Book Surface Integrity on Grinding of Gamma Titanium Aluminide Intermetallic Compounds

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-TiAl is an ordered intermetallic compound characterized by high strength to density ratio, good oxidation resistance, and good creep properties at elevated temperatures. However, it is intrinsically brittle at room temperature. This thesis investigates the potential for the use of grinding to process TiAl into useful shapes. Grinding is far from completely understood, and many aspects of the individual mechanical interactions of the abrasive grit with the material and their effect on surface integrity are unknown. The development of new synthetic diamond superabrasives in which shape and size can be controlled raises the question of the influence of those variables on the surface integrity. The goal of this work is to better understand the fundamentals of the abrasive grit/material interaction in grinding operations. Experimental, analytical, and numerical work was done to characterize and predict the resultant deformation and surface integrity on ground lamellar gamma-TiAl. Grinding tests were carried out, by analyzing the effects of grit size and shape, workpiece speed, wheel depth of cut, and wear on the subsurface plastic deformation depth (PDD). A practical method to assess the PDD is introduced based on the measurement of the lateral material flow by 3D non-contact surface profilometry. This method combines the quantitative capabilities of the microhardness measurement with the sensitivity of Nomarski microscopy. The scope and limitations of this technique are analyzed. Mechanical properties were obtained by quasi-static and split Hopkinson bar compression tests. Residual stress plots were obtained by x-ray, and surface roughness and cracking were evaluated. The abrasive grit/material interaction was accounted by modeling the force per abrasive grit for different grinding conditions, and studying its correlation to the PDD. Numerical models of this interaction were used to analyze boundary conditions, and abrasive size effects on the PDD. An explicit 2D triple planar slip crystal plasticity model of single point scratching was used to analyze the effects of lamellae orientation, material anisotropy, and grain boundaries on the deformation.

This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deductive kinematic model of creep-feed and speed-stroke grinding processes is developed to identify possibilities to reduce the energy introduced into the workpiece. By computer tomography analysis and tactile measurements of the grinding wheel the pore volume and the static cutting edge number are determined and included in the model. Based on the kinematic model and the grinding wheel characteristics an analytical evaluation of the specific grinding energy for speed-stroke and creep-feed grinding is carried out. The deducted process design is evaluated in experimental investigations. The generated model is evaluated by determining specific process values for the grinding forces and the grinding energy.

Book Polarity Dependent Removal Interferences in Sink EDM of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Polarity Dependent Removal Interferences in Sink EDM of Titanium Alloys written by Maximilian Holsten and published by Apprimus Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the design of turbomachinery components, a significant effort is carried out regarding the optimization of efficiency. The increase in thermal efficiency particularly involves the introduction of high-performance alloys. Such alloys are for example titanium alloys. Sink electrical discharge machining (sink EDM) is a crucial manufacturing process for components due to its independence of machined material strengths; however, new materials require process design. Hence, research to understand and optimize the machining of titanium alloys is of great benefit to the industry in general. A positive tool polarity is generally adopted in sink EDM to maximize material removal relative to tool wear. Sink EDM of α/β titanium alloys as Ti6Al4V is however atypical in that these materials necessitate a negative tool polarity. Adding to the intrigue are gamma titanium aluminides (γ-TiAl), which machine better under the conventional positive polarity. Established explanatory models of sink EDM fail in resolving the removal behavior – a need for fundamental research is given. This thesis focuses on clarifying the phenomena behind this interesting behavior by investigating removal mechanisms over a range of relevant process conditions. The polarity-effect is demonstrated to arise from the polarity-dependent nature and extent of titanium carbide (TiC) formation on the workpiece surface, which significantly affects material removal mechanisms. An explanatory model, deduced from different experimental and numerical approaches, clarifies the influence of polarity to the formation mechanism of a TiC layer. With regard to monitoring of adverse layer formations, the measurement of acoustic emission (AE) is proven an appropriate concept. A correlation of the AE signal to process forces is even established, which may be crucial to determine the deflection of thin electrodes in EDM. Finally, the knowledge acquired is applied and enhanced in comprehensive process design, that also involves the machining of additively manufactured γ-TiAl. The study reveals the beneficial behavior of the fine microstructure relative to the resulting surface integrity. As a result, this thesis delivers a model-based concept for process design with respect to the adequate choice of tool polarity during machining of titanium alloys.

Book Investigation on Surface Integrity of Titanium Alloy in Milling Operation

Download or read book Investigation on Surface Integrity of Titanium Alloy in Milling Operation written by Nurul Hidayah Abd. Rahim and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface integrity generally can be described by its topological, mechanical, and metallurgical. Since the defects produced from different machining can affect the performance of component, experiments always will be conducted to understand the effect of changing operating parameters before new machining strategies are accepted. In this study, surface integrity was characterized by surface roughness and microhardness of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The objectives of the project are investigating milling parameters effect on surface roughness of titanium alloy and the effect of cutting speed to surface hardness of titanium alloy. Three cutting parameters selected to study their effects on surface integrity which are cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. For surface roughness, five levels of each parameter chosen to see their effects when only one factor will be manipulated while the other are kept constant. The sensitivity of surface roughness value to process parameters shows that the feed has the most influence, followed by radial of depth of cut, while cutting speed has the least influence. For microhardness testing, the only factor manipulated is the cutting speed which three levels selected to observe the microhardness values. The result for microhardness is the higher cutting speed, the lower the surface hardness.
