Book Surficial Geology of the Laurentian Channel and the Western Grand Banks of Newfoundland

Download or read book Surficial Geology of the Laurentian Channel and the Western Grand Banks of Newfoundland written by Gordon B. Fader and published by Ottawa, Canada : Fisheries and Oceans, Scientific Information and Publication Branch. This book was released on 1982 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Map 4015-G accompanies this report, the easternmost and sixth in a series describing the surficial geology of the south-eastern Canadian continental shelf. These regional geological studies have been conducted on a systematic basis. Canadian Hydrographic Charts 4015 (Sydney to St. Pierre), 40141 (Banquereau and Misaine Bank), 4016 (St. Pierre to St. John's), and 8009 (St. Pierre bank to Whale Bank), were used as bethymetric base maps on the compilation of the surficial geology. The map covers 120,046 km2, and is presented at a scale of 1:350,000. The surficial geology is based on an interpretation of data collected on seven cruises conducted by the Atlantic Geoscience Centre at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The report also includes brief descriptions of the physiography, bedrock geology, and physical oceanography.

Book Surficial Geology and Seabed Features of Flemish Cap Offshore Island of Newfoundland Newfoundland and Labrador

Download or read book Surficial Geology and Seabed Features of Flemish Cap Offshore Island of Newfoundland Newfoundland and Labrador written by Laura Broom and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Improved bathymetric data along with legacy seabed samples and seismic profile data have allowed for enhanced understanding of the surficial geology and seafloor morphology of Flemish Cap. Three surficial geology units are mapped: bedrock, till, and patchy sand and gravel cover. The bedrock units include a Neoproterozoic granite and granodiorite unit in the center of Flemish Cap, which is overlain by Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. These units have then been overlain by till. A patchy sand and gravel deposit covers most of Flemish Cap, and was deposited mostly through ice-rafted debris and redistributed by the Labrador and the North Atlantic Currents. The improved bathymetric data has revealed mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs) incised mostly in soft bedrock or till and eroded bedrock lineations located on eastern and southern Flemish Cap. A glacial moraine has been identified for the first time on the north side of Flemish Cap. These glacial features are evidence of a late Quaternary glacial ice cap on Flemish Cap"--Summary.

Book Surficial and Bedrock Geology Beneath the Strait of Belle Isle in the Vicinity of a Proposed Power Cable Crossing

Download or read book Surficial and Bedrock Geology Beneath the Strait of Belle Isle in the Vicinity of a Proposed Power Cable Crossing written by C. M. T. Woodworth-Lynas and published by St. John's : Department of Mines and Energy, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. This book was released on 1992 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results of geological, geophysical and engineering studies carried out by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro on the feasibility of installing high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) submarine cables beneath the Strait of Belle Isle to transmit hydroelectric power from Labrador to the Island of Newfoundland. These studies are part of a much larger program to evaluate the potential for developing hydroelectric power at the Gull Island site on the lower Churchill River in Labrador for transmission to the Island of Newfoundland. Results of most of the work in the Strait of Belle Isle were presented in the form of contract reports to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro between 1973 and 1984 but because the reports were proprietary, many reports duplicate information and others make use of work which is not sourced. This report clarifies as much as possible of the data, particularly the nomenclature of bedrock units and terminology of surficial geological features. New interpretations are given on the nomenclature of bedrock units and their distribution, and details are added to the knowledge of glacial history of the Strait based on the surficial geology and the existence of exposed suites of ribbed moraines.

Book Quaternary Geology of St Anthony Blanc Sablon Area Newfoundland and Quebec

Download or read book Quaternary Geology of St Anthony Blanc Sablon Area Newfoundland and Quebec written by D. R. Grant and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was prompted by a need for data on terrain conditions, soil materials, and glacial transport, which was required for mineral exploration, for the planning of a hydroelectric transmission corridor, for bedrock mapping, for forest inventory, and for land capability studies. A secondary reason for beginning a program of surficial mapping in this part of Newfoundland was the paucity of Quaternary geological information in a key area about which early reports debated the extent of glaciation, and where airphoto reconnaissance revealed significant new glacial and marine formations.

Book Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada

Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada written by Olav Slaymaker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical book focuses on the geomorphological landscapes of eastern Canada and provides a companion volume to “Landscapes and Landforms of Western Canada” (2017). There are a number of unique characteristics of eastern Canada’s landscapes, notably its magnificent coastlines, the extraordinary variety and extent of wetlands, the huge Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, the high incidence of meteorite craters, the spectacular Niagara Falls, urban karst in Montreal and Ottawa, youthful, glaciated karst in Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec and Nova Scotia, the ubiquitous permafrost terrain of Nunavut, Labrador and northern Quebec and the magnificent arctic fjords and glaciers. Looking at coastlines, the tidal extremes of the Bay of Fundy are world renowned; the structural complexity of the island of Newfoundland is less well known, but produces an astounding variety of coastlines in close succession; the arctic fjordlands of Baffin and Ellesmere islands and the extravagant raised beaches of Hudson Bay bear comparison with the classic fjords of Norway and the Baltic Sea raised beaches. As for wetlands, there are distinctive Arctic, Subarctic, Boreal, Eastern Temperate and Atlantic wetlands, and their extent is second only to those of Russia. In the Hudson and James Bay regions, between 75-100% of the terrestrial surface is comprised of wetlands. One of North America’s largest river basins, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, has its source in Minnesota, straddles the USA-Canada border and debouches into Quebec as the St. Lawrence River and evolves through its estuary into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a journey of almost 5,000 km. As far as meteorite craters are concerned, 10% of the world’s total are located in eastern Canada, including some of the largest and most complex landforms. They are preserved preferentially in the ancient Shield terrain of Quebec. Finally, the three million km2 of permafrost controlled relief in eastern Canada serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of eastern Canada’s landscapes to climate change. Effects of warming are expressed through thawing of the permafrost, disruption of transportation corridors and urban construction problems, ever-present geomorphic hazards.
