The configuration of the model parameters, the rationale and solutions are described and discussed in detail so the reader has a strong understanding of the methodology. Modeling starts from data captured by 3D digitizers and makes the process even more clear and engaging. Innovative approaches, based on two popular machine learning paradigms, namely Radial Basis Functions and the Support Vector Machines, are also introduced. These paradigms are innovatively extended to a multi-scale incremental structure, based on a hierarchical scheme. The resulting approaches allow readers to achieve high accuracy with limited computational complexity, and makes the approaches appropriate for online, real-time operation. These image motions contain information about the motion of the camera and about the shapes of the objects in the field of view. There are two main types of image motion, finite displacements and image velocities. Finite displacements are described by the point correspondences between two images of the same scene taken from different positions. Image velocities are the velocities of the points in the image as they move over the projection surface. Reconstruction is the task of obtaining from the image-motions information about the camera motion or about the shapes of objects in the field of view. In this book the theory underlying reconstruction is described. Reconstruction from image motion is the subject matter of two different sci entific disciplines, photogrammetry and computer vision. In photogrammetry the accuracy of reconstruction is emphasised; in computer vision the emphasis is on methods for obtaining information from images in real time in order to guide a mechanical device such as a robot arm or an automatic vehicle. This book arises from recent work carried out in computer vision. Computer vision is a young field but it is developing rapidly. The earliest papers on reconstruction in the computer vision literature date back only to the mid 1970s. As computer vision develops, the mathematical techniques applied to the analysis of recon struction become more appropriate and more powerful.

Book excerpt: The 3D reconstruction of deformable surfaces is a classical problem in the field of computer vision, which has many important applications in virtual reality, surgical navigation, and training. For example, accurate 3D reconstruction for intracavitary soft-tissue scenes based on a stereo-endoscope can effectively promote surgeons and surgical robots' perception in a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), and thus improve the precision and safety of surgical operations. However, the dynamic deformable soft-tissues bring great challenges for accurate reconstruction. This book provides an in-depth discussion about the binocular reconstruction techniques for dynamic deformable surfaces such as beating heart surfaces. The camera models and calibration methods used for stereo vision are introduced first. The classical stereo matching methods are then presented. The deformable-model-based reconstruction methods are discussed emphatically, from the common-used deformable models, such as the triangular affine transformation, the B-spline model, and the Thin Plate Spline (TPS), to some improved models proposed recently, such as the Quasi-Spherical Triangle (QST) model, the overlapping TPS model, and the Triangular Radial Cubic Spline (TRCS) model. Book excerpt: The multiple view geometry in computer vision includes 3-D image and 3-D video processing techniques have received increasing interest due to the availability of high-end capturing, processing and rendering devices. Computer vision can define as a set of computational techniques aimed at estimating or making explicit the geometric and dynamic properties of the 3-D world from digital images. The 3-D world is projected onto 2-D acquisition surfaces. During this process, depth information can be lost. Furthermore, the classical 3-D measurement procedures based on photogrammetric causes systematic errors at strong curved surfaces or steps in surfaces (depth discontinuities problem). The challenges arise also from the foreshortening in one view of the stereo images, that occurs when the measured object have depth variation with the direction of the baseline. we demonstrate a theory of modeling the physical effects of perspective distortion in stereo vision systems. The proposed model is based on local spatial frequency representation and phase-difference-based technique as a widespread method for depth and optical flow estimation due to its superior performance.
