This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, 2003 and 2005, the Canada Nunavut Geoscience Office and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with Polar Continental Shelf Program, Dalhousie University, and University of Alberta, undertook studies of northern Baffin Island to provide an improved understanding of the distribution, nature and chemistry of surficial materials, and glacial history of this region, much of which is extensively covered by thick glacial deposits. Widespread till blanket and hummocky till are common in the map area, and locally meltwater channels dissected the till blanket. Ponding of glacial meltwater resulted in deposition of glaciolacustrine sediments. Some of the smaller preserved glaciers are likely Holocene in age, rather than remnants from the continental ice sheet (Pleistocene), like the Barnes Ice Cap. A complex glacial history resulted fromoverprinting of both erosive and non-erosive basal thermal regimes at various stages ofthe deglaciation, as well as overprinting of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)-related geomorphology.

Book excerpt: The southwest part of the Conn Lake map sheet lies within the Baffin Uplands Physiographic Region, where bedrock is extensively covered by thick glacial deposits. Some areas exhibiting scour were eroded by active, warm-based ice for longer periods of time than regions of cold-based ice. A northeastward early Holocene flow is associated with ice in Foxe Basin to the northeast. Four phases of ice flow were recognized. The Last Glacial maximum relates to phase 1, northeastward, when the region was covered by actively eroding warm-based ice. The second is a north-northeastward flow during the early stages of the Barnes Ice Cap. The next two phases (a later readvance, phase 3, and continued deglaciation, phase 4) are thought to relate to the proto-Barnes Ice Cap.

Book Surficial geology Chidliak Bay Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 26 B

Download or read book Surficial geology Chidliak Bay Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 26 B written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This surficial map is based on aerial photographs and satellite images interpretations, as well as on field work observations. The plateau forms a heteregenous map pattern, with patches of cold-based sediments (regolith, and regolith mixed with till) cross-cut by till deposited during glacial readvances, and glacial lakes sediments. The regolith is a pre-glacial or interglacial landscape feature. The northeastern rugged land was eroded by warm-based glaciers flowing toward the northeast, and is dominantly covered by till and bedrock outcrops. The eastern coast was dissected by valley and fiord glaciers. The Frobisher Bay moraine was formed from 9 to 8 14C ka, and the deglaciation of Chidliak Bay is dated at 8.6 14C ka. Proglacial lakes were dammed by important moraines. The observed marine limits range from 60 m asl to 85 m asl.

Book Surficial Geology Curtis Lake North Nunavut NTS 56 I North

Download or read book Surficial Geology Curtis Lake North Nunavut NTS 56 I North written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the Curtis Lake North map area is covered by streamlined till interspersed in the east by dissected bedrock ridges and plateaus, and in the west by boulder-strewn bedrock uplands. Multiple ice-flow indicators reveal a complex ice flow history during the last glaciation and following deglaciation (Figure 1). East of Curtis Lake, the largest streamlined landforms and early striations converge north-northeastward into Committee Bay, associated with ice streaming during the last glaciation. Pervasive north to north-northwestward streamlined landforms associated with late striations formed during deglaciation as the ice retreated southward. Large meltwater corridors carried meltwater northward, infilling north-trending valleys near the head of the Committee Bay drainage basin. Lateral meltwater channels developed in the southern uplands at the margin of cold-based ice remnants. In the southeast, evidence for a late deglacial eastward ice flow reversal is found in the form of weakly fluted till, fine striations, and glaciofluvial sediments.
