Download or read book Drift Prospecting written by R. N. W. DiLabio and published by Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of papers presented in 1987, showing a variety of types of research being carried out in different geological settings in Canada and Finland. The papers indicate the value of grassroots studies in glacial geology and how the basis for drift prospecting is a thorough understanding of the provenance, stratigraphy, and ice flow directions of glacial sequences, backed by data on the geochemistry, lithology, and mineralogy of glacial sediments. Abstracts are included for each paper.

Download or read book Figured Worlds written by Professor John Clammer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "World Visions can conceive of everything except alternative world visions." If this pronouncement by Umberto Eco is right, how can any ethnic group conceive of living with another group on the same territory - in Canada or elsewhere - if their world visions are incompatible? Can we sidestep incompatible world visions or should we try to understand them? Figured Worlds explores the possibilities of equilibrium between commitments to mutual understanding and the framing of strategies of negotiation. This collection begins its rich analytical investigation by describing how people - Australian Aborigines, New Zealand Maori, Japanese, and Africans - first learn the figured worlds of their own culture, made up of sensations, affirmations and will, prophecy, revelation, myth, dream, and metamorphoses. It then sets out how diverse figured worlds within a given social system are related, and concludes by offering insightful mappings of the dynamics of these relations, perceived in both their existential-ontological aspects, as well as their material-practical means. Comprising scholarship that is half Canadian and half British, this work offers important foundational perspectives into the thought worlds of cultures found within other cultures.

Download or read book Geodynamics of Rifting written by P.A. Ziegler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers giving an interdisciplinary review of 12 major rift systems from North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. These papers are written by an international group of academic and industrial specialists each of whom is most knowledgeable about the respective rift. The analyzed rifts were selected on the basis of availability of an as-complete-as-possible geological and geophysical data base. Thirteen papers deal with geodynamic processes governing the evolution of rifts.A comprehensive digest of the available stratigraphic, structural, geophysical and petrological data, together with an extensive list of references, is provided for each of the analyzed rift systems. The megatectonic setting and dynamics of evolution of each basin is discussed. Geodynamic models are tested against the record of the analyzed rifts. The question of "active" as against "passive" rifting is addressed. The rifts analyzed range in age from Precambrian to Recent and cover a wide spectrum of megatectonic settings. There is discussion of the evolution of rifts in a plate-tectonic frame. The case histories are followed by discussions addressing the global setting of rifts and geodynamic processes active during the development of rifted basins.
Download or read book The Geology and Ore Deposits of the Sudbury Structure written by E. G. Pye and published by Ontario, Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1984 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of a comprehensive treatise on Sudbury geology has beenevident to many geoscientists who have worked or are working inthe Sudbury area. Geoscientists presently working in the Sudburyarea were invited to contribute to a volume on Sudbury geology tocommemorate the bicentenary of Ontario and the centenary ofSudbury. The purpose of this multidisciplinary approach was todocument the geological and geophysical features of the SudburyStructure.

Book excerpt: Across North America and beyond, urban archaeology is enjoying a widespread and growing popularity, as people are drawn by its sense of mystery and the alluring prospect of discovery. The individual authors of the narratives within Underground Halifax tell stories with a "human face," bringing people and events-some ordinary, others famous-back to life, and doing so with objects as well as words. Each author in the volume employs an array of illustrations of what once lay hidden underground-map, photographs, and sketches-as well as drawings and photographs of unearthed structures and artifacts. Once you''ve been given a glimpse at what lies beneath the layers of Halifax, walking the city''s streets will never be the same again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakes and reservoirs hold about 90% of the world's surface fresh water, but overuse, water withdrawal and pollution of these bodies puts some one billion people at risk. The Encyclopedia of Lakes and Reservoirs reviews the physical, chemical and ecological characteristics of lakes and reservoirs, and describes their uses and environmental state trends in different parts of the world. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes some 200 entries in a range of topics, including acidification, artificialisation, canals, climate change effects, dams, dew ponds, drainage, eutrofication, evaporation, fisheries, hydro-electric power, nutrients, organic pollution, paleolimnology, reservoir capacities and depths, sedimentation, water resources and more.

Download or read book Applied Geothermics written by Lev Eppelbaum and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes origin and characteristics of the Earth’s thermal field, thermal flow propagation and some thermal phenomena in the Earth. Description of thermal properties of rocks and methods of thermal field measurements in boreholes, underground, at near-surface conditions enables to understand the principles of temperature field acquisition and geothermal model development. Processing and interpretation of geothermal data are shown on numerous field examples from different regions of the world. The book warps, for instance, such fields as analysis of thermal regime of the Earth’s crust, evolution and thermodynamic conditions of the magma-ocean and early Earth atmosphere, thermal properties of permafrost, thermal waters, geysers and mud volcanoes, methods of Curie discontinuity construction, quantitative interpretation of thermal anomalies, examination of some nonlinear effects, and integration of geothermal data with other geophysical methods. This book is intended for students and researchers in the field of Earth Sciences and Environment studying thermal processes in the Earth and in the subsurface. It will be useful for specialists applying thermal field analysis in petroleum, water and ore geophysics, environmental and ecological studies, archaeological prospection and climate of the past.
