Book Review of Standards for Surface and Dermal Sampling

Download or read book Review of Standards for Surface and Dermal Sampling written by Kenneth T. White and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article summarizes the body of available standards for sampling of chemical and biological agents on workplace surfaces, including skin. These standards consist of voluntary consensus standards such as those promulgated by ASTM International, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), as well as methods produced by U.S. Federal agencies such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Gaps in availabilities of standards are discussed along with activities underway to address needs in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene. In many cases, the available standards have been developed largely in response to regulatory requirements. For example, ASTM International standards, which describe requirements for wiping surfaces and methodologies for determining metals and metalloids such as lead and beryllium, were produced primarily in response to regulatory requirements for sampling settled dust for these elements in the United States. Methods for collection of asbestos samples, vacuum sampling, dry wipe sampling, and bulk sampling have also been promulgated. Standardized methods for non-metal contaminants and biological agents are more limited in availability. In particular, there is a lack of standardized methodologies for dermal sampling and limited standard guidance on selection of appropriate surface sampling methods and data evaluation. Activities are currently ongoing within ASTM International and ISO to address some of the gaps, but additional activity is needed to address remaining requirements for consensus standards.

Book Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation

Download or read book Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation written by Josep M. Bayona and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 2998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation is a complete treatment of the theory and methodology of sampling in all physical phases and the theory of sample preparation for all major extraction techniques. It is the perfect starting point for researchers and students to design and implement their experiments and support those experiments with quality-reviewed background information. In its four volumes, fundamentals of sampling and sample preparation are reinforced through broad and detailed sections dealing with Biological and Medical, Environmental and Forensic, and Food and Beverage applications. The contributions are organized to reflect the way in which analytical chemists approach a problem. It is intended for a broad audience of analytical chemists, both educators and practitioners of the art and can assist in the preparation of courses as well in the selection of sampling and sample preparation techniques to address the challenges at hand. Above all, it is designed to be helpful in learning more about these topics, as well as to encourage an interest in sampling and sample preparation by outlining the present practice of the technology and by indicating research opportunities. Sampling and Sample preparation is a large and well-defined field in Analytical Chemistry, relevant for many application areas such as medicine, environmental science, biochemistry, pharmacology, geology, and food science. This work covers all these aspects and will be extremely useful to researchers and students, who can use it as a starting point to design and implement their experiments and for quality-reviewed background information There are limited resources that Educators can use to effectively teach the fundamental aspects of modern sample preparation technology. Comprehensive Sampling and Sample Preparation addresses this need, but focuses on the common principles of new developments in extraction technologies rather than the differences between techniques thus facilitating a more thorough understanding Provides a complete overview of the field. Not only will help to save time, it will also help to make correct assessments and avoid costly mistakes in sampling in the process Sample and sample preparation are integral parts of the analytical process but are often less considered and sometimes even completely disregarded in the available literature. To fill this gap, leading scientists have contributed 130 chapters, organized in 4 volumes, covering all modern aspects of sampling and liquid, solid phase and membrane extractions, as well as the challenges associated with different types of matrices in relevant application areas

Book excerpt: The skin is the first line of defense against chemical warfare agents including nerve agents and toxic industrial chemicals, providing a possible barrier or delay to systemic distribution. However, some chemicals act directly on the skin including vesicants sulfur mustard and corrosive compounds such as strong acids or bases, and do not have to gain access to systemic circulation to cause extensive skin damage. Early and rapid skin decontamination is extremely important following exposure to chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals because it decreases serious skin damage to the patient and, potentially, their doctor. This multi-authored international text pulls together a century of decontamination research and helps the reader expedite solutions that will decrease morbidity and mortality. Complete with dozens of hiqh quality photographs and illustrations, Skin Decontamination aids industrial hygiene, dermatology, occupational physicians and those involved in the public health arena.

Book Dermal Drug Selection and Development

Download or read book Dermal Drug Selection and Development written by Lionel Trottet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors show how the pharmaceutical industry faces the development of dermal drugs and provide the only book of its kind that describes how the industry develops and selects dermal drugs, complete with the challenges and opportunities of the field. Delivery of drugs through the skin has been an attractive and challenging area for research, and advances in modern technologies have resulted in a larger number of drugs being delivered transdermally, including conventional hydrophobic small molecule drugs, hydrophilic drugs and macromolecules. Offering the perspective from the industrial side of selection and development of drugs, the primary audience is geared towards the pharmaceutical industry but can also offer valuable information to clinicians, compounding pharmacists, and similarly pharmacy students. Dermal Drug Selection and Development covers the scientific gaps that exist in terms of dermal pharmacokinetics and the resulting uncertainty by clinicians when choosing a drug candidate.
