Book excerpt: Density functional theory (DFT) was used to model the chemisorption of monomethylamine on Cu(111). These calculations showed that adsorbate-substrate antibonding levels form immediately above and within the d-band, while the involvement of Cu dxz,yz electrons in bonding (as observed by UPS) was also predicted. Finally, previous x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) data of methanethiolate (CH3S-) on Cu(110) were modeled with single-scattering cluster (SSC) calculations. These showed that CH3S orients normal to the surface in the [110] azimuth, but with an opposite tilt (V9 ̕off-normal) along [001]. Furthermore, the calculations suggested that methanethiolate adsorbs at hollow sites on the unreconstructed surface, with the oppositely-tilted pairs in a c(4 x 4) geometry with 50% coverage. A best fit with the experimental data was obtained for a S-CU1 separation of 1.155 Å.

It is therefore of significance to strive to gain a more fundamental understand ing of the atomic, and ultimately the electronic, processes that occur when a molecule is brought into the proximity of a metal surface. The present volume focuses mainly on the theory and concepts involved; however, it is intended for readers in chemistry, physics, and materials science who are not specialists in theory but nevertheless wish to learn more about this truly interdisciplinary area of theoretical science. The aim of the book is to present the way in which valence theory can be synthesized with the understanding of metals that has been gained over the last half century or so. While advanced theory has at times been necessary, is largely presented in an extensive set of Appendixes.
