Book Surgical Care at the District Hospital

Download or read book Surgical Care at the District Hospital written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2003-07-21 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many patients who present to district (first-referral) level hospitals require surgical treatment for trauma, obstetric, abdominal or orthopedic emergencies. Often surgery cannot be safely postponed to allow their transfer to a secondary or tertiary-level hospital but many district hospitals in developing countries have no specialist surgical teams and are staffed by medical, nursing, and paramedical personnel who perform a wide range of surgical procedures often with inadequate training. The quality of surgical and acute care is often further constrained by poor facilities, inadequate low-technology apparatus and limited supplies of drugs, materials, and other essentials. The mission of the team responsible for Clinical Procedures in the World Health Organization Department of Essential Health Technologies (EHT) is to promote the quality of clinical care through the identification, promotion and standardization of appropriate procedures, equipment and materials, particularly at district hospital level. WHO/BCT has identified education and training as a particular priority, especially for non-specialist practitioners who practice surgery and anesthesia. It has therefore developed Surgical Care at the District Hospital as a practical resource for individual practitioners and for use in undergraduate and postgraduate programs in-service training and continuing medical education programs. The manual is a successor of three earlier publications that are widely used throughout the world and that remain important reference texts: General Surgery at the District Hospital (WHO 1988), Surgery at the District Hospital: Obstetrics Gynecology Orthopedics and Traumatology (WHO 1991), Anesthesia at the District Hospital (WHO 1988; second edition 2000). This new manual draws together material from these three publications into a single volume which includes new and updated material, as well as material from Managing Complications in Pregnancy and Childbirth: A Guide for Midwives and Doctors (WHO 2000).

Book General Surgery at the District Hospital

Download or read book General Surgery at the District Hospital written by John Cook and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated guide to general surgical procedures suitable for use in small hospitals that are subject to constraints on personnel, equipment, and drugs. Information is addressed to the medical officer who may not have formal training in surgery, yet has gained experience under supervision of all the relevant techniques. Following an overview of basic principles, the book presents detailed information on surgical procedures for the face and neck, chest, abdomen, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital system. Pediatric surgery is also covered. Most of the operations included are for saving life, alleviating pain, preventing the development of serious complications, or stabilizing a patient's condition pending referral. Simple but standard surgical techniques have been selected wherever possible, and procedures that require specialist skills or that could add unnecessarily to the doctor's workload have been avoided. Lists of essential surgical instruments, equipment and supplies conclude the text.

Book Surgery at the District Hospital

Download or read book Surgery at the District Hospital written by John Cook and published by World Health Organisation (Who). This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to essential surgical procedures for treating the major complications of pregnancy and childbirth and for managing traumatic injuries, including fractures and burns. Gynecological procedures commonly required in small hospitals are also covered. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on standard surgical protocols that represent the safest line of action in hospital settings where equipment may be primitive, drugs limited, and specialist services sparse. The first six chapters describe essential procedures for treating the major complications of pregnancy and childbirth and for preventing maternal deaths. Life-threatening emergencies, such as obstructed labor and ruptured ectopic pregnancy, are covered together with more general obstetric procedures. Gynecological operations form the focus of four chapters, which describe general gynecological procedures, techniques for female sterilization and IUD insertion, and procedures for obtaining biopsy or cytological samples from the endometrium, cervix, and vulva. The remaining 14 chapters describe essential techniques in orthopedics and traumatology, providing details on both basic orthopedic techniques and the management of specific fractures, dislocations, burns, and other injuries.

Book Rehabilitation Surgery for Deformities Due to Poliomyelitis

Download or read book Rehabilitation Surgery for Deformities Due to Poliomyelitis written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1993 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to surgical procedures that can facilitate rehabilitation of selected patients with deformities due to poliomyelitis. Addressed to doctors providing surgical services in district hospitals the book concentrates on simple procedures that can significantly facilitate rehabilitation and improve the physical independence of polio victims. The importance of including physical therapy in the management of patients is repeatedly emphasized. The manual can be used for training purposes or as an aide mTmoire. The book covers both simple essential procedures that can be carried out by a general duty doctor with some experience in an average district hospital and those more difficult procedures that require more experience and better than average facilities. Most of the procedures covered are corrective and stabilizing procedures on the lower limbs which aim to enable patients to stand and move. The book features nine chapters presented in two parts. Chapters in the first part describe the disease and its sequelae provide detailed advice on the tests to be used when evaluating patients and selecting the appropriate procedures and explain a number of basic surgical techniques. Chapters in the second and most extensive part describe specific surgical procedures for the hip knee foot and ankle and elbow. Although some procedures involving bone are described the handbook stresses that these techniques require more training and experience.

Book Assisting at Surgical Operations

Download or read book Assisting at Surgical Operations written by Comus Whalan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many superb books on how to do operations but there are few or none on how to assist at them, and none written either by or for medical students or doctors. Therefore, the skills that make an expert surgical assistant are difficult to acquire. Normally, they can only be learnt in a haphazard way, by spending years in the operating theatre. This book describes those skills in a concise and systematic way, in surgery in general, and in ten different speciality areas. Although intended mainly for clinical-level medical students and junior doctors, other people who assist at surgical operations, including general practitioners, nurse assistants and surgical technologists, will also find it useful. Whether planning a career in surgery, or simply aiming for high marks in a surgical rotation, there are few better ways to impress a surgeon than by skilfully assisting at surgical operations.

Book Hospital Based Emergency Care

Download or read book Hospital Based Emergency Care written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-03 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today our emergency care system faces an epidemic of crowded emergency departments, patients boarding in hallways waiting to be admitted, and daily ambulance diversions. Hospital-Based Emergency Care addresses the difficulty of balancing the roles of hospital-based emergency and trauma care, not simply urgent and lifesaving care, but also safety net care for uninsured patients, public health surveillance, disaster preparation, and adjunct care in the face of increasing patient volume and limited resources. This new book considers the multiple aspects to the emergency care system in the United States by exploring its strengths, limitations, and future challenges. The wide range of issues covered includes: • The role and impact of the emergency department within the larger hospital and health care system. • Patient flow and information technology. • Workforce issues across multiple disciplines. • Patient safety and the quality and efficiency of emergency care services. • Basic, clinical, and health services research relevant to emergency care. • Special challenges of emergency care in rural settings. Hospital-Based Emergency Care is one of three books in the Future of Emergency Care series. This book will be of particular interest to emergency care providers, professional organizations, and policy makers looking to address the deficiencies in emergency care systems.
