I am aware that this has been much in fashion in this country; and, that even men of distin 'guished character and great acquirements, have condescended to become the mere press correctors for their Transatlantic brethren. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Operations of Surgery (Jacobson), Vol. 1: The Upper Extremity; The Head and Neck; The Thorax; The Lower Extremity; The Vertebral Column The plan of the book, with which some judges found fault, remains unchanged. Mr. Jacobson adopted the division by regions deliberately, desiring that those for whom the book is intended should study the anatomy of each region at the same time as the account of the operations. In this edition it has been found convenient to insert the section on the Leg in the first volume, so that the increasing claims of abdominal surgery could be adequately met in the second volume. Book Surgery of the Head Classic Reprint

Download or read book Surgery of the Head Classic Reprint written by Louis Bathe Rawling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgery of the Head The areas Supplied by the sensory nerves of the scalp are depicted in the accompanying figure. The occipito-frontalis possesses four small muscular bellies, two anterior arising from the supra-orbital ridge and two posterior from the superior curved line of the occipital bone, the four blending into an aponeurosis which is separated from the underlying bone by a plane of loose connective tissue - the sub aponeurotic tissue - the aponeurosis moving freely over the bone. It is along this loose layer that the scalp is torn away in scalp injuries. The aponeurosis thins off towards the sides of the head, blending with the temporal fascia and attached to the temporal ridges. Blood or pus may spread widely throughout the subaponeurotic space, limited in front by the orbital ridges, behind by the curved line of the ocei pital bone and laterally by the temporal crest. In all cases, however, the effusion, whether blood or pus, will tend to gravitate towards the more dependent part of the head, usually the occiput, there leading to marked 'bogginess with oedema and perhaps with discoloration of the skin. The two anterior bellies of the muscle are supplied direct by the facial nerve, the two posterior by its posterior auricular branch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Urgent Surgery, Vol. 1: Introductory; Head; Neck; Chest; Spine; Abdomen Urgent surgery does not mean merely the surgery Of injuries at the present day the number of clinical conditions demanding immediate surgical action is very great. Step by step, as Operative results have improved, the indications of urgency have extended and multiplied we are better equipped than formerly, and our responsibilities have thus enormously increased. The surgical spirit belongs to all times in all ages, conscientious and energetic men have rebelled against the theory of laisser fain: and laisser mourn. Have not our predecessors dimly foreseen, devised, and tried many of the Operations which are in general use to-day? Our own horizon has cleared we see further, and our surgical initiative is freed from its early fetters. That, however, is not enough; ere modern surgery can fulfil its promises and play its proper part, its formulae and precepts must be generalized; and they must be introduced into the everyday work, the spirit, and customs of the profession. It is time to sweep away that ill-omened duality, that inexplicable antithesis of doctrine and practice doctrine, rejuvenated, scientific, positive; practice, governed only too Often by the errors and empiricisms of other days. This it is indeed which occasions difficulties and Obstacles, so much more numerous and disconcerting because the indications of urgency may present themselves in any circle, at any time, and in any hands.
