Book Lithology Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Glacial Sediments Overlying Kimberlite at Smeaton Saskatchewan

Download or read book Lithology Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Glacial Sediments Overlying Kimberlite at Smeaton Saskatchewan written by Leonard Harvey Thorleifson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation summarized in this report was designed as a case study regarding the frequency & chemistry of kimberlite indicator minerals in Pleistocene glacial sediments from a kimberlite field and a vertical profile of data that could be compared to surface till data. The study site was located near Smeaton in central Saskatchewan underlain by Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks interbedded with extrusive kimberlitic debris. Cores were obtained from the upper part of the Cretaceous sequence and from the overlying Quaternary sequence, and laboratory studies were carried out on the core lithology, matrix carbonate content, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Results are presented regarding sediment unit descriptions, bulk mineralogy of sediment-derived concentrates, kimberlite indicator minerals, visible gold, geochemistry, and borehole logging. The provenance of the sedimentary sequences is discussed along with the implications for diamond exploration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of papers presented in 1987, showing a variety of types of research being carried out in different geological settings in Canada and Finland. The papers indicate the value of grassroots studies in glacial geology and how the basis for drift prospecting is a thorough understanding of the provenance, stratigraphy, and ice flow directions of glacial sequences, backed by data on the geochemistry, lithology, and mineralogy of glacial sediments. Abstracts are included for each paper.
