Book Method for Chemical Surface Modification of Fumed Silica Particles

Download or read book Method for Chemical Surface Modification of Fumed Silica Particles written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dehydroxylated, silica-containing, glass surfaces are known to be at least partially terminated by strained siloxane rings. According to the invention, a surface of this kind is exposed to a selected silane compound or mixture of silane compounds under reaction-promoting conditions. The ensuing reaction results in opening of the strained siloxane rings, and termination of surface atoms by chemical species, such as organic or organosilicon species, having desirable properties. These species can be chosen to provide qualities such as hydrophobicity, or improved coupling to a polymeric coating.

Book Biological Responses to Nanoscale Particles

Download or read book Biological Responses to Nanoscale Particles written by Peter Gehr and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the recent progress accumulated in studies of the interaction of engineered nanoparticles with cells and cellular constituents is presented. The focus is on manufacturing and characterization of nanosized materials, their interactions with biological molecules such as proteins, the mechanisms of transport across biological membranes as well as their effects on biological functions. Fundamental molecular and cellular aspects are in the foreground of the book. A further particularity is the interdisciplinary approach, including fields such as preparatory and analytical chemistry, biophysics and the physics of colloids, advanced microscopy and spectroscopy for in-situ detection of nanoparticles, cellular toxicology and nanomedicine. Nanoscale particles are known to exhibit novel and unprecedented properties that make them different from their corresponding bulk materials. As our ability to control these properties is further advanced, a huge potential to create materials with novel properties and applications emerges. Although the technological and economic benefits of nanomaterials are indisputable, concerns have also been raised that nanoscale structuring of materials might also induce negative health effects. Unfortunately, such negative health effects cannot be deduced from the known toxicity of the corresponding macroscopic material. As a result, there is a major gap in the knowledge necessary for assessing their risk to human health.

Book Characterization of Silicon Dioxide Surfaces by Successive Determinations of the Solution Rate

Download or read book Characterization of Silicon Dioxide Surfaces by Successive Determinations of the Solution Rate written by H. Baumann and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successive determination of the solution rate in sodium hydroxide or in buffer solutions may serve to establish the extent of surface defects and the thickness of the more or less amorphous layer of silicon dioxide (SiO2) dusts. The solution rate is a sensitive measurement for the energetic and thus crystallographic surface structure. Quartz surface modification due to thermal treatment is shown by examples. Furthermore, it is possible to produce quartz with a "pure" surface. The results of cell and animal experiments performed with crystallographic pure quartz specimens and with the same specimens coated with thin layers of amorphous silica are discussed.

Book Surface Modification in Control SiO2 Fiber Fracture

Download or read book Surface Modification in Control SiO2 Fiber Fracture written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is known that corrosion resistance can be imparted to various materials by carefully controlling the chemical environment to which newly formed and atomically clean surfaces are initially exposed. We take the view that the embrittlement of silica (SiO2) is also a corrosion process, originating from the activated hydrolysis of siloxane (Si-O-Si) bonds by molecular water. Our approach considers that surface states of SiO2 can be altered by the presence of absorbed or chemisorbed gases so as to increase the activation energy required for the absorption of water vapor or alternatively to impede the dissociation of molecular water on silica surfaces. Either of these mechanisms should raise the activation energy involved in hydrolyzing siloxane bonds and thus lower the susceptibility for crack propagation. Gases containing straight or branched chain hydrocarbons are expected to reduce the absorption potential for H2O for the silics surface. Absorbed gases containing strong polar residues such as halogens are expected to establish a surface dipole layer which may repel the absorbing end of H2O and prevent its dissociation on the silica surface.

Book Covalent Surface Modification of Silicon Oxides

Download or read book Covalent Surface Modification of Silicon Oxides written by Austin Woohyuk Lee and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave radiation was utilized as a tool to modify surface properties of silicon oxides. Covalent surface modification of silicon oxides has been widely pursued in the areas of material science, electronics, microfluidics, biology, and separation science. Chemical surface modifications are often achieved through the formation of organic monolayers, often referred to as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). While these organic monolayers have been proposed as an effective surface modification strategy, the defects in these organic monolayers compromise the effectiveness on their ability to alter surface properties. For example, in the case of passivation of microscale electronic devices, the surfaces that are not covered by the organic monolayers are susceptible to environmental stress or corrosion, which can cause detrimental failures of the devices. Traditional methods of formation of monolayers often cause many defects including formation of multilayers or micelles, physically adsorbed organic film, and/or voids. In this thesis, microwave radiation is utilized as a tool to accelerate the formation of uniform monolayers. In particular, the formation of silane based monolayers and alcohol based monolayers on silicon oxide surfaces have been extensively studied. Microwave heating, unlike the traditional heating methods, delivers the thermal energy to the substrate surfaces. It can effectively accelerate the formation of both silane and alcohol based monolayers. Alcohol based reagents, in particular, is proposed as an alternative building blocks for their widespread availability and minimal reactivity with moisture. Tuning of surface chemistry of silicon oxides have been achieved with alcohol based regents with different functional groups. Furthermore, the formation of mixed monolayers has been proposed as means of controlling oleophobicity of the silicon oxide surfaces. Finally, the film thickness of the alcohol based monolayers has been characterized with angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). The film thickness can be precisely tuned by choosing the alcohol based reactants with particular lengths of alkyl chains. A variety of surface chemistry can be designed towards many practical applications requiring surface functionalized silicon oxides using the research presented herein.

There are handbooks which briefly mention the nanosized particles or their related applications, but no handbook describing the complete aspects of nanoparticles has been published so far. The handbook elucidates of the basic properties of nanoparticles and various nanostructural materials with their characterisation methods in the first part. It also introduces more than 40 examples of practical and potential uses of nanoparticles in the later part dealing with applications. It is intended to give readers a clear picture of nanoparticles as well as new ideas or hints on their applications to create new materials or to improve the performance of the advanced functional materials developed with the nanoparticles. * Introduces all aspects of nanoparticle technology, from the fundamentals to applications. * Includes basic information on the preparation through to the characterization of nanoparticles from various viewpoints * Includes information on nanostructures, which play an important role in practical applications.
