think differently about how we can better prepare for the storms in our future.

Book Data Assessment for Electrical Surge Protective Devices

Download or read book Data Assessment for Electrical Surge Protective Devices written by Eddie Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief develops a data collection plan to assess loss related to electrical surges in homes, and explores the potential impact devices that prevent these surges could have in mitigating these losses. Key topics such as surge sources, surge effects and residential surge protection are clearly defined. Recent fire safety codes proposed a requirement that every dwelling unit be fitted with a surge protection device, as every year there is property damage to electrical and electronic equipment resulting from electrical surges. These proposals have not been implemented due to a lack of reliable data, which this brief seeks to change. The authors evaluate surge phenomena and their sources, surge protection methods, surge protection strategies and industry standards in order to present a data plan that can accurately assess loss related to electrical surges in homes.

Book Factors Behind the Ukrainian Evangelical Missionary Surge from 1989 to 1999

Download or read book Factors Behind the Ukrainian Evangelical Missionary Surge from 1989 to 1999 written by John Edward White and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the Soviet Union was one of the most closed places in the world to missionary work. As perestroika came in the late 1980s and the Soviet Union fell in 1991, a spiritual vacuum formed as massive numbers of people became interested in Christianity. An unprecedented freedom allowed evangelicals to engage in missionary work. Much has been written about foreign evangelical missionary work during this period, but virtually nothing has been written about nationals doing ministry. This book examines the remarkable surge in Ukrainian evangelical missionary work from 1989 to 1999. Both Baptists and Pentecostals engaged in a wave of missions, flowing from Ukraine to the end of the earth: Siberia. What were these pioneering missionaries like? What motivated them? What enabled them to do what had been forbidden for so long? What legacy did they leave for us today? What can we learn from their example for future missions? This book also looks at how a surge in missions takes place, analyzing the factors behind the Ukrainian evangelical missionary surge by looking at different models for change. Here we consider: what steps can we take to help bring about new missionary surges?

Book Characteristics of the Hurricane Storm Surge

Download or read book Characteristics of the Hurricane Storm Surge written by D. Lee Harris and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of this lack of basic data, theoretical research has been largely restricted to calculations based on unverified postulates concerning the phenomena involved and on attempts to evaluate them by the available empirical data. Although studies of this kind have led to a better understanding of the phenomena, they have not led to the development of any outstandingly successful prediction systems.

Book Storm surge Forecasting

Download or read book Storm surge Forecasting written by J. W. Nickerson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains an adaptation of a unique storm-surge forecasting technique developed by Dr. C.P. Jelesnianski. This technique results in a computed storm surge profile at the inner boundary of an artificial standard basin seaward of the coast. The profile is derived from nomograms based upon a standard storm passing over a standard basin. Thumb rules and guidelines are presented in the publication for subjectively modifying the computer storm surge height as it moves shoreward of the artificial basin boundary, to fit the natural conditions of a particular coastline. Major advantages of this system are its applicability to almost any locale, its adaptability to data normally available to the field forecaster and the speed with which the forecast may be modified to remain current with natural fluctuations of the storm.
